Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

So another tornado outbreak with yet another one closely following coming to US this Sunday. Shelters still remain closed because of "the virus is still around!" despite the heavy damage to life last week because they remained closed. And those who get their homes destroyed go to virus-infested homeless shelters anyway...
Why can they not just spend the effort to heavily enforce social distancing?

It sounds like there is much more goodwill towards fellow countrymen in Spain, the U.S. has a huge problem with animosity between different regions. People are taking a lot of glee in the suffering of their fellow Americans here, we're very divided. This isn't something new, but this pandemic is bringing it to a head in a lot of ugly ways.

It's pretty demoralizing honestly.

Hahahhahahaha. Dude. You have not seen how catalonians and andalusians treat each other if you think spain's unified. And madrid did the same fucking thing as NY with the exception that unlike NY our gov and opposition took their side and syphoned a fuckton of medical supplies that were needed elsewhere, specially ventilator, we still got a ventilator shortage over here actually. You can go a few pages back and you'll see my rants on that, shit got scary.

Point is, honestly, by european standards we're the most divided. Fuck we got Autonomous communities which are basically like your states, we got gypsies that are similar to your niggers. Our PP's done mostly the same as your Dems. Morocco is to us what Mexico is to you. Portugal is our Canada. Basically spain is burgerland lite.

But it does seem like the "lite" part involves our issues being lessened significantly, and I find that fascinating. On prior pages I linked to stats showing spain basically has less criminality, less suicides, less antisocial tendencies, less drug addiction... basically less of everything stereotypically bad. Yet you have a SIGNIFICANTLY better economy, way less unemployed, less poverty, economically you make us look like we're the 3rd fucking world.

I honestly don't get it. It's like despite america being a bigger, more powerful, economically more stable, generally just objectively better country, instead of that being a source of pride and bringing you together, you've found everincreasingly strange reasons to be more and more polarized, hateful, criminal and violent to each other.

And I guess in a way some will just say "bad times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create bad times" like they always do but... I don't know that seems way too reductive to me. Humans are better than that, I like to think they are at least. There has to be more behind why america is imploding like this despite being possibly the best country in the world. But by the life of me I don't know what the reason actually is.

Just returned from the base gas station/exchange/commissary.

Didn't need gas last week. Put in $20 today, filled it up. $2.59/gallon. Noticed there were no paper towels for wiping off windshields and very little fluid in the washing fluid/squeegee area. No sweat. Pulled out roll of paper towels kept in the trunk and got it done. Surmised either the people at the gas station either didn't have paper towels or were too lazy to put in the supplies. Either is just as likely.

Went by base exchange. Learned mask was needed. Put it on. Got what I needed and got the hell out.

Lastly, commissary. No garrison commander here this Saturday. He deserves a weekend off. Put on mask, went inside. Overall, improvement. Plenty of water, but not in all sizes. Got two one-gallon bottles vice the usual 2.5 gallon bottle. No seaweed, no string-type imitation crab or other Asian products. More toilet paper than before. Got a big pack just in case. Had a few rolls of paper towels left, got two. Had a few boxes of tissues there but needed none.

Still some thin areas and empty spaces on shelves. Good supply of rice. Thought our local Asian contingent would have cleaned it out. Bread, milk and egg supply good. Some shortages of yogurt and cheeses. Egg prices down from $3.75 for 12 jumbo eggs to $3.13. Frozen foods overall pretty good, just a little short on the frozen desserts. Found the ice cream I wanted. Got a big bag of frozen French fries. No baby wipes. Found something my grandson will enjoy. Short of many types of vitamins.

Was waiting to check out. Watched some old bitch whine to the checkout lady when she was told she could get only two of any item except produce and meat. Signs all over the store, including right next to the entrance to the checkout stands. Checkout lady took her to the sign right in front of me, showed the old twat. Bitch kept complaining. "Paper towels aren't an item! Toilet paper isn't an item!" She pointed at the two rolls of paper towels in my basket and said, "You can't get two of those!" I laughed at her and said, "Sure I will!" Bitch kept up her rant and rave all the time she checked out, took forever to pay. Finally left. After the old sow departed asked checker if she was okay. Have known her and her son, also an employee, for years. She just smiled, "I've seen them all over the years, but thanks for asking, Joe."

I get frustrated at stores these days, too. But I don't blame anyone at the commissary. Nobody there, in contrast to civilian stores, seems to be taking an iota of pleasure of seeing customers having to wear masks, keeping distance in line, and not being able to get what they need. They are not fucking with the customers. Have known some of the employees almost 25 years. Another thing about the base gas station, exchange, and commissary - they are military facilities. Employees from manager on down are friendly, used to the occasional upset person. But if someone causes enough trouble their shopping privileges can be suspended or revoked. Around here, that could be very costly.

