A bit random and off topic, but since he streams with his window open even in winter, does that mean his neighborhood has to listen to him call twelve year Olds and legally disabled people dumb fucks all day long? Do you think his neighbors hate him?

Not just in the winter, his schedule 'tism is because the HOA has enforced quiet hours and his neighbors repeatedly complained about the noise late at night. Between that, him being a complete shutin, and most of the community being older I imagine they think he's some kind of nutcase and liable to snap.

He lives in a place where he pays a monthly fee to be restricted in his chosen lifestyle?
Don't get me wrong, I understand noise violations and by laws and all that, but like, why is he choosing to live in a place where he can't do what he normally likes to do half of his waking hours, since he wakes up late and goes to bed in the early hours. He is perpetually the victim of his own short sighted choices. I feel bad. Even animals and children learn not to touch hot stoves after being burned.

Forgive my powerleveling, I've been attempting a Level 1 playthrough of Dark Souls 3 lately, and it's got me thinking about something.
I'm fighting Dancer, and Champion Gundyr, and I'm dying...a lot. One of the benefits of not needing to level is that death has less of a penalty, so I'm able to attempt, attempt, attempt, learning a few more nuances as I play. And overall it just reminded me of Phil's "bash your head against a wall" style of playing. Meant for a more specialized style of play, it doesn't make for entertainment. Or at least there's a preconception that success isn't expected to be earned quickly.
My point is, imagine if Phil based his reputation as someone who wasn't the "average, Joe Schmoe gamer". Imagine if he beat every Dark Souls at level 1. He'd still die a lot, he'd still be bashing his head against the wall, but he'd carve a (less embarrassing) niche for himself. If he's going to struggle anyway, why not put some extra tagline behind it?
And furthermore, imagine if he simply didn't get so bent out of shape over losing. I get stressed out sometimes too, but for the most part I know it's okay to keep dying as I know I'm learning more with each attempt. When I finally killed Dancer I felt high as a kite for a few minutes, I bet Phil's fans would love to watch something similar with him.
I guess I'm just thinking about how close DSP got to being a less infamous streamer, how many chances he's been given that he's thrown away due to negligence.
All that matters behind a Youtuber/Streamer is the personality behind their gameplay. The more stubborn Phil gets, the further he digs himself into a pit.

I agree. Maybe I'm being overly 🌈 but if he dedicated himself to a difficult challenge like a sl1 run or an I Wanna game and said "I'm absolutely going to see this through no matter how long or how tough it gets" even his detractors would give him some begrudging respect. I'm willing to bet the possible audience for a kaizo romhack is larger than a 38 year old man touring his wife's Animal Crossing file, too.

But being mildly bored is torture to Phil. I HAVE TO REDO TEN MINUTES OF GAMEPLAY WOOOW he cries as if he's being flayed when the reality is he's being given money to play GTA. YOU ALL JUST WANT ME TO SUFFER he says as people pay to vote on which videogame they'd like to watch him play.

I had a theory I was thinking of.

Remember how the previous owners of the Wakando were running "an illegal chop shop" in the garage and somehow got reported to the government for not filing taxes? One of the neighbors probably told on them.

Remember how Phil claimed the government found out he was running a business because he got signed up for business magazines? Yeah, right. I wonder if one of the neighbors got pissed off at his constant yelling and told Uncle Sam that he was running an internet business and not paying taxes.

He'd have to be willing to not read guides or take backseating from chat, neither of which he will do. It's why all his more recent Souls and Souls-like stuff has been so boring. He either reads a guide or is fed information, Sekiro being a particularly egregious example.

You are right in 99% of the cases. It's extremely obviouis he's either been fed a cheese build or checked guildes/vids on Nioh 2 though. It's not dumb luck that he managed to get the mose cheese build in the game just iike that. Either someone told him, or he checked a guide.

Kinggoken even mentioned like 5 times last nioh stream that he was like 2x as strong as his character against Nobunaga Oda, despite Phil just whinging it and choosing the "randoesz" switchblade+mage+sloth (aka cheese build)

His Animal Crossing "play"through is...unique. It's like a case study in how much someone can pretend to be interested by something. The amount he shouts and yells about absolutely nothing is astonishing.

Welp sounds like we’re in for a train wreck of a stream tomorrow.

Dave was what 15-16 when the orignal game released? Good to know his opinions apparently haven’t changed since he was a literal teenager. I can just imagine 15 year old Dave Bennett being toxic towards the cross dressing scene....and I can definitely see 40 year old Dave just as toxic over it in the remake

also what’s there to be “edgy” about tomorrow? Cringe or awkward could apply to the scene, but edgy? Sounds like he’s just going to be an asshole and blame it on the scene

you really gotta love the difference between dave and the rest of the world though. The cross dressing segment was something fans were hoping would remain intact all these years since the ramakes announcement. For better or worse it’s an iconic segment of the game, fans were genuinely worried the current political climate would cause the segment to be cut. Then you get this old asshole who’s just mean spirited and spiteful who hated the scene and game back then and hates it now, and is promising “edgy” humor to ensue.

