There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

Is the source any clearer about this? Seems like a pretty significant happening.

English Article Source : Archive, it's been all over SNS and stuff as well, this is the best english report of it atm.
It's completely unconfirmed and it's coming out of more private channels, SK hasn't confirmed it (and won't). But the sources are pretty convincing.
Panic Buying in NK English Archive.

The South Korean "Ministry of Unification" is denying everything, promising that Corona Virus will be a good way to ensure reunification and Moon is panicking and bullshitting atm that KJU is fine and reunification will be super easy.
North Korea have produced a "letter" from KJU too, saying "hey guys alive and well" but :story: Ok.

This has got China written all over it.

All the Norks have to do is have KJU at a public event. It'll be believable, because nobody is fat enough in North Korea to be his doppelganger.

EDIT: Apparently he's sending letters to everyone's favorite Necklacer-in-Chief.

North Korea's ruling party newspaper has published a letter from Kim Jong Un amid rumors over the leader's disappearance from public life in recent days.

The newspaper reported on Tuesday that Kim sent a letter to the president of South Africa to mark the country's national holiday.

In the letter, Kim said that he believes relations between the two countries "would steadily grow stronger."

The country's media have reported similar stories three days in a row, including a letter thanking workers building a tourist resort in Wonsan.

Kim's health condition came under the spotlight last week when CNN reported he was in "grave danger"
after undergoing surgery.

But the South Korean government says nothing unusual is happening in the North, and that Kim is "alive and well."

In Washington, US President Donald Trump also dismissed speculation over Kim's condition saying, "I hope he is fine. You'll probably be hearing in the not too distant future."

The two leaders last met in June 2019 in an historic summit at the inter-Korean Demilitarized Zone.

How will this affect relations with other countries, or is this a question that is too reliant on who the next leader is?

They even had a good old fashioned ceremony yesterday to restart the East Sea railway in Gangwon.

It depends on how involved China is. Moon's spazzing out atm about reunification at any cost is really weird, since Yeo-Jong is married to the 2IC's son, it could be business as usual, minus the outreach to the US and a return to the push for reunification only if it involves $ from SK.

They even had a good old fashioned ceremony yesterday to restart the East Sea railway in Gangwon.

Progressive outlet Hankyoreh have been leaning heavily into that whole "lets join up our railway" Moon-talk too. It's important to Moon to pivot the country away from thinking of KJU's possible death, to focus on what a "great job" he's doing interconnecting them.
It's mindless.

China has for years engaged in a game of cat and mouse with Pyongyang.

Mr Xi knows North Korea holds the key to expanding China’s dominance over Asia but Mr Kim has never extended the hand of friendship.

Michael Auslin wrote for Foreign Policy today that China is poised to “make a power move” as the mystery surrounding Kim’s disappearance continues.

“This is the most dangerous moment for the three-generation Kim regime in decades,” he wrote.

“Kim’s apparent medical crisis offers Beijing the first real opportunity in decades to strengthen its hand over Pyongyang.

“The opportunity to bind North Korea more tightly to China and maintain it as a buffer state facing US allies South Korea and Japan would be a geopolitical gift to XI.”

I think people really underestimate what a huge deal this is, why it's happening right now, what the ramifications for the entire world really are and what is likely to have happened to Kim.

Whether he's alive, dead or in-between and how he came to be that way, the timing is too much.
China is putting it's boot onto the neck of a lot of countries atm - especially Vietnam, Philippines and Australia.

It doesn't matter if it's organic or planned, China will be all over North Korea and anytime there's a lack of capitulation from someone, South Korea and Japan will feel it. This has all the potential for developing into a genuine conflict region.

Everyone is being distracted by all the little powerplays that are popping up due to the Coronavirus, the campaigns against Trump, that China are moving in on NK under the cover of darkness.

Wasn't it also speculated that China was also the orchestrator, or at least a major sponsor in Bobby Mugabe's overthrow down in Zimbabwe a few years back?

Not South Africa is it? Or is it one of the smaller, shittier nations, like Angola or something?
No, I don't think it's South Africa or Angola (which, surprisingly, is larger than SA by around 25,000 km2. Angola is enormous, like most Southern African nations). If I recall correctly, they were definitely trying to gain immense influence in Zambia and Cameroon for the Belt and Road. They were attempting to do the same in Sierra Leone but were more or less told to GTFO (10 points to SL).

He's just be holed up with his harem - according to this glowing report from the New York Post / Sun

Kim Jong Un may be holed up with his 2,000-woman ‘Pleasure Squad’: report

If Kim Jong Un is holed up in his luxe seaside hideaway in the port city of Wonsan, he may have plenty of company — a harem of 2,000 sex slaves, a report said Friday.
The North Korean dictator resurrected his late grandfather’s “Pleasure Squad” of secret sex entertainers in 2015, The Sun reported.
And while the dictator’s location and the state of his health remain a mystery, some reports say he fled to a luxury resort in the port city located along the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula to avoid catching the coronavirus — and the UK paper speculates that he might have his harem with him.
“It’s within the walls of his ultra-protected palaces that his Pleasure Squad provides entertainment for high-ranking North Korean officials,” the paper reported.

:story: At people trusting North Korean State Media.

None of this undoes any of the past month of issues going on in NKorea.
