I've seen other leaks saying that she isn't dead and that it ends with her abandoning a pregnant Dina to track down Abbey for revenge. So maybe she isn't dead and they're setting up a third game where Ellie's the villain the whole way through. Still a dumb decision no matter how you slice it.
I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they are going to try and "thread the needle," following both Ellie
and Abby and making them the villains in each other's stories. (They've already failed completely at that, but I assume that's the intention.)
You know, sort of like what The Walking Dead tried and failed to do with Negan, after he brutally beat beloved characters to death in front of us but... golly gee, can't you see things from
his perspective, be the bigger person, and forgive? (Whoever said it earlier in the thread, I also get strong TWD/Negan vibes from this leaked plotline, and I bet that was an inspiration.)
I mean...MGS2 was always my favorite one so...
MGS2 is a great game. But if you think the story is great... well, let's just say I might have basically respected what Kojima did (and did clumsily) in a different series, and in a different series where he didn't go on to make 4+ sequels afterwards.
Raiden, however, is a terrible, obnoxious, unlikable character. And no, "that's the point" doesn't make him any less obnoxious or terrible of a character. And no, ruining the memory of Grey Fox later to make Raiden look cooler doesn't change that, either. Even Kojima knew that and rightfully poked fun at Raiden in MGS3.
There's some serious revisionist history going on with MGS2. Everyone loved the game itself, but the story was widely panned for good reason when it came out. Rian Johnson-ing things with "well, I certainly subverted your expectations with my social commentary, didn't I?" is a total cop-out. All the meme-able gene/meme stuff aside, it's a total narrative mess and in no way a staggering work of storytelling genius.
I say this as a huge fan of both MGS and Kojima (for the talents he
does have... solid writing isn't one of them). I respect parts of what Kojima was trying to do with the game's story, but only conceptually. In practice, it's a fascinating disaster.
