I added that "and vice versa" bit to cover my ass because I remember reading an article years ago, before this huge push for "everything is transgender" hit the mainstream, talking about one of those obscure tiny tribal-level Central African cultures where a minority of women who did male-associated activities weren't classed as "women" anymore. Nothing about dysphoria or anything like that, of course, completely social stuff related to traditional gender roles and their position in the social hierarchy. I can't find it anymore so either the article was discredited, or the websites publishing it all folded since. I'll give it 75-25 odds.
All that aside, your example shows how little the "NATIVE CULTURE ALWAYS HAD TRANSGENDER RIGHTS, Y'ALL" crowd actually care to research their claims. Or weigh them against their own ideology, for that matter. The specific brand of aggressively feminist "progressive" politics they embrace would excoriate a system like the Bugis if it hadn't been brown people doing it, because it's "men taking over femininity in order to gain power". TERFs in particular would be frothing at the mouth at it. Patriarchy! Patriarchy everywhere!
