The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

As much as I hate it when video games do this, it’s better than having your previous protag die like a bitch on the ground. Yes I‘m salty. And I‘m salty too that Tommy dies alongside Joel for no reason.
Hypothesis: Druckman killing off Joel & Tommy and replacing Ellie as the protagonist for TLOU with Abby is his way of spitting in Amy Hennig's face when she's not there to do anything about it and the entire direction he took it in was entirely out of spite for her.

I also just realized that "Abby" is a pun name, because she's ripped like a brick shit house.

I just had an idea:

TLoU2 follows the story of Abby, a tomboy with no friends but her parents, her dad specifically. Game is told from Abby's perspective, doing tasks for her organisation, missions, salvage operations etc. and sometimes tells flashbacks of her time with dad but with no mention of him being a doctor or killed by Joel. Other flashbacks tell the time she became a soldier after her parents' death when she had no other options, how she got muscular and even less popular with boys, how she learned to cope with killing people... Maybe put a mission in the middle where she saves her pet Asian from kidnapping. Maybe put a theme that the Asian kid feels frustrated at serving as Abby's emotional crutch 'cause she has no other friends. Maybe let Abby show some heroics. Maybe give her a hobby or make her an animal lover so she doesn't feel look like such a stereotype. Abby spends most of the time killing zombies not people because that's what a zombie apocalypse is fucking about.

At some point Abby learns she's immune to cordyceps. For now, she just shrugs and is happy she got something good from life.

In the second half, Abby gets intel about her dad's murderers and story is now about pursuing them. Joel dies or gets killed offscreen BUT NOT BY ABBY FFS. Abby kills/tortures lots of people to get at the murderer and is frustrated she couldn't get Joel, so she goes for his relatives to avoid emotional pain from just letting it go. The game and Abby don't know it's Ellie until the final face-punching confrontation from the leaks. Ellie persuades Abby from killing her friend Scrooge McDyke by saying she doesn't want to lose her family again. Abby swallows tears while preparing to skin NotJoel, says fuck it and leaves them. Abby thinks about the past and concludes Ellie was meant to be killed by her dad for the cure.

Asian kid asks Abby what now, she hugs him saying "Why it wasn't me?" - couch psychologists have fun interpreting whenether she meant getting killed instead of her dad or getting selected as a test subject instead of Ellie. Cut to Ellie leaving Magicka DeSmell to kill Abby for teh revengeance. Game ends.

It's still a shit on people who liked the first game but I think it follows the themes. Joel killed lots of people to "avenge" his daughter and to keep having a replacement family. Abby kills lots of people to avenge her father and to keep having a replacement family (give that Asian freak a purpose to the story, OK?). Like in the first game, nothing gets resolved, there's lots of pain and death and all we learn is that murdering shit after the apocalypse instead of building civilisation back makes more problems than it solves.
Nah, its easy to make a game about revenge is bad, and you should feel bad. Its just with the Abby leaks, its hard to symphatize with her, because she is connected to the surgeon in LOU, which Joel killed. and for most people who played LOU1, Joel did nothing wrong. So, with Abby killing Joel, its hard to symphatize with her because there's nothing to symphatize with.

I'll try my best to do some script doctoring to make it easier to symphatize with Abby
1.make abby a cute grill like elly. make her have a younger sibling to take care of. have their parents died from zombies, final words to abby is to take care of younger sibling
2. abby and the younger sibling trek across america to get to a fireflies safeplace.
3. along the way, the younger sibling gets infected. abby ties up and gag the younger sibling and carry on her back, to the fireflies hideout in hopes of the cure she heard that the fireflies were developing from other scavengers she meets along the way.
4. abby gets to the fireflies hideout but Joel murderized everyone. no hope for a cure.
5. abby then has to sobbingly old yeller her younger sibling. in tears she swears revenge on the guy that basically denied her the cure for her younger sibling.
6. blah blah blah, events happen, abby got a par 3 with joel. ellie swears revenge on abby
7. blah blah blah, events happen, elly and abby gets a final showdown
8. elly needs to let go of her lust for revenge, because cycle of revenge is bad, abby needs to let go of her younger sibling and live for herself
9. ending
10. 10/10 across the board, VGA video game story of the year award, blah blah blah

see. that wasn't so hard.

