Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I'm not buying it. More likely the qRT-PCR test is just being shitty, either throwing out false positives or false negatives.

At this point in time, I agree. This is a brand-new virus, after all. The likelihood of the tests being flawed right now is pretty dang high, especially when it comes to the earlier versions of the tests (which have been heavily used in South Korea).

About viruses being dormant. HIV is a retrovirus. That means that to copy itself it turns its RNA into DNAAa then inserts it’s own genome into that of the host cell. The virus’s genetic material is now part of the host genetic material. Our genomes (And almost everything else’s) are actually littered with dead, decaying and unknown function sequences derived from retroviruses.
Coronavirus is not a retrovirus. It replicates by hijacking the internal machinery of the cell to produce more copies of itself. There are quite a few viruses that have either very long infection times or that are never quite cleared and can come back later, especially if the host’s immune system is weakened. Here’s quite a nice little blog post about it:

So could corona be establishing long term or latent infections? We dont know. Some research shows that some viruses can establish long term infections. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) usually infects babies for example and is suspected of lying low and causing respiratory problems later in life. Some viruses that infect mucous membranes don’t create very strong immune responses.

So we don’t know. Our immune systems are ridiculously complex and we don’t really know much about them. It’s possible that corona is establishing latent infection but there’s really no evidence so far. I suspect it will be like other Coronaviruses - the sicker you were the stronger the immune response, and we will have a response that is variable, lasting months to years.

Hey Idiot, most Cures Talked about right now are Anti-parasitic medication.
Plasmodium Vivax and the rest of the Malaria Gang are also Parasites-

^That.

So. You people may have come to know our old buddy Stoneheart over here for his most grievous sin. Namely being german. But banter and shitposts aside he knows his shit. Malaria is a Plasmodium parasite.

Important point is. This whole "antivirals can't be antibacterials or antiparasite" bullshit many are peddling is in fact BULLSHIT. Anything that can break the capside of a virus, innutilize its way of entering the cell, or destroy its DNA in a selective way is an antiviral. Anything that can break the bacteria/parasite's membrane, inutilize its way to infect the body, or destroy its DNA in a selective way is an antibac/antipar. Most often since these molecules are SELECTIVE they tend to only affect a small group of things with enough efficiency, but similar structures can often appear for a single function, much like dolphins look like fish despite being mammals, sometimes it just works that way. And then there's no issue with an antibac/antipar also being an antiviral. Antibodies are just molecules that selectively target a body, nothing more, there's no set in stone evolutive barrier to stop this from happening. It's just odd. Not impossible.

Hey motherfucker, would you care to show me where remdesivir, hydroxycloroquine, tocilizumab or azithromycin are described as "anti-parasitic"?

The problem with that comment is, that Germany and the Netherlands (I guess amongst others) are blocking Eurobonds, even in the limited version of so-called Corona-Bonds.

Watch the news item, they are only blocking Corona-bonds because they want poor countries to borrow with strings attached from the central bank, like during the economic crisis, which is even worse. It basically puts the PIGS countries back to square one.

Just in time for the National Clap too.

This is really interesting.

Is anyone else starting to expect that one of the drugs that are FDA approved for another use will turn out to be very helpful in treating coronavirus?

The chances of any one drug being very helpful is not good but people are testing dozens of them all over the world and that makes me think we're going to get something. How effective that something is is of course unknown. However if you're looking at tens of thousands of deaths with no treatment even a relatively marginal one could save thousands of lives. If the worst case in hundreds of thousands of deaths a marginal treatment could save tens of thousands of lives.

And you could see improvements in ventilator and ICU protocols upping the survival rate to that you get with regular viral pneumonia. IIRC that's ~70% instead of 50%. Which is not to be sneezed coofed at - you could halve the death rate in ICU where most people die.

I expect something really creepy and out of left field to happen on Easter this year. It wouldn't be Jebus coming back.

We're all gonna get raptured except the trannies. Shit will so cash!

Ivermectin? Weird. Used to deworm sheep with that shit.

In Wales, it's used as a sheep aphrodisiac.

I love that film.

Coronavirus: 881 more people die with COVID-19 in UK, taking total to 7,978

The number of people confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK now stands at 65,077.

Fuck knows where those figures are coming from. I reported 282,074 yesterday were tested.

Nothing on the Health and Social Care twitter, or that of the COVID-19 UK Dashboard.

Mind, it sounds like the usual "Sky news breaking news" where they're constantly duped on rumours and hearsay, rush the headline, then quietly climb down.

Can't for the life of me understand why folks don't trust the media any more...

We just dont want to pay for missmanagement of others.

2020 is going to need its own chapter in the history books. What else are we in store for? Great comets? Yellowstone going off? Tasmanian tiger found?

Good. Something positive at last. Bet the guardian is wishing him well while grinding their teeth in fury.

UK Daily:

Accurate figures as opposed to whatever bullshit Sky's peddling.

298,169 Tested (+16,096)

65,077 Positive (+4,344)

7,987 Dead (+881)

So basically Sky News is shit and can't fucking count properly.

UK's current rate of doubling of cases has gone from 3 days to 6.
