Harem Anime General - Discussion of harem anime (formerly Magic School Harem Animes)

Arnold was getting all the pussy on that show, I would say it counts as a harem.

Too bad Arnold dies:

"Unsatisfying pseudo harem ending"
Literally every fucking series has those. At one point you kinda have to get used to it.

UGH. I hate this fucking cliche so goddamn much. Nobody ends up with anybody and its just blushing and missed social cues and then boom, anime over. Fucking hell. I don't mind harem anime but SOMEBODY FUCK OR KISS SOMEBODY PLEASE. STOP WITH THE BLUSHING AND 12 or 24 episodes of teasing. Christ on a cross.

Recently the 'harem' I've seen done satisfying is Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest. Because he's only interested in one girl and one girl alone even though the others want him. Its kind of not really a harem though, because the MC doesn't give a fuck about anyone else. There's no silly blushing or pussyfooting around it. He likes one girl and one girl only. And it occurs early in the series so there's at least some development between them. Not like the last 1 or 2 episodes.

I'd kill for anime to ditch this shit and just get people in relationships early to see how they play out. 12 episodes isn't a lot and there's no guarantee for another season. Just fucking do it.

You're saying you watch pirated anime?!‽‽
MASAKA!!!!!!!!

NANI?!

The pseudo harem ending can suck, but I’m not too big a fan of the actual logical ending of “picks a girl and that’s it” either, mainly because I almost never like the “main girl” as much as I like the others.

Plus those rejection scenes can be brutal as fuck.

This genre is unironically my favorite anime genre along with romcom anime in general. It is kinda sad to see harems have mostly died off.

I saw some discussion of Zero no Tsukaima which is one of the first non-Pokemon/DBZ anime that I watched so it has special place in my heart. I was pretty sad when I heard the author passed away. Spoiler for the end of the last season: I always wanted an additional OVA of Louise and Saito exploring Japan and meeting his parents. Imagine your son being gone for a year and coming back home with a Wife

Most recently I watched BokuBen and 5hanayome, I liked them both and it's entry into what seems to be the emerging genre of "Poor Kid tutors girls who fall in love with him"/ "Poor Kid MC works hard to be with rich people" that has been emerging as of late. While both are good and I enjoyed them, they don't fell quite the same as older shows.

I recently watched Monster Musume for the first time which I liked more than I thought I would, though if they don't do the harem ending it is clear to me who is going to end up with him in the end.

High School DxD is a massive guilty pleasure for me and I am 100% invested in the actual plot and relations between the 3 main factions.

I have seen so many of these types of show it is hard to pick just one favorite so I will just pick one that stands out in my mind which hasn't been mentioned.

Hand Maid May it is harem show that came out in the Summer of 2000 and it shows it's age.the plot is this guy Kazuya is an electrical engineering student who likes computers and has been making this octopus robot with some artificial intelligence in his free time. One day he gets this CD-ROM from a childhood friend and self declared rival (his friend declares it not the MC) Kotaro Nanbara (who can be very annoying) which contains a computer virus. This virus asks him for his personal info which he happily puts in and immediately a hand sized cyberdoll from Cyberdyne co named May who is dressed as a maid (and is charged via a USB attached somewhere to her lower half. she can eat and drink as well as have sex [yes they mentioned that] so maybe it is like a tail) . Kazuya being a poor college student can't actually pay for her so over the next few episodes (until around episode 6 or 7) deals with them trying to not get her repossessed.

At the start of the series the land lady's daughter is already in love with him. May fall in love with him as well as two (maybe three that last one is kinda unlear since she kinda has thing with Kotaro Nanbara) of the Cyberdolls the company sends to repo May. One a little girl (I thin she is supposed to be 7) and the other a blue haired science girl.

It is kinda like is Chobits was a Harem and didn't have the whole serious romance plot.

It is on both KissAnime and WatchCartoonOnline and has been Dubbed.

The one harem series I have never watched in any way (outside of Anime Abandon reviews which don't count) is Tenchi Muyou.

Oh man, Hand Maid Mei. That takes me back.

And I can't believe you haven't watch Tenchi Muyo in any way. It's such a seminal Harem series. If you want more slapsticky, stick to Mondo Tenchi Muyo. The OVA series is more serious and really degenerate into expositions and lore dumps.

A fan of Harem type needs to do Tenchi. It's like not having seen Ranma or Love Hina.

Saw some School Rumble fanart earlier and that reminded me of 5hanayome. An other series that was awesome most of the way through and had a shitty ending and everybody seem to hate it now.

What about the good times? What about the laughs we've had?
It's like everybody treat a manga like a EX that dumped them and can't remember the good times they had together.

Yakumo was best girl!

Bad endings can leave a really sour taste in people’s mouths and ruin the overall product for people, as you now know it’ll all lead to crap.

See HIMYM.

What about if the animation studio forces a terrible anime-original ending on to an adaptation of a manga that was still ongoing when they made it?

See KumaMiko: Girl Meets Bear where the anime ending had a traumatized and mind-broken Machi even though nothing of the sort happened in the manga. I still think the preceding episodes were fun stories of a village full of off-kilter people some of whom may have been driven mad by delusions created by vengeful mountain gods.

Yeah, I’ve heard people really disliked the sudden and weirdly dark ending of that anime. Can completely imagine understand why too

Tenchi Muyo if you're old enough to remember toonami

I’ve never watched any other harem anime, and I am not schooled in these things, but I was obsessed with Tenchi growing up. Tenchi is an average joe who just happens to be some kind of “chosen one” who the women, who have stronger personalities and character motivations, essentially use for their own purposes. Is this the usual way of harem anime? Was Tenchi supposed to be kind of a different/subverted take on harem anime? I don’t have the weeb perspective to know.

