Everyone says it's satire because Verhoeven explicitly says it's satire, specifically towards the sincerity of the book's politics, and he's got a decent track record for satire in the genre with Robocop. Whether it's successful at being recognized as such divorced of his explicit declaration is another matter. The fact that the film ends up as a standard space soldier movie is a reflection of the source material. This is not one of Heinlein's better works, but it is mercifully one of the ones where the main character doesn't enact an oedipal quest spanning centuries

See with Starship Troopers the satire would be found in if it's revealed that Humans ultimately kicked off the war and they were the invaders making all the news propaganda. But that was never in the movie so everything is justified. All we are left is with very standard action movie tropes and pretty normal character arcs. I mean "based kind of on a thing we see now" would mean Avatar is also satire and it isn't. Satire needs to criticize the thing it's about and in both these cases even the extremes are justified because its in a world where the antagonists are even more extreme.

Sure, you've got you're view on this. A point can be made without a person agreeing that it matches how the movie ends. Robocop ends with the corrupt executive willing to do human experiments brought down by his own experiment and a man who just has a face left trying to reclaim his humanity. I don't see much justification there

I don't think anyone was getting upset with the uggos at TRR critiquing women way above their league as being below them. It's just kind of pathetic, if you wanna try and make the point that kiwis critiquing TRR blobs pretending to be heartthrobs is ironic, then OK, I guess? I mean isn't this thread designed to talk about the behavior and going-ons of Ralph and his ilk? Furthermore, I did mention in my original post that started this topic that the delusional from-on-high judging of women thing is annoying but no big deal, the bigger problem being that it's becoming the core of the show and it's dull as fuck.

That said, it does feel like their stance towards women is becoming strangely creepy, but it doesn't really matter to me, I'm not expecting scum to not act like scum.
