Harem Anime General - Discussion of harem anime (formerly Magic School Harem Animes)

And also how could we not include Kampfer? It might just be the only magical school battle harem with a gender-bending protagonist out there.

Ehhhh Kämpfer's not taking place in a magical school, though.

But in that same vein, Gonna Be the Twin-Tail!! I think counts.

Redhead chick's a dude when he's not fighting evil Super Sentai-style. At least three of the girls fawn over him (when either normal or as the chick).

Tenchi just went to a regular Japanese high school, although I really only think they show him at school very early in the series, at least as far as the main OVA continuity is concerned. Especially considering Ryoko accidentally blew up the school in the first episode.

The only alternate universe series made in the 20th century that had all that many school episodes were Shin Tenchi Muyo/Tenchi in Tokyo and Pretty Sammy TV/Magical Project S
after that was that one like Sasami Magic Club or something? Sasami is a normal high school girl until magic happens and then she's in the magic club taught by Washu or something
I remember it being amazingly stupid to the point it was entertaining, like Teacher Mihoshi showed up to school in pantyhose and a top but forgot her skirt

I love how there are enough anime that follow this exact plot for it to be a subcategory of anime in and of itself.

Harem anime in general tend to be really formulaic in nature. Which kinda makes sense, it isn't like people are watching them for deep plots.

Some other common formulas are the "guy has supernatural girl(s) forced into his home" story, or the "guy has to run a women's dorm/apartment complex/gym/resort" story, both of which have similarly stupid numbers of series associated with them.

I know it exists but I never got around to watching it. That's half the reason I limited it to "20th century" as I really haven't watched much of any 21st century Tenchi Muyo due to lack of Kiyone Makibi and also waning interest in general.

I caught an ep or two, had a chuckle, and wandered off. I think they did two 13ep-ish series, not sure if it was Season 2 or yet another reboot.
For the eight billion Tenchi reboots/spinoffs and the multidimensional shit of the original setting I wonder if they've ever said "no they're all really related because dimension shit".

oh if we're not literally talking magic then Urusei Yatsura is worth mentioning since it's actually funny

I know it's generally considered a "harem" anime, but I've never really felt like it was. Ataru's just a perv that wishes he was in a harem. Lum's the only one who's actually interested in him, and she's pissed off about him hitting on every girl in the universe.

You are right that it's actually funny, though.

it was a subversion of the cliches of the genre before there was a genre to have cliches for
also more conventional but similarly aged Kimagure Orange Road, only two girls and there's ESPer wackiness rather than "magic" because lol it's the 80s, but it also has the payoff in the movie when he actually chooses one and the other one is crushed (and understandably so) and it stops being a comedy in any way, shape, or form

Right, it was the whole "normal school with secret stuff going on in the background" setting. Good catch, I must have watched it like 10 years ago now.

Ranma 1/2 https://myanimelist.net/anime/210/Ranma_½ done the gender-bending protagonist first and over a decade earlier. While the series isn't a magical school per say but with all of the weird crap going on it is close enough.

It doesn't quite fit the "magical school harem" archetype though, since there are significant male characters and the other characters actually have stuff going on that doesn't revolve around the MC.

If you think about it, Ouran High School is kind of like a magic school if you replaced actual magic with infinite money to do seemingly impossible things like recreate a huge section of Venice, canals included, in the school auditorium, and certainly there's a reverse harem aspect to that show.

There was this one magical school harem anime where magic worked on the rules of “people have a stock number of magic they can cast, and if you use all of them, you essentially Thanos yourself”. It wasn’t a problem for most people because they had like hundreds of thousands of uses, but the main character only had like 9 spells tops, so he was essentially the butt monkey of the school. Except said 9 magic uses were also infinitely times more powerful and potent than any other magic, to the point that he could warp the rules of nature/space/time with just one. The majority of the harem was because magical families wanted his baby juice so the kids would have lots of magic but more powerful.

It was a run of the mill comedy harem anime though, so they didn’t have any cool anime battles or anything.

Honestly am not a fan of the harem genre in general, some of it irritates me, but I just have to say Tenchi Muyou is some good fun. Shame Love Hina had to be stupid popular to copy the archetypes from.

I've been watching The Quintessential Quintuplets. It's surprisingly good. It focuses on one guy who gets a job as a tutor for five rich quintuplets. He has to build relationships with each of them in order to get them to study.

I would definitely recommend it.
Best girl (read:my favorite girl) didn't win so the author is a hack and this series is garbage.