I believe it. He's a greasy, spiteful little cunt.

I'll just repeat this for the benefit of everyone in nice big caps because it keeps getting repeated:

Amy Henning had zero input on The Last of Us

Zero

Nada

Nothing.

She was working mostly on Uncharted 3 at the time of TLOU's development and had nothing to do with TLOU.

What we're seeing is what happens when even people at the top steadily get infested by this ruinous ideology as Drekman was the creative director and lead writer (in fact only writer according to the credits) of LTOU part 1.

What we're seeing is 7 years on in which he's become high off of his own farts and everyone telling him how great he is because he allowed some adlibbing in the first game which fleshed out what was otherwise a bare bones basic zombie apocalypse. A lot of the banter and other dialogue in LTOU was done by Baker and Johnson and Drekmann being new to this "in charge schtick" decided to let them do it instead of telling them to do things to his script.

The result was near lightning in a bottle of moments that stick with people.

What we're seeing in the part 2 is a combination of him being spread too thin (He's now the VP of ND) as well as clearly being awful upper management to the point people trained in gameplay making refuse to work for them.

Add into that a story he's probably phoning in and just throwing whatever shit he felt at a keyboard and resulting in nobody being able to tell him how fucking stupid he is because he's in charge.

Kind of like how Ford would stand up to Lucas during the filming of the original star wars trilogy because some of his writing was absolutely fucking awful and a yawn fest as seen in the prequels.

Everybody knows that Half Life 2 is the real Citizen Kane of vidya, anyway.

Considering that this very same character shot her through the abdomen with an arrow, it's not likely that either she nor the baby survives.
I'm sure they'll both end up fine with no real explanation how they could survive such brutality after a timeskip.

It’s gonna be the same situation as TROS. Sure that movie didn’t technically bomb and still edged over $1B, but looking at the raw numbers misses the point that it’s part of arguably the biggest franchise in the West, and that the sequel trilogy has been on a MASSIVE steady box office decline after TFA.
Pretty much. Said this way back when the thread was starting to explode but if you really want to see the actual staying power of this game just wait and see how cheap it is a few months after release. It's a double edged sword for devs, if normies don't like it they will happily dump their copies off at gamestop or wherever (increasing the availability of cheaper options for new buyers) while also spreading bad word of mouth that'll reduce the tail a game normally has.

Happens all the time, just look at Ubisoft's big new releases from 2019. Every single one of them is already in the bargain bin at stores and you can find used copies for around $15 without much effort.

I wouldn't even be able to name a single Ubishaft game from that year apart from AssCreed Odyssey? Or was that from 2018. It all passes me by really because all their games are totally uninteresting, microtransaction-riddled messes.

The first few weeks or so tend to be a game's best selling period, but certain games have long "legs" that carry them into being evergreen titles that sell for years after their initial launch.
The attitude among many AAA publishers has varied over the years, but the core remains the same. Single player games are disposable because most people will play through the game once and then trade it in for store credit.

Most Xbox 360 games had tacked on multiplayer due to the often repeated lie that multiplayer makes games evergreen, but in the UK most games were dead online after only a couple of weeks. In the US that tail might last longer, but nobody was playing random movie tie ins like Tron 2.0 months after release. This is why anti-used game features were pushed heavily at the start of this generation only for console makers to drop it at the last second.

Third, companies are fucking huge, and very often, have departments that are completely seperate from one another. It's not uncommon for departments to cook the books against one another and pretend everything is fine to the point of lying to the investors, when it suits them.
Third and a half, when a department fucks up so monumentally that they can't deny it, they point the finger. Blaming any outside force. GamerGate, trolls, bigots, not diverse enough, YouTubers, the release date, anything they can to avoid being shown the door.

