Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

That's true but in New York the poor get Medicaid, even illegals. A large part of the poor suffer from chronic illnesses, most of which can be managed with ongoing and preventive care, but if the state extends it to Paco and his extended family then every Hartley Hooligan and their grandma from Puebla will arrive and crash the system. Which is what happened; in fact, a huge amount of the cases filling up Elmhurst Hospital came from these "immigrant" neighborhoods. A lifetime of eating greasy tacos resulted in a lot of those China virus deaths.

Ah yeah. Healthcare tourism. We know how that one goes here in spain. What we do is send the illegals back home before they can get to the hospital. EU really doesn't like that, we got fined for it in the past. We don't give a shit. We'd rather contain the tourists to the civilized countries. Illegals can get bent. You know, it's funny, spain is infamous for the amount of 3rd world leaking into europe through us, but we do a lot more than merkel would like to make sure that's minimized. Precisely because of this shit. Kinda funny then that USA, infamous for having ICE running around with the international press treating it like they're the spanish inquisition (pun intended) would be laxer than our sorry asses.

No. They don't.

I have no idea why this is a conservative talking point because it's objectively wrong.

Can you give an alternate explanation why 1/3rd of NY Medicaid recipients are ineligible for reimbursement as per the CARES Act? The only explanation is that 1/3rd of people receiving NY Medicaid shouldn't be getting it under Federal law.

Yeah, nobody has elevated methb. I was wrong on that.

Hyperferritinemia though...something's going on. So you can see where I was going with it.

I feel like this is so obvious everyone already knows and just aren't mentioning, but could the hyperferritinemia be connected with sickle cell anemia and thalassemia? (I have a trait of the latter disorder, inherited through family from southern China.) In these conditions, as far as I understand it, our hemoglobins aren't the right shape and therefore iron is unable to bond properly. Doctors in the UK don't care about my condition much and continued to pressurise me to take iron, despite it causing iron overload.

Sickle cell anemia has the famous sickle shape, which causes these cells to create blockages in blood vessels which are painful. Ofc, SCA is very prevalent in Africa. And interestingly provides protection against malaria, just like quinine. Thalassemia is common (apparently) in Mediterranean and Asian countries.

Forgive my only general knowledge about this and it might be nothing.

Went to one of the usual non-LA County beaches that was supposed to be open. Signs were up saying the beach was soft closed (so no sitting on the sand or sunbathing - you had to keep moving). Many cops were there. Some beach ranger on a golf cart came through and told everybody who was setting up towels in the sand to keep moving. She went all the way down the waterfront telling people this, then circled back to our end and started hanging out pieces of white paper to everyone who was still sitting there. Friend and I decided it was a great time to go swimming and noped out into the waves. *shrug*. Life is weird. I guess they haven't given up on the lockdown yet.

People are coming back to their usual shenanigans. I went out to buy snacks and some hobo looking fellow without a mask was having a shouting match with some shop keepers across the street. As weeks go by, more and more people are outside during the daytime. Looks like people are becoming bored and restless. People are becoming less and less cooperative.

What's really alarming are idiots who wear masks but keep their noses uncovered. Why even bother?

The lack of knowledge regarding the most basic safety precautiouns has been one of the scariest things about this whole scare.

Your absolutely correct, feel free to laugh at me for forgetting basic math. I will also go commit harikiri from shame. But still the blatantly obvious fake china numbers
Of course that's without know the true extent of the infections on our end since we are barely testing.

To talk about a slightly more lighthearted topic, what are y'all's bets on when restaurants will allow dine in again?

Probably will depend a lot on where you are. The Georgia Governor's allowing them to open this week, and some restaurants are already planning for their opening tomorrow; a lot of restaurants aren't, but some are. Others states/cities will probably keep things closed (or at least try) even if there haven't been any new fatalities for weeks and literally everyone around them has done it. Both of those positions are probably not good ones, but they're still things that will probably happen.

Realistically, though, it'll probably start rolling out more broadly by the end of May or beginning of June. Honestly, it's hard for me to get too much of a sense on things, since fatalities and hospitalizations have been quite low in my part of the country, but that seems like a reasonable guess.

Problem is people won't be dining in even if they are open because all of them are told to stay home. The degree of interaction in restaurant will be reduced to absolute zero and some restaurants will have to leave out tables for "spaces."

Some (most) restaurants need to fill those spaces to make ENDS MEET. This is going to fuck up the entire industry for so long.

On the other hand, people will stop opening up restaurants and fail at 90% rate. Maybe they will put their money somewhere where its worth it.

Speaking of being able to dine in at restaurants...have been thinking about our state's governor and his plan to give qualifying older people as much as $66/day to eat at selected restaurants.

Many of these older people will not have easy access to transportation. If they live in cities they may be able to take a bus or light rail. But there will be many who need to take taxis/Ubers/pay someone to take them places. Those people aren't going to be able to go out too often, if at all, to eat at these restaurants.