My memory of the genre ends there too, but it's certainly a recurring trope in a million samey releases that all seem to blend together in retrospect.

Is Love Hina a harem anime? I only know that one from the theme song, which I only know from the JamezBond animutation.

There’s usually at least one “only using him for her own ends but ends up actually falling in love with him” girls in anime. Is typically either the rich heiress or the extreme tsundere girl as well.

Sometimes, it makes it the only reason to watch a show.

See School Days.
Nice boat.

In most harem series, they try to make the MC as bland and generic as possible, since he's supposed to be a self-insert for the viewer (yes, it's as pathetic as it sounds, but the ones that get way into it spend a lot of money on merch, so...). He might have an interesting back-story, but his actual actions in the story don't tend to reflect that. They're almost always the ones have things done to them, rather than the one doing them.

They've slowly started to move away from that sort of thing; the women still are at the forefront, so they're almost always more interesting characters than the main, but at least the MC has some kind of identifiable personality trait beyond "conscious".

Incidentally, this is largely true of reverse-harems, as well. Much like the guy in a harem series, the girl is basically a prop for the guys in the story to engage with.

Hahaha...no
5tuben ends on an unsatisfying pseudo harem ending and bokuben became an absolute trainwreck in terms of handling its "ending"
yes, because having a conclusive ending when the manga is still running and got a second season definitely is the way to go. and bokuben's ending is fine considering the highschool-arc is over at that point with everyone going to a different university. go read the manga, it apparently has the "ending" you're looking for.

what's next, complaining about all the gay shit in yaoi?

"Unsatisfying pseudo harem ending"

anyone watching harem anime for a conclusion is doing it wrong.

- most of the time the source material is still going, the anime having a definitive ending when the story isn't over yet or worse where it doesn't make sense would be stupid. and deviating from the source material, even when it works out, can rub some fans the wrong way (which is the case not just for harem anime).
- shutting the door on a potential second or third season right from the start would be even more stupid when the anime proves to be more popular than anyone expected.
- part of the appeal is everyone having their own headcanon and best girl discussions (even if it's just the weeb version of #teamedward vs #teamjacob), outright going "lol nope XD" is not only poor form it's not how you retain fans. and considering the lengths some fans go it's probably also the saner and safer option, see idol otakus.
- most of them are lighthearted comedy, no one wants to see the aftermath of rejection and heartbreak, especially if it happens to your waifu (see @SteelPlatedHeart's post). not saying you can't do it, but that's usually not what the story is about (and more importantly what people watch it for) so it gets conveniently glossed over. if you want your eXpEcTaTiOn SuBvErTed go with western shit.

anyway, here's some good stuff you probably gonna enjoy as well:

Hensuki: Are You Willing to Fall in Love with a Pervert, as Long as She's a Cutie? (Kawaikereba Hentai demo Suki ni Natte Kuremasuka?)
I would post the premise here, but it's a bit more fun figuring it out along the way. enjoyed it more than I expected all the way through till the very last minute, and without going into spoiler territory was definitely worth it (and no, it's not a loli harem, even if the cover suggests it).

it will also give you a whole new perspective on @Yotsubaaa's avatar 👌

220px-Saenai_Heroine_no_Sodatekata(Saekano),_cover.jpg

Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend (Saenai Hiroin no Sodatekata)
goes deep into weeb territory, however the mc is one of us, so it's even better. like hensuki it's best going in blind. my biggest criticism would be the artists constantly going back and forth between flesh- and moefang, decide on one ffs!

an older one I haven't finished yet but goes all out (and even has based popura's seiyuu)

220px-Haiyorenyarukosanln.jpg

Nyaruko: Crawling with Love (Haiyore! Nyaruko-san)
worth watching for the premise alone, and as meta as it is I want to believe they imply lovecraft was secretly a weeb:
The story of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san centers around Nyaruko, a formless Lovecraftian deity of chaos (Nyarlathotep) who can take on the shape of a seemingly cute silver-haired girl.

looking those up I also noticed bokuben had a new ova come out with the manga last month, time for more best girl rizu

What I liked especially about Saekano is how the girls were pretty atypical of the the usual harem type tropes. Especially the main girl.

Nyaruko was a complete larf.

Can't say I'm familiar with the first one. I've been behind of manga so that could be why.

I'd like to bring up, one that isn't quite a harem type, but it reminds me a lot of Love Hina because it's set in a villa like Hinata-sou.

Maho.PNG

Mahoraba: Heartful Days~

One of the debut role for Satomi Arai (Probably now best known as Index's obsessive teleporting lesbian, Kuroko) where she really showed the range of her voice but saying more would be a spoiler.

Really fun series about an art student having to live in a villa filled with eccentric people and his relationship with the landlord who has a secret he's about to discover.

Also features the voice of Love Hina's main heroine Naru; Yui Horie.

Fans of Hayate the Combat Butler will find the protagonist very reminiscent of Hayate, sharing the same voice, Ryouko Shiraishi and knowing that Hata-sensei wanted her to voice Hayate, I can't help but think Hayate was in part inspired by Shiratori-san.

I'm enjoying Hamefura/My next life as a villainess this season. I'm not into male lead harems but even with female lead harems I don't always watch them cause it annoys me how often the MC has the personality of cardboard (Such as in Uta no prince sama. Honestly, after the first few seasons she may as well not be there.) but Katarina is a funny dork who actively tries to avoid her own doom and takes control of her situation. Though, on the romance aspect it does follow the harem cliche of the MC being very dense cause she genuinely has no clue that the 3 guys and 2 women who orbit her are aggressively vying for her affection.

Also, Akatsuki no Yona is awesome and I wish they'd make more seasons.
