First of all, I never said it’s a mega-plague or that it will kill 99.9% of all people. As a matter of fact, the worst-case scenarios I've seen are something like 1.4% mortality in 60 to 80% of the world's population, or about 60 to 90 million people dead.

That's still potentially more than all the deaths in WWII, and plenty enough to wreck the economy, create a decade-long recession, and trigger various wars.
