Has this been posted yet?(archive) It's amazing watching journalists twist their neurons into gordian knots trying to put some sort of negative spin on death rates being lower than initially reported. Initial projections reported in the media were if every American got the virus over 3 million would die, now they're down to a million after these antibody studies. Washington Post's response? "Well the flu is still worse."

I'm not even arguing that Covid-19 isn't worse than the flu, but how far does the IFR have to drop before we decide full scale indefinite lockdowns aren't justified? Obviously there is a point because we tolerate a virus killing some people because there have been deadlier strains of the flu before and we didn't lock everything down. What level does the IFR have to drop to? 0.4? 0.2?

The lockdowns have taken on an almost religious dimension at this point. The Coronavirus is Satan and the lockdowns are Jesus and the people who don't believe in the lockdowns are heathens who will be burning in Hell. People don't believe in God anymore, they believe in "science", which means they believe in any dude in a lab coat on TV. People will announce their support for ever increasing lockdowns like they're testifying in church, and they're ratting on their neighbors like they're turning in witches.

The lockdowns will continue regardless of what the death rate is because we've shifted the goalposts from spreading the deaths out to eliminating the virus entirely by staying inside forever. No one wants to ease off, because we've convinced people that leaving your house is the equivalent of murdering people. I hope that at some point, people will get sick of it. Not the very online people insisting that we have to shut down every playground, but the people who just want to go outside and do things. And then the cops are going to have to decide whether they want to shoot some kids for playing basketball in the middle of July or if they should just go to Dunkin' Donuts instead, and then things will slowly go back to normal.

That's what I hope - that everyone quietly starts going about their business and the absolute nutjobs can jerk themselves off online about how many lives they saved by ordering Grubhub while the rest of us get on with our lives. What I worry about is things getting violent, that the cops decided that yes, they do want to use SWAT teams to break up people going on picnics. I worry about the government deciding that we all have to be tracked every hour of the day and people just going along with it because that's what the good people do. I worry that we'll never trust each other again. I'm hoping that our leaders finally realize that they can't run their states with everyone being unemployed and have to back off, because the alternative is horrifying.

I can't say who I work for out loud, but it's a well-known company. I work alongside our supply chain team to help them strategize costs for customs and foreign taxes. Let's just say most of our manufacturing business is being prepped to move elsewhere, like Taiwan and India. From what I understand, a lot of tech and other companies are following suit. Companies don't want to deal with a country who has a government that openly lies to them and affects their bottom line.

I thought about this as well, the possibility that common cold coronavirus infections might impart some immunity as well, the way cowpox infection caused a subsequent smallpox infection to be not as virulent or lethal otherwise.

Years ago I was reading about how therapies and a cure for tuberculosis were developed. Gerhard Domagk, who discovered sulfonamides (and was able to save his daughter from amputation) was awarded the Nobel in 1939 but was forced to refuse it and arrested by the Gestapo (he was eventually released). Domagk eventually went on to work on isoniazid, which is still used to treat TB today. Politics absolutely infects science and research, to the detriment of everyone involved. I imagine there are treatments being developed right now for coronavirus but after the shit storm hydroxychloroquine caused I'm sure no one's talking. What the fuck? Antibody tests have lowered the lethality to extremely low levels. Yeah it's technically higher than the flu, because it's almost impossible to go lower than that (outside of, like, the commonnfucking cold.) Good to hear. These events have made me glad I work for one of the rare software companies that wasn’t trying to enter the Chinese market, other than when our customers use the product for their Chinese offices, but we have zero physical presence there.

This morning the news stations were touting Remdesivir as a possible treatment, and I guess it's on track for FDA approval. I know it was mentioned earlier in the thread that it was showing promise, and I'm glad it is. I've said before that I support any treatments that work. But I hate that I'm so jaded that when I see the media tripping over themselves to report on this, not to mention that it's being produced by Gilead, a drug company tied to one of the scientists that did that VA study that showed hydroxycholoriquine doesn't work, that I have my doubts that it's any better than HCQ. I'm very curious what the price of the drug will be.

I haven't ridden the subway since this craziness began but I believe its true the homeless hobos are sleeping/living on trains. Any gains made by Giuliani/Bloomberg in getting them into treatment/permanent housing has been undone by De Blasio. I have a bike so I'm using that to get around.
