I'm not sure what Billy is thinking beyond bad puns but it can be true that something isn't genetic but you can still be born with it. Basically its not just the DNA but also what happens in mommy's belly has life long effects on the baby. It's well known that some medications and illness can result in birth defects and there are theories that hormone balance during pregnancy is what can make someone gay.

If you have a dispute with someone there even as a local the Police will side with whoever bribes them more. I’ve been explicitly told that if you have a dispute with someone, you’re better off going to a local crime gang or if you’re really desperate go to the military. The former aren’t much better than Police but if you keep paying protection not even the cops will fuck with you and they actually ask for less than the police, as for the military - you better have served yourself and have some connection in the Communist Party or else they won’t even be able to do anything about it.

And the party there isn’t some Utopian Socialist party like LaBelle wants. Ho Chi Minh even said Nationalism inspired him more than Communism and even while he was connected to the Communist International he was in touch with local Nationalist Groups. He repeatedly offered Ngo Dinh Diem who was borderline Fascist a coalition government and the reason Ngo never went for it was because Ho wasn’t a Catholic. The Communist Party isn’t even the official ruling party anymore, a Coalition Called “The Viet Nam Fatherland Front” is technically in charge and that sounds like one of those parties that emerged in the 1930s in Europe.

Trans rights? Well from what I was told every city has a district home to LGBT people, and generally society just kind of ignores it. But again, the police there are really corrupt so they get fucked with too and the police are even less likely to care if someone attacks them I’d imagine.

It's only the younger generation that doesn't care. In Saigon, I only saw one open trans person and that was in district 1 (tourist party district). They worked at one of the bars doing kareoke, and trying to lure people in for drinks.

The younger generation doesn't care but they still think it's "weird." It's pretty well assumed that the person is trans only to cater to that niche in the sex trade market, not cause of dysphoria or anything.

The older generation thinks you're ill so if you're trans, they are likely to send you a disapproving hiss accompanied by the aggressive head nod.
