Forgive my powerleveling, I've been attempting a Level 1 playthrough of Dark Souls 3 lately, and it's got me thinking about something.
I'm fighting Dancer, and Champion Gundyr, and I'm dying...a lot. One of the benefits of not needing to level is that death has less of a penalty, so I'm able to attempt, attempt, attempt, learning a few more nuances as I play. And overall it just reminded me of Phil's "bash your head against a wall" style of playing. Meant for a more specialized style of play, it doesn't make for entertainment. Or at least there's a preconception that success isn't expected to be earned quickly.
My point is, imagine if Phil based his reputation as someone who wasn't the "average, Joe Schmoe gamer". Imagine if he beat every Dark Souls at level 1. He'd still die a lot, he'd still be bashing his head against the wall, but he'd carve a (less embarrassing) niche for himself. If he's going to struggle anyway, why not put some extra tagline behind it?
And furthermore, imagine if he simply didn't get so bent out of shape over losing. I get stressed out sometimes too, but for the most part I know it's okay to keep dying as I know I'm learning more with each attempt. When I finally killed Dancer I felt high as a kite for a few minutes, I bet Phil's fans would love to watch something similar with him.
I guess I'm just thinking about how close DSP got to being a less infamous streamer, how many chances he's been given that he's thrown away due to negligence.
