I am trained and certified in the use of Scott Air-Pak SCBAs and North 7700 half-face respirators.

It's really quite simple. You put the mask on, tighten the straps, and check the seal by placing your hand over the intake and inhaling. If the seal sucks to your face, you're probably good. If it doesn't suck to your face and you can feel air coming in, either it's the wrong size or the straps are not adjusted correctly. Also, you have to be clean-shaven and you can't let any head hair get between the seal and your skin. That's pretty much all you need to know to use a respirator properly.

If the threat is a virus, the whole mask must be considered as contaminated. It must be sprayed with peroxide or a similar disinfectant, especially around the inlets on the filters, and then you have to wait the length of the agent's contact time before you can safely remove it.

Fitting disposable P95s is harder than ones that take cartridges, because the whole mask is the filter. There is no intake you can conveniently block off to check the seal. You just have to make sure the whole thing is in contact with the face and covers the nose properly and isn't pinching or bunching up anywhere.

Again, we use North 7700s with P100 cartridges to paint, sandblast, and needle-gun with.

This is correct. The actual number of infections is thought to be on the order of 10 to 20 times the number of cases. So, if they're saying there are 1.38 million cases, there are actually 13.8 to 27.6 million infections globally.

The infection fatality rate is variously quoted as being 1 to 3 percent.

It's worth noting that the Spanish Flu, which also had a mortality rate of "around 1 to 3 percent", variously quoted as 2.5%, killed tens of millions of people worldwide.

The world population and population density is much higher than in 1918, with ever-increasing levels of urbanization. Also, our transportation is a lot faster and more interconnected, with jet aircraft and automobiles flitting around everywhere.
