Harem Anime General - Discussion of harem anime (formerly Magic School Harem Animes)

Harem Anime, especially eroge adaptations were pretty much today's isekai when I got into anime. There was 3-4 of them every season. No complaints from me.

The genre sure has dried up. The last ones we had that were pretty good recently was BokuBen (Bokutachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai AKA We Never Learn) and 5hanayome (Gotōbun no Hanayome AKA The Quintesential Quintuplets)

Both about a guy who ends up having to tutor a group of girl, in the case of BokeBen, the more popular girls of the school who are all genius in their respective fields but want a career in something else. Like the literature girl who wants to become an astronaut.

For 5hanayome it's a group of quintuplet sisters, but of course they all have their own personality and look to them.

I recommend both

Edit: Oh and I just noticed somebody mentioned it before. Well then there's two vote for it!

Hahaha...no
5tuben ends on an unsatisfying pseudo harem ending and bokuben became an absolute trainwreck in terms of handling its "ending"

Battle harems are a dying breed. Kind of sad, in that. Are there any even out this season that aren't just isekai?

And as for isekai, it probably won't last that much longer, at least in its current form. It'll be probably usurped by either villianess isekais or the old men isekais, at least for a couple of years.

And then it'll all be korean shit until we die.

oh if we're not literally talking magic then Urusei Yatsura is worth mentioning since it's actually funny
Tbh you could consider it partly magical. had some OVAs that leaned toward magical at least. For example Urusei Yatsura:Inaba the Dream Maker.

Harem would be hard to call it since he only "dated" 4 people and was liked/loved by said 4; lum, miyake, nozomi and elle. Independently of course so it was a average love li-well almost average love life. 2 being aliens and one spirit of course.

"Unsatisfying pseudo harem ending"
Literally every fucking series has those. At one point you kinda have to get used to it.

The only genre where a male character doesn't have to work for pussy.
Or, at least, not to the extent other in other genres. Then again, a lot of Shonen anime has the protagonist focusing on his own thing, rather than corporeal relationships.

I'm a Naruto kid(that is, started watching anime, because of Naruto), so the first harem anime I discovered was Zero no Tsukamina, which I find to be slightly enjoyable, since the main guy has some backbone.
Shit like Rosario+Vampire is unwatchable to me now.

I really like Zero no Tsukaima, broke my heart when I found out that author passed away. I was reading the light novels too.

I was very into it when I was younger, there's definitely some good storytelling in it for a high-fantasy & harem franchise.

This genre is unironically my favorite anime genre along with romcom anime in general. It is kinda sad to see harems have mostly died off.

I saw some discussion of Zero no Tsukaima which is one of the first non-Pokemon/DBZ anime that I watched so it has special place in my heart. I was pretty sad when I heard the author passed away. Spoiler for the end of the last season: I always wanted an additional OVA of Louise and Saito exploring Japan and meeting his parents. Imagine your son being gone for a year and coming back home with a Wife

Most recently I watched BokuBen and 5hanayome, I liked them both and it's entry into what seems to be the emerging genre of "Poor Kid tutors girls who fall in love with him"/ "Poor Kid MC works hard to be with rich people" that has been emerging as of late. While both are good and I enjoyed them, they don't fell quite the same as older shows.

I recently watched Monster Musume for the first time which I liked more than I thought I would, though if they don't do the harem ending it is clear to me who is going to end up with him in the end.

High School DxD is a massive guilty pleasure for me and I am 100% invested in the actual plot and relations between the 3 main factions.

I have seen so many of these types of show it is hard to pick just one favorite so I will just pick one that stands out in my mind which hasn't been mentioned.

Hand Maid May it is harem show that came out in the Summer of 2000 and it shows it's age.the plot is this guy Kazuya is an electrical engineering student who likes computers and has been making this octopus robot with some artificial intelligence in his free time. One day he gets this CD-ROM from a childhood friend and self declared rival (his friend declares it not the MC) Kotaro Nanbara (who can be very annoying) which contains a computer virus. This virus asks him for his personal info which he happily puts in and immediately a hand sized cyberdoll from Cyberdyne co named May who is dressed as a maid (and is charged via a USB attached somewhere to her lower half. she can eat and drink as well as have sex [yes they mentioned that] so maybe it is like a tail) . Kazuya being a poor college student can't actually pay for her so over the next few episodes (until around episode 6 or 7) deals with them trying to not get her repossessed.

At the start of the series the land lady's daughter is already in love with him. May fall in love with him as well as two (maybe three that last one is kinda unlear since she kinda has thing with Kotaro Nanbara) of the Cyberdolls the company sends to repo May. One a little girl (I thin she is supposed to be 7) and the other a blue haired science girl.

It is kinda like is Chobits was a Harem and didn't have the whole serious romance plot.

It is on both KissAnime and WatchCartoonOnline and has been Dubbed.

The one harem series I have never watched in any way (outside of Anime Abandon reviews which don't count) is Tenchi Muyou.

sadly, I've seen most of the most popular harem anime on kissanime. most of the lesser-known stuff is garbage.

I like the harem genre, no it's not the deepest but it's good, clean fun.

Most recently I've been enjoying the manga Yuuna and The Haunted Hot Springs, which is a lot of sexy fun.
I just binged it today. it was good.

One of the first anime/manga I ever got into was Love Hina and I thought it was amazing (Kitsune best girl).

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless is on the border of being in harem territory.

That's even though the most enthusiastic member of his "harem", Miyano, is a lesbian (who nevertheless greatly admires Tanaka for his laid-back attitude and wants to be his apprentice, possibly not realizing that Tanaka's "attitude" is a result of a chronic lack of energy and physical weakness that he should probably seek medical attention for).

That's also even though Tanaka seems to be perfectly okay with the idea of him one day marrying Ohta, a fellow male, since Ohta is the one who does all the heavy lifting for him and also who, quite often, does the not-so-heavy lifting of Tanaka himself on Ohta's back.
