TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

Doug as NC reviewing yet another movie that isn't even 4 years old yet.
This one ain't even nostalgic unless you say "well, it's based on the toy brand."

He may have the yellow wall, but it don't feel like old NC if he's reviewing something from modern day.

Definitely seems weird to be reviewing a movie that's only 3 years old, even if it's based on an older property.

And of course he criticises the toilet humour, despite using that kind of humour in his reviews. (cough Spider-Man 2 train scene cough)
What kind of sperg criticizes a childrens film for having immature humor and jokes?

"Uh, pardon me, but I think 8 year olds may want more intellectually stimulating fare to watch while they gobble down popcorn and dunk fries in their milkshake."

I understand the criticism that "technically it's for everybody", "animation and films like this can be complex and deep and for adults as well", fine, but it's still primarily aimed at children. Hell there are movies like that "Sausage Party" (or Sausage Fest, I dont remember) that are animated movies that are nothing but juvenile humor and sex jokes and innuendos and shit like that, even though its not the plot. Adults can laugh at that shit too.

THIS! So much this! Adult animation is if anything much more lowbrow as well as simplistic than the stuff produced for children.

Never never take into consideration the words of animation "experts" like Doug, Animat, PhantomStrider or Cellspex who cry and moan about how animation can be "mature and for adults, too!" but then refuse to watch anything more complex than a Disney Princess movie or a Steven Universe ripoff cartoon. They spend all their time criticizing and shitting on crappy kid's films but then refuse to go and search for actual "adult" animated films that might satisfy their needs (none of them have seen stuff like Persepolis, Mary and Max, Ghost in the Shell or Akira for example).

In short, these people bitch endlessly, but never go out to search those mature animated films they so crave. They don't put their money where their mouth is.

Doug is one of those people that grew up watching things like Animaniacs and Batman TAS. Those kinds of shows went for a more general audience type of approach, putting things in both for kids and adults while mainly being marketed towards a younger crowd. So if a show decides to just focus on kids or just adults, he gets upset.

To be fair, Cellspex watches movies from obscure Japanese animation studios.

Honestly, I'd be willing to believe Doug has seen some good animation, but just chooses to endlessly review Disney crap because he has no respect for his audience and he knows it will get clicks. He's no patrician but if he actually cared he could probably find better stuff.

The thing that's always fascinated me about doug is how he's been putting out videos for a ridiculously long time now (like 15 years or something) but somehow has managed to not improve a single thing other than the production value of them. I haven't watched his videos seriously since like 2013 but I'll check out one of his new ones every now and then and I'm literally astounded by the fact that his style of video and sense of humor have not improved at all.

The funniest part is that, even though his ability to properly review and criticize a movie has remained abysmal, he's slowly transitioned to more serious reviews of movies that aren't just dumb kids films, so his videos have often somehow got worse with time.

I think they are. The Dark Knight is an awesome movie, and I love the first two acts of Batman Begins. The third act of Batman Begins is pretty weak, and The Dark Knight Rises is really entertaining, but dumb.

I love Spider-Man 1 and 2. They are my favorite comic book movies. And I would put Spider-Man 3 on the same level as The Dark Knight Rises.

All of that said, though ... There was certainly a director's vision for both trilogies, which is why I respect both trilogies. That's not something we see in big blockbusters anymore, it seems. We most certainly don't see any sort of director's vision with the Spider-Man movies that Doug is still salty about getting canned (because they sucked a big one).
Interesting fact: venom wasn't supposed to be in spiderman 3. Sam raimi was pressured by exects to have him in

It’s the ego and myopia of never having had to go through any editorial critique with his videos. He was his own boss, and he thinks he’s making gold, so there is no room for improvement in his mind. It’s like Tommy Wiseau. He paid his own way, and was certain he had it right, and the result was The Room.

It’s common among artists that came up on their own. The histories of independent film and comics Are chock full of trash that 90% of people look at and say “Wow, how the hell did they think THAT was good enough to put out?"

Spider-Man 3 was originally written as the start of a trilogy, with the black suit being introduced and Sandman as the villain. The 4th movie was to be the black suit corrupting Spider-Man as he deals with Harry becoming the Green Goblin, with Peter getting rid of the symbiote at the end, and the final movie was to be Spider-Man vs Venom. Sony not wanting to renegotiate with any of the cast to keep them past the third film resulted in Raimi being forced to cram all three storylines into one movie that failed to meet fan and box-office expectations completely.

The rush to use Venom was because Sony wasn’t sure if just having Spider-Man pick up the symbiotic suit was enough to keep their rights to Venom and the characters related to him. They had 10-year “use it or lose it” licensing that they secured in 1999, and the timeline would have seen the first actual appearance of Venom hitting theatres in 2010-2011 at the earliest.

And to think this was before the MCU was a thing.
