You didn't specify that this was immediately after 9/11. In any case, certain individuals have said pants-on-head exceptional shit years after 9/11. My point is that they tried to cancel him for that too, so it wouldn't be the last attempt.
Not everyone follows Bill Maher's career so attentively that they can easily date every time he said something that pissed people off, especially since there's been a lot of those. Look back to your post, it says nothing about when this happened.
You both probably have an element of truth here. The owners/editors are the ones on the Chinese payroll and the writer "journalist" hacks gladly write these pieces because it's what they're bosses want and becuz raycizm, wypipo and predominantly white countries bad, with no extra payment beyond their standard paycheck.
It's such a snide little bitch dig to make, and it doesn't even make sense. Maher's point was that epidemics are often named after regions from which they are thought to have originated. Spain didn't have war time censorship at the time, meaning that it looked like it was ground zero for the disease. Going 'Lol it wasn't really from Spain in this particular example tho' doesn't discredit the convention, especially as we're still using that fucking name to this day.
To be fair, I think the leading theory now is that that one originated in East Africa and spread northwards due to a milder climate. It did first manifest itself in Egypt, rather than areas more plugged into the Silk Route.
