I just want to point out the existence of the Hazelwood High trilogy. It's 3 books about a group of black kids in high school. It was written in the 90s, which is probably part of why it isn't as politically charged.
So it covers themes like rape, abuse, suicide, drug abuse and drunk driving in a realistic way while also not being a goddamn wokefest. I was assigned the first book for class in 9th grade and even though I didn't find them super relatable, I'm glad I read them. It's sort of like The Hate U Give only less politically charged and I don't recall there being a lot of 'HOW DO YOU DO FELLOW KIDS?' moments.
The first one, Tears of a Tiger, is about Andy Jackson, a 17yo who is driving drunk and it results in his car crashing and his best friend being killed. The book is about his grief and depression slowly getting worse until he eventually kills himself. There's a little bit at the end about how his friends grieve and what they'd say to him if he was still alive and if they'd known he felt that way.
The second book, Forged by Fire, is about one of his friends, and the abusive home he lives in. He has to protect his sister from their abusive stepfather (who is molesting his sister) and I think it ends with their house burning down and the stepfather dying. I think this one takes place during Tears of a Tiger.
The third book is Darkness Before Dawn, and actually takes place after ToaT, and focuses on Andy's girlfriend and how she copes with his death. There is a new track coach who seems to have a particular interest in her. Long story short, he grooms her and they start dating secretly. It turns out he's a rapist. He tries to rape her, but she escapes. Someone else presses charges and he gets 30 years in prison.
