If you would indulge me on something:

How much do we really know about how/when/why Jake first started trooning out?

In my headcanon, it went something like this:
  1. [2014] GamerGate happens.

  2. Jake, being the living incarnation of the Nerd Social Fallacies, believes he has found his maiden to rescue.
He develops a crush on Zoe (who doesn't know he exists), and dreams of defending her and comforting her and making her his girlfriend.

  3. Jake creates a twitter account in order to get close to Zoe.
As a ploy to quickly gain clout in the anti-GG twitter scene surrounding Zoe, he calls the account "SecretGamerGrrl" and commits to the "Everyone listen to me, I'm one of those poor little girls targeted by GG!" persona.

  4. The ploy works: His account becomes a big name in the anti-GG scene, and he becomes part of Zoe's CON group.

  5. The other CON members want to meet/speak at conventions in real life.
Jake hadn't thought this far ahead when he created the SGG persona.
But luckily (or tragically?) for Jake, it's the 21st century, and there's a way to square his twitter persona with his real-life Gnomehood:
    Claim to be trans.

  6. Jake goes to conventions as a zero-effort troon wearing sweatpants and a massive beard.

  7. Jake strikes at Based Randi and misses, and gets himself excommunicated from CON and Zoe's inner circle.
    It devastates him.
All he has left from his glory days, is a twitter account with many followers and a trans identity.

  8. With increasing neuroticism and paranoia, Jake descends further and further into fringe trans twitter (the Norasphere and beyond), and adopts many of the antics common among twitter troons (such as displays of autogynephilia).

  9. [2019] Jake changes his legal name and gender.

  10. Welcome to current Jake Violet.
...But that timeline involves some speculation, and if I've got something wrong, I'd like to know.

He's a weirdo and a pervert but I still think his trooning is more materialistic than fetishistic. He thinks if he were an attractive young women he'd have the job offers and con invited he wants and he's not exactly wrong. Plenty of fake nerd girls are making a killing on Onlyfans and Twitch but again that's the fault of people like Jake.

How much do we really know about how/when/why Jake first started trooning out?

Jake - like most troons - was just a sad, kissless NEET. And like most troons, he also decided that being someone else completely was the key to getting both the successful career in gaming and manic pixie dream girlfriend that he felt he was entitled to....and for a while, it actually worked.

Seeing how Anita and Chelsea were building a career on being Professional Victims, Jake wanted in on that action and thus, "Violet Hargrave" and his SGG Twitter account were born. For a while, Jake started to get what he wanted...."friends", attention, freelance gigs in tabletop gaming....but most of all, he got into Chelsea's orbit as part of her CON Inner Circle.

However, Jake had to go and ruin it all by being Jake. He didn't think his whole "trans" idea all the way through, He couldn't fully take advantage of all the opportunities that "Violet" got him, since he was only LARPing as a trans woman. Jake is too lazy and/or stubborn to shave his beard and dress up as a woman, citing lame excuses as "lesbian gangs will rape me!" and "My Nazi mother would let me starve to death!". The best he could do was glom onto Tanya DePass and Katherine Cross, and use the former for free access to cons and the latter to shill his failed MvM game.

Then he REALLY fucked up by taking up with Nora REEEd against Randi Harper, who was best buds with Chelsea, thus earning his waifu's anger and getting excommunicated from the Kewl Kidz Klub. Despite this, Jake continued to be Zoe's rabid attack dog, making it his life's work to sic Twitter mobs on anyone who so much as looked at Chelsea funny in hopes of getting back in her good graces. This resulted in him going after a bisexual woman of color with a lot more pull in the gaming industry than him or Chelsea - Soha Kareem.

This was the final straw, and both DePass and Cross cut off access from him. Jake, of course, as too stubborn and/or autistic to realize he fucked up and proceeded to do what he always does when he screws up: blame it on Nazis (full-on AND card carrying!) and gamergate. Then, just to dig his grave further, decided to gnome wail and suicide bait Chelsea on Twitter as a ploy to guilt her into letting him slide into her DMs again. It goes without saying that it did not end up with Zoe standing outside his window holding up a boombox playing "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel.

Whatever goodwill and connections he built up with his SGG/Violet persona was now dead and gone. All he has left is his "friendships" with various other NEETs-turned-troons waiting on the outer fringes of gaming, hoping to feast on crumbs like Jake once did. Of course, Jake being Jake, he will cling to his delusion of being a busty redhead until the day he dies - despite everyone within and without SJW circles knowing full well that he is and will always be Our Little Attic Gnome.

