When I say that I'm thinking back to how the Japanese invasion on Twitter is what led to a lot of the pro-loli art rules. Basically because Twitter is simple to post art to and also not hosted in Japan, they get away with posting a lot of banned-in-Japan stuff on it. Because they form a shockingly large percentage of the active engagement on the platform Twitter won't budge on allowing art of minors and other rather grotesque stuff like abortion.

Pixiv has a lot of nicely-drawn art so I'll occasionally browse through. But yeah, there's some Pixiv horrors that I can't believe exist. Like a lot of torture porn for some ungodly reason, and I've seen pictures on Pixiv where I shit you not mostly-female characters (in the Digimon tag, anyway) have catheters and it was drawn out like it was supposed to be sexy. If I knew/remembered how to find them, I'd post an example of what I'm talking about, but I don't want to expose myself or anyone else to that ever again.

I mostly just stick to "semi-mainstream manga artist" Pixiv or "manga fan art I find via Reddit" Pixiv, I haven't yet been brave enough to search the tags on Pixiv.

EDIT: For the TMI rating people, I was largely referring to WataMote fan art that is even tamer than the actual manga is these days.

Well no shit, a lot of their art doesn’t have any charm to them and when Japanese artists do cal arts, they put tiny little extra details on them that makes it much better. For example, like Irukasango on twitter.

Not entirely true, they actually enforce Japanese censorship rules even on Western users. It can be hit or miss since there so much art uploaded there, but I've had English speaking friends with small accounts get messages from automoderators telling them they need to reupload some of their works with proper Japanese censorship or risk getting their account banned.
One way I've seen people get around it is upload two versions so the preview is the censored image but the uncensored image is part of the image set.

I think the big difference between Pixiv and Japanese art sites (Japanese Twitter, Pawoo, etc) vs the western art community is that there's a lot more perfectionism among Japanese artists. Japanese internet artists have a talent for making something that's really fucking weird come off as more eccentric than autistic because of the sheer amount of talent seen in their art, and that's something you don't see in as many western fetish artists (with the exception of a few). On the other hand it's a common thing for western porn artists to end up getting worse over time as they focus on the money, while Japanese porn artists might end up in the manga/anime industries.

That's also why furries have tended to worship Asian artists as of late, because while the Asian ones might end up creating an anime or landing a gig or undercharging on art, the western ones end up as minor artcows and sometimes horrorcows.

Japan's censorship laws are very distinct from Western ones. The most iconic one is the "black bar over a pixelated penis" method. It's to the point where I've seen porn artists apply that censorship method to things that aren't penises as a joke.
