Wuhan Coronavirus: Lockdowns, Quarantines, Cancellations

Haven't been posting lately, but for those interested, Malaysia has extended its lockdown for yet another two weeks.

One can only imagine how much longer people are willing to put up with this.

All in the name of the greater good. Now return to your pod for you buglent rations.

Recently, people have been complaining about people going to their local stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot and buying lawn mowers and other ordinary items that don't seem essential on the surface. I imagine the expanded restrictions are in response to this even though I think such restrictions are presently overkill.

However, tonight's evening news featured a mayor who stated on-camera he has no plans to target landscape services mowing customers' lawns in his city. He believes that an e-mail reply from the governor can be interpreted to say that keeping grass cut is an essential service because of city ordinances requiring grass to be kept below a certain height to reduce blight, prevent vermin, etc.
Yea, fear mongers screeching to close down the garden section. They either don't know or turn a blind eye to the benefits of working/being out in the yard/garden. Especially now with every thing that going on due to the virus and the "shelter at home" orders, gardening serves the body via exercise and the mind by relieving anxiety/stress. In my neck of the woods the garden section is still open, but there are already people spewing that it's not "essential".

there is something good about Corona. travelling in germany pretty much ended with it, but i needed to go somewhere and had the right papers for it. It was the most fun i ever had. the Autobahn is realy empty so i needed 76 minutes for 210km.
Nice, 100 or so mph ain't too shabby. Still have to many cops around our highways to get away with that consistently.

That, and the old Edge doesn't like sitting at 100 :(

Furthermore, if someone has the money to buy something even if it is unnecessary, fucking let them buy it. The economy needs every cent it can get right now.
Yep, my wife and I are in the pickle of needing boxes to move out of our current apartment but not being able to buy them from Wally World because "lol not essential". They have quite literally cordoned off anything in the local WalMart that isn't food, cleaning supplies, or pet supplies. Tough shit if you need cookware, electronics, or clothing - those aren't essential.

There are other stores that flagrantly ignore that dictate from the Governor's office but I doubt they have what I need right now. We'll make due somehow, but this is really trying my patience.

110 mph or so and well its totaly legal in germany.
Car and street would have been fine with more, but driving above 120 mph is pretty tiresome and i had to be in top shape at the place i had to go.

OAKLAND, California (KRON) – In an effort to further promote social distancing and to simply have enough room to do so, the city of Oakland will be closing about 74 miles of city streets in order to give bicyclists and pedestrians more room to spread out.

Mayor Libby Schaaf announced the new initiative on Thursday, calling it “Oakland Slow Streets.”

The idea is to close roads to vehicular traffic mostly in and around residential neighborhoods.

More details are expected to be released later today.

-------

By closing residential streets, are they going to be basically barricading people in their neighborhoods? Sorry, can't drive to the store, your street's closed?

And remember Oakland isnt all ghetto. It runs from super-ghetto up to million-dollar-plus house neighborhoods. Will be interesting to see where this is implemented.

I actually think this is good. People in Chicago and LA have been asking for this because the sidewalks are too narrow and everyone is out walking and biking at once. I'm not sure they're going to handle cars though. Someone has suggested that that they close the outer two lanes of bigger 4-lane streets since there's less traffic.

If you have a Lowe's and/or Home Depot near you, they have boxes. I've bought boxes at Lowe's.

It's frightening how a lot of people (Especially on Reddit) interpret quarantine as never going outside, at all. Have fun dying of vitamin D deprivation and all that anxiety being fed to you by the media.

Also not to sound like a total nutter, but it's also scary to see journalists shitting out piece after piece telling people to not focus on self improvement during this downtime and Twitter weirdos I've learned about via /pol/ lecturing people on how they shouldn't bake and "waste flour". Combined with local government's banning seed sales it's as if they just want us to be 100% helpless and defenseless to the point of being incapable of wiping our own asses.

Some neighboorhoods had a spike in crime like Queens during Corona-chan lockdown but in Chicago one guy shot and killed a home invader. I guess some prisonners will think twice before home invading unless they go to a gun free zone?

That Youtuber posted this comment of the day worth to share.

I support most of the rigid restrictions being introduced in many places backed up by willingly limiting interpersonal contact. They work, especially when reasonably thought out and not introduced in a wild panic weeks too late. Some stuff you or @heathercho describe though sounds like going off the deep end. You have a few factors at play here. There's a certain type of scientist (epidemiologist in this case; not all of course, but often the most influential and outspoken) who absolutely demands things be run his way because his specialist knowledge and intellect require so. There's politicians who in this case will obviously jump at their ideas. And there's the crowd mentioned in your post who turn the idea of responsible self-quarantine into a mockery: what they do is actually remove all responsibility from themselves and place it on the governing body and informal authorities. All that's left is posturing.