I think he’s had weird embarrassing fetishes since high school that made him very uncomfortable. Stuff like Transformation and a thing for big titty R. Crumb like women rescuing him. (Im not going to touch the more gory and nipple stuff)

All those fetishes becomes “cool” if you are trans, but are just creepy and gross if you’re a fat, bearded NEET dude.

Going with the trans shit was just another form of role play to Jake. It gave him social e-cred for goobergate in SJW circles which he would never have gotten being a kicking boy, white male feminist chump. It also gave him away to indulge in his transformation fetish publicly and be praised and encouraged while doing so.

Now he could write his transformation potion fanfic masturbation ideas publicly and have people cheering him on and wanting to discuss it. (It’s obvious that talking about it in great detail is a big turn on for lots of troon Fetishists)

It also gave him entry into troon circles so he could meet big strong women with dicks to tickle that itch. He can praise them for being sexy women and that makes him enlightened instead of getting accused of creeping on them.

Above all Jake can force himself into a “community.” Jake has never had friends, just family members who tolerated/pitied him. Being trans meant he could demand entry into various e-social groups because “Im one of you” or denying him entry was transphobia.

I mean roleplaying troon had lots of upside and little down. I don’t think he ever intended to take real life but got carried away and turned on so much that he decided to actually order some dresses to wear while jerking off and get some hormones to take so rubbing his nipples was even more erotic. (gag, puke, I have to stop typing about this now)

I dunno, I do suspect fetishism at work to some degree. During his "dark period" (circa 2010-2014, pre-Violet) he got into Eclipse Phase (some sort of transhumanism-themed RPG with an emphasis on body swapping), and made works like Eat Quest which featured a man who turns into a tall, busty woman. He's also strongly hinted that he was a reader of Fictionmania.

He can't have been insensible to the materialistic aspects - GOTIS is well known - but I do think the original spark was in his loins.

EDIT:
The other CON members want to meet/speak at conventions in real life.
Jake hadn't thought this far ahead when he created the SGG persona.

I don't think we have good data on this point. He claimed to be trans on the SGG twitter account from the very beginning, and as far as I'm aware we don't have any earlier history between Jake and CON.

We know he was thinking about how his moobs are basically boobs prior to his "Zoe can't call me a creepy old man if I'm a woman" gambit. As early as 2005 he talks about how he thinks he's a hermaphrodite and if you shot him with a sex-change ray he wouldn't mind. Easy, 100% effective sex-change is a fixation that crops up in a lot of his writing and which he carried over into his modern conception of how sex-changes actually work. If you'll indulge me in a tangent I think grants us some insight, he reminds me a lot of Dan Shive:

Shive is the fat, acne scarred, balding, bespectacled artist of the webcomic El Goonish Shive, in which ostensibly some gay plot about magic advances in the background while in practice he draws a series of gag-of-the-week scenes where teenagers get shot with transformation rays, primarily of the bimbofication variety. He swears blue that it's not a fetish but he also talks a lot about how he doesn't like his own body and his self insert OC (he denies it but it's not ambiguous) is "bigender" and troon-rays himself a lot. While there's obviously a fetish component I think Shive and to bring it back around Jake have always fantasized about escaping their own bodies in some capacity, and their fantasies have become increasingly desperate as they got uglier and fatter with age.

Consider how much Jake talks about how attractive trans women are. "They look 20 years younger," the 39 year old man insists. "They have super soft skin with perfect complexion," he continues. "Estrogen makes their gunt magically migrate to their tits," he assures himself. We have the timeline of tweets where he claimed HRT reverses male pattern baldness and eliminates body hair and tweets from the respective days he found out those aren't the case, after which he just stopped talking about how hirsute and bald he is. My two cents says Jake, who is on record as interacting primarily with "gender nonconforming" internet pals as early as the record goes, saw the emperor's new clothes praise of trannies and wanted in. He either pretends to be trans specifically to fantasize about not being old, fat, hairy and bald or possibly he believes that any day now the bimbo banana gel really will kick in and turn him into a smoking hot young woman.

Yeah, for sure. I think his “life on easy mode” beliefs also extend to being a damsel in distress, which fitted in with his general helplessness.