Another option could be to order the food and then have a delivery service bring the meal. Okay, the person has to pay the sales tax on the food, plus the delivery charge. Can you imagine doing that three times a day? Fuck, no! And even if a person can easily get to one of these restaurants, if the place is a sit-down restaurant, the diner will need to pay sales tax on the food, and a tip to the server. Not going to be able to do this three times a day, either. Many of the recipients of these vouchers/scrip/dog turds/whatever are on Social Security, which doesn't pay that much, or SSI, which pays even less.

There are some counties in the state that have been conducting a rather smaller version of this program. Intent is to provide "healthy food" for seniors. Yet the 19-page listing of the Los Angeles County eating establishments that take the vouchers/scrip contains a huge number of fast food/pizza places. Granted, these places may have some menu items considered "healthy food". Can you imagine someone going to one of these places, say, McDonald's (seriously) to eat, voucher in hand, and being told all they can get with their meal voucher is a McSalad? Or going to a Pizza Hut and being restricted to the salad bar only? And they can only have water or milk to drink?

For some reason don't believe the state will end up spending as much on these meals as they think. Many recipients will simply not be able to afford to participate. Better idea - just issue recipients debit cards so they can go wherever they want and eat as they please, or go to a store and buy the food. $66/day X 30 days = $1980/month to eat out on. Sweet!

The income cutoff is six times the national poverty level. Checked the 2020 national poverty levels. I qualify income-wise, and with my age and health background believe I have a good chance of getting those bucks.

We haven't even begun to see the economic fallout from all these house arrests. Could be terrible. But the people who impose and enforce these house arrests never miss a paycheck. They just don't give a flying fuck for anything or anyone except themselves and their personal power trips.

People I am speaking with (my furloughed coworkers) are laughing this off (because gov't is subsidizing their income) and thinking that listening to government/doctor is great and all but honestly they have no fucking idea their job is next in the line. I know I am safe because my boss and I are in this business for life but most of them will be fired/let go/leave eventually. I don't even bother arguing since I am just preparing for the worst myself because the writing is on the wall.

Id sooner take COVID to my heart and spread it everywhere than living in the street tbh.

Study finds coronavirus could be more contagious than previously thought

My take? It's CBS however it is an interesting report. For months I have stated that this is the most contagious virus I have ever seen. It has too many variables of getting people infected. And when infected it is attacking in many different areas on what looks like the entire body. From skin to brain to digestive tract to organs. I have never seen something this bad infest people in so many ways and damage so much of your body.

This also links why people are more prone getting ill in more polluted areas..
And remember there are several different strains out there as well.
This all makes sense. Especially if the Virus piggy backs on particulate matter as well.

This also make sense when certain home made material for masks is better than others.
https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/

And of course I stated to use a Hepa Filter device as well in your home.... several months in advance...
I stand by what I have stated in the past and will stand by what I have stated now. Because I'm Not sick and I've had to go to several different areas where people get sick. Like Hospitals to pick up medication that they can't mail. Perfectly free from the illness because I followed the Mantra of staying safe, which was posted here many of times on this topic.

This virus will not go away. It will be a seasonal thing and how bad the viruses mutate depends on the severity of the strain.

As stated before I believe some if not all of the virus will go dormant in the Summer months in the US but that all depends on your location and environment. We already seen on the geographical satellite maps that pollution went down across the globe. So when things start go back to some sort of normalcy, and they will, the pollution will increase so be prepared several months down the road for the strains to rear it's ugly head once again.

lol. NYC wants a $7,400,000,000 USD bailout for the Pinko Pox.

Also, the way Blasio says it, it really sounds like a blackmail threat.

"The federal government must make us whole for us to be able to be in a position to restart," De Blasio, a Democrat, said in an interview on Fox News. "If New York City is not whole, it will drag down the entire region, and it will hold up the entire national economic restart."

Put the money in the bag or the entire East coast stays shut down.

California wants to give qualifying seniors $66 a day for restaurant food? https://archive.vn/oAj0l

California food stamp eligibility and maximum amounts are...hmm. http://archive.vn/quMSL

Who comes up with this stuff? I think being a grownup with a government job isn't nearly as challenging and awe-inspiring as high school guidance counselors would have us believe.

AHAHAHA thats hilarious eat shit non-smokers.

In "most ironic news of the century", smokers are far less likely to die from covid:

Nicotine binds to the same ACE2 receptor as the coronavirus, so it may inhibit the viruses damage. Here is a more scholarly article on the same issue:

Wow. Okay I am now going to out myself as possibly the biggest dork that ever existed. There's a Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name fanfiction where a lung disease killed off a bunch of people, and smokers were resistant to it. http://archive.vn/Twcvu
I miss HINABN. Too bad the artist signed a fool's contract with a publisher and lost rights to her own work, then trooned out. The newer comic, Not Drunk Enough, isn't half as fun.