That's actually really infuriating. Everything remotely practical is essential when someone ends up needing it. Also, if a store is going to be open, just let it be fucking open.

Look up U-Haul rental locations in your area that are not the corporate stores. The gas stations that rent the trucks will also sell supplies like boxes. It's an option that might be closer to you if you don't have a HD/Lowe's nearby. The actual U-Haul stores could also be open right now depending on your locale. You're going to pay a premium for the boxes, but they do have them.

It'd be interesting to know if Oakland is one of the many cities that has studied the use of "road diets" where streets judged to have excess capacity for vehicles get reconfigured with fewer vehicle lanes while adding dedicated bike lanes. I could see Oakland using this temporary shutdown as a way to take some of four-lane streets having less traffic and reconfigure them to having one lane in each direction with a center turn lane and bike lanes on each edge once these streets are reopened to vehicular traffic.

As I think I mentioned in the mega-thread, there's also those that have unexpected downtime from work who now want to use the spare time to be productive and do all the little around-the-house projects (landscaping, repairs, etc.) they lacked the time to otherwise do. It makes no sense to tell people that they can still do work around the house, but that they can't buy the supplies, materials, or equipment they need for it.

Current Michigan Happenings

Stay home has been extended through April 30. Starting today (April 10):
  • Visiting neighbors or family is prohibited (with exceptions to check on the elderly, infirm, or pets).
  • Travel between two residences within the state is prohibited. For example, someone can't travel from their main home to a cottage.
  • Large stores can only have 4 customers per 1000 square feet (93 m^2). Smaller stores are limited to 25% capacity based on the fire codes.
  • Stores must have markings to help keep people 6 feet (2 m) apart in lines.
  • Large stores must close off access to areas dedicated to carpeting, flooring, furniture, gardening centers, plant nurseries, or paint.

In clarifying the latest orders:
  • Mowing one's own lawn is OK provided social distancing is practiced. Professional lawn care is only acceptable if it's necessary for safety & functioning of the home.
  • Some cities have opted not to ticket those unable to have their lawns mowed during the duration of the stay home orders.

Meanwhile, people are already pointing out -- or frustrated with -- loopholes and inconsistencies what what's allowed versus what isn't and what's still considered essential or non-essential. Key examples cited include:
  • State residents can't travel to a cottage elsewhere in the state, but people from out of state with a cottage in Michigan can still travel to theirs.
  • Lottery tickets may still be sold whether online or in stores (presumably because they help finance schools) while a can of paint or bag of seeds can't be sold.

Beshear: Kentuckians who attend mass gatherings this weekend will be ordered to quarantine
https://www.wcpo.com/news/coronavirus/gov-andy-beshear-closes-out-week-with-covid-19-update-friday (https://archive.vn/uqczY)

Beshear said Kentucky State Police officers will record the license plate numbers of any cars seen at these mass gatherings, and local health officials will contact people associated with those vehicles and require them to self-quarantine for 14 days.

I also posted this in the regular megathread, but figured it would fit here.

A lot of these arbitrary lockdown and business rules are about power. They have the power to tell you that you can't work on your lawn, paint you house, drive, or walk a certain way so they will. Some places are going to not stop until it is 24/7 home curfew, with town officials and their cronies controlling food distribution. All in the name of safety, with busybody Karens begging them for more.

Everyone thought the fed'ral gubmit was gonna send in the tanks and declare martial law and take our guns 'n freedom, instead it'll be Boss Hogg and Roscoe.

It's pretty eye-opening how people on both sides of the political spectrum just sit back and accept this. But I think tension is going to build, especially when people realize the contradictions inherent in "the police will pull your ass over, demand to see your papers, and if you don't have them, you get a big ass fine/misdemeanor charge" and "the police won't respond to burglaries". If the government has basically sentenced the entire population to house arrest (including convicted criminals who get let out of jail) and ensured you don't have any income aside from a limited amount of Trumpbux, what incentive is there not to take shit other than the goodness of your heart?

This is very nationwide too. For instance, here's what's going on in Louisville, KY.

(archive)

The police won't respond and victims are told file a police report online. Wonder how low the arrest rate and prosection rate for these crimes will be?

I'm a supporter of more federalism and state's rights since a one-size fits all policy is dumb (because New York and Wyoming have different needs), but it's clear this applies to states too since some place in the middle of nowhere in the UP has a different need than Detroit, yet all I'm seeing are the same policies being applied to both places. And the media writing pieces bitching about red state governors hurting the poor people in big Democrat cities by not treating rural counties in the middle of nowhere the same as those cities.

This shit is bringing out the worst in everyone, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if there's a lot of cops, small-town officials, and no doubt powerful politicians utterly relishing the chance to go on the mother of all power trips.
