Based on my experiences with depression, doesn't it make you want to hide how awful you're feeling? To bottle it up because breaking down and showing everyone how you've felt would make people worry about you, and you don't feel like you're worth worrying about? When I was struggling with depression, the last thing I wanted was for someone to notice. But maybe that was just me.