So. Let me give you my thoughts on the whole EU situation:

Up until now it's been fairly obvious the EU was germany's reich. But, how this is developing makes me think there might be other interests at play. Let's go with historical precedents:

Let's be honest. Germany's biggest mistake is it's incapacity to find good allies. I mean holy shit they literally never could make an alliance that didn't backfire. But there's another thing. Germany never managed to keep their allies from getting it into trouble.

-WW1: everyone knows that the reason Germany was so involved was the Kaiser's fear of russian industrialization. But who actually declared war on half the fucking continent? The austro-hungarians, then when the germans joined the allies saw it as a chance to fuck them over, and the ottomans kept triggering random ass countries to join in too. Finally even within the central powers, it was the austrians pissing off the italians every few days. Only one the germans actually pulled into the war was the US-fucking-A.

-WW2: Sure everyone knows the meme that hitler declared war on the fucking planet. But let's assume it, peace between the USSR and the nazis was impossible, and the allies were primed to attack him as soon as they reformed. So if anything it was mostly preemptive attacks, even the polish got into it because france pulled them in, and then abbandoned them, fucking cunts. Who however really did declare war on half the planet? Mussoliny. Mussoliny just kept fucking triggering random people gratuituously until war was impossible, so really, it wasn't the germans pissing everyone off, at least not until the ((((six gorrillion))))

-and now: EVERYONE has reasons to be pissed off at Merkel. Whenever the EU wants to piss someone off Merkel *ejem*NEGOTIATES*ejem* with them, she keeps acting like she owns europe and practically everyone knows she's the most benefitted. But is germany actually the one most benefited? Are the EU laws rigged for it? Well they kind of are, Germany certainly benefits a lot. But the ones that actually benefit the most are france, luxemburg and the netherlands, and most EU regulations are designed at ensuring the satisfaction of france and their moroccan allies. Not germany, they're only really second best here, it's the god damned baguettes that really decide how this cart is pushed, Merkel just ACTS as if she owns the place but its macaronni carbonara that's behind her really.

And just look at this new legislation. France has that reunion where they practically admit they think the EU is plummeting and their strategy will be to grab the money and run with it, and at first the EU tries some bullshit strategy that everyone calls out, then they bend to french interests. And about that strategy everyone called out: who was benefitted again? Not germany, the multinationals. Almost every fucking thing the EU has done about this crisis until now is to benefit the multinational bizzes and the international initiatives every fucking time. Never only germany, germany allways gets a cut, but they never get the real lion's share.

And even this virus. Everyone knows Italy was sold to the chinks. But who actually cooperated with them in the higher levels? The french ministers. Then I have to ask with german media joining everyone else in pointing at china, why it seems the EU is the only one hell bent on protecting those chinese pacts... well. The EU and france of course.

And going back in time, everyone knows how much the HRE sucked, but it wasn't germans in power, it was austrians. Everyone knows how much the holy see sucked, but that was italians, everyone knows about the protestant-catholic wars, but the protestants were guided by the interests of the brits and balkans, and the catholics italy and france. Germany is never the real fucking leader they're just the god damned powerhouse whoever is in power uses to stay in power.

So, for the reasons explained in that tism outbreak, I have to ask is Germany's real issue might be the fact that they make for the perfect fucking fall guys because they're too willing to LOOK like the assholes in charge when really there's almost always someone pulling their fucking strings. Either that or I'm overthinking it.
Ah, a fellow Patrician who also has realized the threat of the eternal Austrian.

A large part of that is thanks to the insane amount of tribalism that was pushed during the last President - the man set race relations back decades. In addition, until Trump took office you had the Democrats using Republicans as a constant punching bag along with a media that was all too content to join in on the slander. There's a reason that the mainstream media's so vehemently distrusted in America outside of Democrats.

I wasn't paying attention too much in the George W Bush administration as I was too young to care about that, but the politics of the past twelve years have done severe harm to the social cohesion of the United States of America. And it doesn't matter whether or not Trump gets re-elected as both parties are content making money while the division spreads.

It's bipartidism at fault then. Yeah I guess that does make sense. The american electoral system's garbage and the cloak and dagger bullshit astonishing. Fuck our system is mildly rigged towards bipartidism and even that just caused immense issues until Podemos broke that record after Rajoi's cataclismic debacle. And I really hope we can stop even that level of rigging before it gets worse again. Considering how thoroughly the american system is rigged against small parties, that would indeed caused some heavy political issues. Sad to see them filtering to everything else like this... Trump seems to have no real allegiances so I hope next legislature (and at this point he IS gonna win that's inevitable) he can take a sword to that shit and stop the 2 party system. 'Cause god damn... It's really holding you back.