I do agree with the people above suggesting there’s a strong fetish element. My personal theory is that he watched Ranma 1/2 at a formative age, hence also his specific fetish for busty redheads.

Ultimately, I think it’s a combination of factors. He’s always had a fetish for transformation, he’s an incel who thinks women have it easy, the trans trend made him seriously consider trooning out as an option and his lonely online existence made it possible for him to do so with minimal effort (up to a point). I think he genuinely believes he’s trans, but he has no idea what being a woman actually means. He thinks being pathetic and getting horny when he thinks about tits is all it comes down to.

Agree. Jake isnt clever enough to come up with a character to play to gain clout on twitter. His beliefs in well everything he says is true. Hes too autistic to tell outright lies but instead tells half truths and vagueposts.
We just havent traced where it came from. We dont know who "hatched" Jake if anybody. His transformation is similar to CWC's though. Both roleplayed as their female counterparts (CWC's crystal to Jake's buxom redhead). Both are failed male autists who spent their whole lives being coddled by mothers and other women in their lives. Both are pervert weeb NEETs.. We just dont know for a fact that Jake wore his mother's underwear but it wouldnt surprise me.

He still makes small mentions of it, but it’s clear he wants to do no work to make it happen and just expects all the talented people to show up and do it for him.
In a week or two we’ll get a series of tweets about how it... didn’t happen, with a slightly passive-aggressive hint that it’s because no one else was willing to help.

Hey, he's streamed a total of 24 hours in the past 7 days, that's like, 4 hours a day of ESSENTIAL GAMING per work day that needed to happen and not prepping for a con. Sometimes we have to make hard decisions of where to allocate our time and energy!

Four hours of gaming a day, he's even a half assing pansy at nerd shit. I do more than that while working a full time job, hanging out with friends, dating and going out.

IIRC he’s been streaming the first 10 minutes of every game in his Steam library and just got through D.

And uncoincidentally, SGG is "just reminded" today to really get on that website...

So I can't pull it up exactly at this moment but Jake has mentioned this "event" enough times to tell pretty much what it is, and he's told it both on Twitter and Talking-Time and it also lingers on his Googleshng rants page or thereabouts I think. But none of what Jake says in this tweet is true except for the "highly anticipated game" and how each part is a few steps from the truth, and he's told this story everytime with little lies increasing like this. A common Jake move as you'll probably recall.

The reality is that it was some American PR person who criticized a sentence or so in Jake's review of Dragon Quest VII in 2000, which he gave like a 7/10 or 8/10 not a near perfect score, by accusing Jake of not understanding or not having played the game correctly in a regular "letter to the editor" e-mail to the RPG website (edit: RPGamer!) Jake wrote game reviews for. This story escalated to the "creator" of Dragon Quest sending a demand "his employer" fire him over a bad review on Talking-Time which is slightly less true, and then a few years later on Twitter here you can see Jake has increased the story to include actual letters of death threats over a now 9.9/10 review in the 1990s to make it sound like he wrote for an actual big name game magazine.

Some time ago, we here at RPGamer adopted a new stricter system for writing reviews. The original plan was for each review posted on site to be screened by two other official reviewers. Somehow this quite quickly changed to a policy where every review was screened by me. While the task of harping over the grammar of half a dozen people can be quite time consuming, it gives me a sense of pride to know that every review on the site lives up to a standard I'm comfortable with.

Obviously I don't spend all my time writing and proofreading reviews. Most of my day is spent playing through RPGs in order to review them. RPGamer has always had a policy that no game can be reviewed until it has been completed. Normally this isn't a big deal, but when I receive a review copy of an hundred hour game just under two weeks before the release date, it can become quite a challenge to beat the clock. This policy is also the reason why the average score of my reviews is a bit above a 5. The truly terrible games have a tendency to gather dust, particularly when not officially assigned to me.

While to be quite honest there isn't more to my life than the playing and reviewing of games, when I take a break to get some air, the scenery is quite nice. I live in a small secluded area surrounded by trees, but within walking distance of civilization.

Since there isn't much more to be said about me, and I still have some space to fill, let me just make a general reply to all the e-mail I've ever received about my reviews since my e-mail setup doesn't allow me to do so directly.

If you have a problem with an aspect of one of my reviews and wonder what I was thinking, read it again and pay more attention.

If you found a review of mine particularly helpful and complimented me on it, I'm glad I could be of service.