My prediction is he’s going to take the high road and claim the scene is insulting to cross dressers or trans people or something else he doesn’t actually give a shit about so he has an excuse to shit on the scene like he did as a kid when he first played it. I hope he doesn’t do that, but I could see him do it just like he manipulates ever bring else in the world to justify his actions

Lol "edgy". Why am I not surprised a section that would call in to question the players comfort with their masculinity is the part that drove DSP away from FFVII.

Just come out of the closet already Phil, it's 2020, we'll get jailed if we judge you.

Yeah, it isn't really edgy at all. Even back then, it wasn't really making fun or light of trans people and/or crossdressing. At least to the best of my memory of 15+ years ago. Jules, the gym leader, was a crossdresser/trans/whatever, but everyone else in the gym still respected him, and he was the hardest opponent to beat. And Cloud putting on a dress and wig was just a disguise.

Anyway, there are some significant changes to how that whole sequence works now. Squenix basically made it a celebration of queer culture, with some sequences that are going to make PissbabyPaul very uncomfortable. Jules is still there, but he just kind of looks effeminate, and that's about it.

I know he said he didn't even get out of Midgar, but I'm wagering he never reached Wall Market. But if, IF he did get through the cross-dressing part; he doesn't remember anything, just that Cloud had to put on a dress. I doubt he did any of the side stuff to get Cloud to be selected, or get into the Honeybee Inn, etc. He probably got the dress, got the wig, and went to Corneo's place. He probably doesn't even remember the line about the gym having "guys like him;" to take a shot and say the gym has guys who enjoy dressing up or something more... and that's the most egregious example in a normal playthrough. If you take your time to go to the Honeybee Inn and choose the right room, Cloud shares a hot tub with a lot of burly men, with some sleight hints of swinging that way. And if you choose the other room, Cloud encounters a Sephiroth shade and has a head moment. Even Corneo was more tame, aside from the idea of a sleaze holding "auditions" to be his next "wife."

Phil never made it to that part of the game, and if he did, he didn't fucking pay attention.

he's nowhere near this section, he finished last stream beating the Airbuster. He's at least 2 streams away from the Honeybee inn section.

I remember it being pretty tame. I think the person who runs the dress shop makes a remark about not expecting Cloud to be "that type of guy" or something along those lines. Aeris laughs and does that animation that kinda makes it look like she's trying to eat corn or something. The dude in the gym just talks about enjoying being fabulous. You can also passout in the Honeybee inn and either be slapped awake by a dude in a speedo, with the dialogue making it sound like they're boning at first, or you end up in a hot tub with a bunch of other dudes. I think there might be some other optional NPC who says Cloud is "one of those guys" when you try and get another item for the quest.

Overall, it is a very much a light hearted/goofy section that is played for laughs right before the much more serious story beat of Sector 7 being destroyed/several of your NPC teammates being killed.

Can't really speak for the remake, but based on what other people have said, it sounds like it is still a pretty light hearted section and certainly not anything edgy. I don't even know how you'd make that section edgy because it is so over the top in general.

Might as well add this as well(couldn’t be bothered to go get the tweet from his actual account this time)

I love how he describes the cross dressing section, he’ll actually enjoy the stream tomorrow since it’s not that part. It’s straight up impossible for him to find any sort of enjoyment from that section of the game in his mind, meanwhile I’m sure any video or stream of someone at that section will probably get a few easy chuckles out of it at worst.

I’ll be very interested in seeing a direct comparison to his reactions to the cross dressing and literally everyone else’s on the Internet. Most people at worst might give it a couple or cheap laughs followed by “oh wow this is great” or “dang they really went all out for this scene”meanwhile Dave is going to obviously be the only mature adult on the Internet putting his hands over his face and giving the most uncomfortable snake laughs of his life while explaining how bad the scene is

How is it even edgy? This trope has been around forever for both genders. Zelda BOTW came out during the height of the SJW craze and has a cross dressing segment to get into the all female city. I haven't seen dsp play that, what was his reaction at the time?
I found it
He’s clearly uncomfortable by it to some degree, but it’s not like how he’s projecting the final fantasy scene in those tweets. He does describe it as zelda jumping the shark though

this was 3 years ago though, and he’s a mature married adult now. I’m most interested to see if he elaborates on how much he hated the 7 cross dressing as a teen