It's a hedonic treadmill to an extent, as people jockey for relative social position and try to find reasons why they haven't achieved happiness despite their material needs being met. When household stuff was expensive, the nobility would jam their houses full of stuff. Once stuff became cheap but land became expensive, the homes of the wealthy showed off how much effectively wasted space they could have. Similarly, you have to find a reason why you're better than Those People to make yourself stand out. I'd say that most people who are super-polarized/polarizing are deeply invested in what they perceive as their place in the pecking order, and there's no amount of general social welfare and abundance that will eliminate that.

Some older lady I'm Facebook friends with shared this post from some hysterical liberal boomer page. I read through the comments and it's almost scary how many people believe this shit.

Patrick and Amelia. Two fucking asshole kids we can do without.

Okay let's get that stock market back on track.

How bad are things going to become if the US now goes full FREEEEEEEEDOM-Autism and refuses to engage in social distancing?
I mean, there are some states with such a low density in their population, spread would not be that big a deal, but medical supplies would be stretched af, too.

Hope you guys get that shit sorted out.

News from the Polish academia - apparently scientists came up with an innovative mask. Apologies for the weird source - this is the only mention of this I could find in English. It is touted in the Polish mediasphere though, so could be real. Archive
We are also seeing the come back of national production - according to the government Polish sewing shops are going to make 100 million protective masks out of locally sourced materials and export some of them to other EU countries. Archive
Ruling party is also doing their damnedest best to rig the upcoming presidential elections, but that's beside the point...
Would be glad if we pulled out whatever we can from china and start producing that stuff in Poland, Italy, Hungary, Greece, Spain and so on. Would make a lot of stuff more expensive, but for certain things that are relevant (like medical stuff), we need to keep that shit close to ourselves in Europe and if it helps create jobs and wealth for nations weakened by EU shenanigans of the past, I would welcome that a lot.
anything to stave off the attack of the winged huscarls for another season

Our PP's done mostly the same as your Dems.
There is a dick-joke involving impotency in there somewhere, just can't seem to piece it together.

There was a similar finding in the Netherlands. 3% of all blood donors had antibodies. 3% of their population is over half a million, so with their death count at 3459, mortality rate would be well below 1%... But of course that's the known death count, we have no idea how many people had it and died before they started connecting the dots. And 3% of all blood donors doesn't translate directly to 3% of the total population, since the sample is mostly just healthy young-to-middle-aged city folk. Tells us nothing about children or old people, for one.
Wouldn't surprise me if after this is over, we figure out that the lethality rate even in places hard hit like Spain and Italy, turns out to be very, very low and the high number of deaths compared to the number of known cases is due to a shitton of people getting infected without even realizing it.
Even with that in mind, we still had a shitton of people dying the past few weeks cause so many people got sick so quickly, the medical system could not keep up.

And frankly, when it turns out, that the lethality was actually really low, it would be scary to think there was a sickness as contagious but more deadly. Just imagine Ebola with a 2 week delay between being infected and showing symptoms, while you are contagious yourself during half that time. Jesus.

Which is why maybe one of the good things to come out of this will be better preparation strategies for the future. This virus doesn't actually kill that many people compared to viruses that kill 60 to 90% of infected.

Closing Tornado shelters during Tornado outbreaks, because “Coronavirus!” is the absolute worst costs benefits analysis ever performed by a government employee, and somebody should be facing homicide charges for ordering it. You can’t let people into the tornado shelter during the tornado because they “might” catch or spread the Coronavirus? This is failing to avoid clear and present emergent danger to life, because of a secondary theoretical danger. It’s incompetence of the highest order.

Something fucky is going on with the recovery numbers.

According to Worldometer 736,472 out of 2,261,631 or 32% have outcomes. 79% of those recovered 21% of those died.

My local government is saying out of 256 cases, 179 or or 70% have outcomes. More than double. 98.3% are recoveries and 1.7% are deaths.

So what's happening here? Is the local government catching more milder cases that most? Are worldwide recoveries under-reported? Does being a densely populated petri-dish like New York City and getting coofed on on the subway and shit increase the viral load so much outcomes are worse? Any insight?

Something doesn't add up, and like I said before, the government where I am would not be capable over covering up a bunch of deaths given how interconnected everyone is and how gossip goes around so it's not that. If someone is covering something up its a bigger more capable government covering up recoveries for some reason.

I think the recovery numbers are wrong (along with deaths and cases). It depends on what country your talking about as to why they are wrong though.
China flat out lied on everything and their numbers are usless.

Iran? Iran from the start was lying about their recoveries. They had their inital case numbers recovered in less than a week and crap like that went on for a good chunk of march. They were account for more than half of the non china recoveries daily for the world. Total BS.