This is why I think ND will get another chance. Bioware had multiple fuck ups in a row and still haven't been thrown in EA mass grave alongside Bullfrog, Westwood, and Pandemic. Naughty Dog are going to blame the leaks and COVID, and Sony will let them skate on by to fuck up another game.

If you think that's bad just wait until the box art for the inevitable remastered version has the quote "The Legacy of Kain of gaming" on it.

Yeah that was 2018 actually lol, no new AC last year. Their big new 2019 games were Far Cry New Dawn, Division 2, and Breakpoint. All of them under performed/bombed according to Ubisoft themselves which is what led to all of their upcoming games being delayed by a year.

Breakpoint is the most interesting one as the game is only around 6 months old now but it's already in bargain bins, that game sank fast. If you see TLOU2 dropping like that you'll know it's really bad. Even though I think the reception to TLOU2 is going to be bad I am not sure we'll see Breakpoint levels of failure here.

Different companies tolerant different levels of failure. The only reason EA hasn't shut down Bioware yet is probably to keep Anthem running. Sony ain't afraid to shank studios that don't live up to expectations. Ask Zipper Interactive, Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge, and Psygnosis. Hell, you could ask Ready at Dawn, the company that developed The Order: 1886. Sony essentially cut them off after that game under performed.

Yet people replay single player games all the time. However you have to work to add replay value. That can either be in the way Witcher 3 did it by having multiple types of character build and multiple endings and paths. Baldur's Gate did this as well (and also by being really moddable although many of the mods are horribly autistic, creepy, or both.) VTMB had multiple ways to solve each quest. Or by making proper building or strategy games. People still play Total Warhammer II even though that came out three years ago originally (but also because there's a regular schedule of updates and expansions for it.) People still play Alpha Centauri and that came out 21 years ago. Even Cities Skylines, which felt like a pale imitation of the classic SimCity games it was aiming at and suffers with excessively autistic traffic simulation mechanics, still gets updates and has devoted players and modders.

Hell, even classic and classic style shooters have replay value. But "cinematic" games like Last of Us and suchlike don't. This has been a problem since the very birth of the cinematic action adventure in the 16 bit era. Another World was an excellent game, but had very little replay value and in the pre-internet era tried to pad out its runtime by being stupidly difficult (one bit that springs to mind is the bit with the falling rocks, and another later on in the flooded caverns where you need to execute a pixel-perfect climb out of the water because the second pixel from the edge is a mouth-creature that will munch you.)

More damage control from Troy Baker. Funnily enough, he only mentions screenshots, not the actual video that was leaked

I don't know much about Troy Baker except he's the voice actor for Joel and that's it - but it feels like he lives vicariously through Joel or something going by his last Twitter rant of I AM JOEL.

No, you're fucking not, Troy. Joel was a fucking chad who took out an entire base of bastards that were going to dissect a 14 year old. You're acting like a limp wristed pussy who obviously cares more about your paycheck than what made TLOU so appealing to people and would rather play dead than fight for that. And to talk down to fans like this is such a shitty thing to do.

Mark Hamill is also an apparent Trump hating leftist, but even HE was disgusted with what Rian Johnson did to his character. He took every passive aggressive shot at the films because even he knew they were an insult to everything Star Wars was.

I don't agree with his politics - he bitched at Ivana Trump for posting a picture of her kids wearing Star War costumes for God's sake and that was a pretty pathetic display. But I can respect the fact that he obviously saw the bullshit writing in Star Wars for what it was and at least TRIED to fight on behalf of the character and the fans.

I'm not sure what they were expecting.

I know Jak and Daxter is probably gonna go wokeshit but as fucked up as it is to say, at least it's kind of expected at this point.
My understanding of reading through constant vague legal bullshit that you need a degree in to understand(and that i don't have), is that Sony can determine who gets to develop what when it comes to Jak and Daxter and possibly Uncharted. They could ask insomniac to make the game and it would be fine.

At this point I would trust Guerrilla Games or Insomniac because at least they still make actual games. And the small amount of information that they've given with the Horizon sequels thus far makes it seem like they're more focused on elaborating on gameplay elements and are not focused on primarily the story.