The USA recovery number whent up really slow. Sitting on the same number for a week at a time. Were they being careful or was the paperwork sitting in someones inbox for days at a time. Is there still some sort of slowness going on?

Germany. Last seven days 57,400 / 60,300 / 64,300 / 68,200 / 72,600 / 77,000 / 83,114. You can see the problem there.

Those are the easy one right off the top of my head. You can pick apart a number of other counties numbers the same way.

Problem with the recovery numbers is theres no real standard between countries on what or when a recovery is counted, people lying to make their country look better, some might be lying to scare their population, and some might be slipping through the cracks or sitting on a desk somewhere waiting for a signature. God knows what else can be wrong with them and the case and death number have similar problems.

As for whats happening? What it looks like to me is countries whos government doesnt step on its dick with its response and have a halfway decent medical system that doesnt get overwhelmed isnt having a big problem. It does seem, like you say, that large stacked cities with more mass transit have a much worse problem.

A very sobering read. Send this to anyone who still claims that this pandemic is a hoax:

As the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 surges past 2.2 million globally and deaths surpass 150,000, clinicians and pathologists are struggling to understand the damage wrought by the coronavirus as it tears through the body. They are realizing that although the lungs are ground zero, its reach can extend to many organs including the heart and blood vessels, kidneys, gut, and brain.

“[The disease] can attack almost anything in the body with devastating consequences,” says cardiologist Harlan Krumholz of Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital, who is leading multiple efforts to gather clinical data on COVID-19. “Its ferocity is breathtaking and humbling.”

The doctors tried a drug called Actemra (aka Tocilizumab, a drug that was brought up earlier in the thread), which was designed to treat rheumatoid arthritis but also approved in 2017 to treat cytokine storms in cancer patients.

Doctor fired after criticizing his hospital for coronavirus response
April 3, 2020
“Our role was to quiet the storm,” said Dr. Samuel Youssef, a cardiac surgeon. “Dr. Padgett was able to clear the virus” once his immune system was back in balance.
...
Dr. Matt Hartman, a cardiologist, said that after four days on the immunosuppressive drug, supplemented by high-dose vitamin C and other therapies, the level of oxygen in Padgett’s blood improved dramatically. On March 23, doctors were able to take him off life support.

Interesting vlog from a pilot:

This is all true. The bad air quality in NYC causes higher rates of asthma, bronchitis, and other breathing issues throughout life. They're actually studying how much the environment directly causes asthma in children. I have asthma, and in NYC it was the worst it has ever been. I got sick at least once a year. Never had it happen anywhere else in the US, and I've lived all over. I didn't even consider the food deserts, but yeah, most people survive off fast food or what is available at the bodegas (example: the produce section consist of 10 bananas, a handful of apples, and a single potato).

I bet the homeless population had a hand in spreading coronavirus wider than in other cities. The population of homeless is absurd in NYC, and they are very anti-social and basically form their own societies. Not to mention NYC is the only place I've seen biblical levels of poverty within the US. I've seen an man stumbling down the sidewalk of downtown Manhattan with no shoes, no socks, no shirt, and basically a towel wrapped around his waist. No one blinked twice as he ran into them and coughed all over. No wonder everyone is sick there.

Protests are breaking out all over.

Also fuck LA Times. They're trying to convince people to stay inside until 2022. Absolute lunacy.

You know that those protests are done by the far right... don't you? The Repubs have been weaponizing their hardliners and have been targeting several states mostly swings states for the coming election. And they know that the media will pick it up because it makes clicks/viewings. Politics in action.

What gives it away? As Mr. David Carrol would say, "Not one Negro in the Crowd". (hahahahaha)

Mr. David Carroll... He's an interesting dude and there is a lot of truth in what he says. If you are bored and need something to do, grab a six pack and listen to him and you might start start laughing... in my case It's the same bullshit that I dealt with during the crack head 80's.

It'll be fun to see what kind of jump in cases, if any, we see 8 to ten days down the road in Florida from opening the beaches. I dont think it'll mean much though. What we really need is a city opened as a test case, somewhere like Austin Texas cause if it went bad there nobody would miss it.

I vote for reopening NYC. Don't think anyone'd miss it.

Conspiritards still claim this is just the flu (bro) and that if we didn't have this much media attention focused on the sickness, we wouldn't even have noticed...

And I'm sitting here wondering, how much worse it needs to be. Corpses get crammed into ice-skating rings, cause funeral homes can't keep up and hospitals are full to the brim with sick people that need invasive mechanical ventilation.
Yeah. Without the media circus, we would have totally not noticed the fucking refrigerated trucks used to store corpses in a major city.
