Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

A federal ID is bad because anything required of you by the gubmint for an action can easily be taken away by denying you that thing <insert voter ID issue here>
We already have a federal ID, its called a passport. It's required if you want to travel out of the country (except for some places for which we have an agreement but that's fairly recent). Just make passports easier (and cheaper) to get.

And now I present New York City's plan to devolve into the Stasi dystopia of 1980s East Germany.:

Forced Quarantine Is Possible Under Contact Tracing Program Says Unelected NYC Sturmbannführer Bureaucrat
“We have not ruled out using any of the powers of DOHMH. Of course, they will be issued by DOHMH by, as a commissioner order; it would not be by [Health and Hospitals]," said Katz at the Friday hearing. "Our hope is not to have to use them."

Katz, who served as director and health officer of the San Francisco Department of Health for 13 years, said he was confronted with this type of issue with patients suffering from multi drug-resistant tuberculosis. There, patients were placed in mandatory self-isolation.

This putz is comparing the Wu Flu to MDR Tuberculosis, a disease they have a piss poor record of containing, because its endemic to this city; a disease so virulent and contagious that can kill and maim, unlike the Wu Flu, which has killed mostly the elderly, infirm and sick, because the mayor encouraged social contact and the governor forced virus infected patients back into nursing homes that were unprepared and ill equipped to accept them.

There is also the growing body of evidence that many patients put on ventilators were improperly diagnosed, monitored and the ventilators themselves were improperly used because while you can have thousands of ventilators you also need thousands trained and certified to use them (something Cuomo failed to understand) that led to unnecessary deaths. As well as stories of visibly ill and distressed patients discharged who sere sent home, where they either died or passed on after an ambulance rushed them to a hospital again where they passed on,

I can see the terrified UES/UWS liberal neurotics going along with this but everyone else is going to tell this imbecile where he can stick his isolation plan. The cops won't like it because the people that will resist are more likely to be black/hispanic, thus subjecting them to more accusations of racism for enforcing the orders of our befuddled autocrats. The current Dept of Health & Mental Hygiene Commissioner is under fire so surely she will at least threaten stir up the good old racism pot since this program is technically supposed to run under her direction.

This will lead to people refusing to get tested because who wants to be marked and tagged for forced isolation? No one, that's who. Since the ACLU is busy arguing for kangaroo courts in universities, I wonder who will have the balls to challenge this train wreck of a mayor.

Nah, I don't give a shit about them, I'm more important.
The chillun! Was the reason given to create gun-free zones, the most retarded massacre-prevention law in all of human history. In true case is the Wuhan Lung AIDS though, it’s particularly wrong since it is very difficult to infect children.

I read that rich people in NYC are fleeing the state in droves. The same thing is going to happen to California before all is said and done, too.

Escape From New York story arc when?

I think the article would have better if it had pointed out that other countries are re-opening their schools, but it's encouraging to see someone pointing out, at NPR of all places, that isolating children for months on end is a bad thing.

People aren't taking their kids to get vaccinated because they're scared of leaving the house. I don't understand how people don't understand that kids are largely unaffected by Coronavirus, but they can die as a result of the diseases we vaccinate for. I genuinely don't get how our nation's governors are ordering playgrounds wrapped up in police tape ostensibly to keep children safe, but they're not sounding off about this 24/7.

Oh, look: Another "unintended consequence" that I've been trying to warn people about for over a month now (and people I know IRL call me paranoid-- MKAY).

Can't wait for polio to make a comeback. Getting the coof is worse than living in an iron lung, I guess!

One word: equity.

Anyway, enough off topic shitposting...

A local reporter from NY is upset that the plebs are telling him that he’s bad at his job. An alarming level of anger. *sigh*

Trump has retweeted the video twice now, which gets the reporter‘s dick extra hard.

This is seriously the equivalent to a bully crying "What's your problem?!" when the person he/she has been bullying finally stands up for themself. Happens every time with bullies!

Don't want regular joes calling you out on your shit? Then maybe don't wrongfully, innacurately, and baselessly demonize them, ya shitbird!

It's as if people don't take it kindly when they're called horrible people for voting for a certain candidate ... Or, these days, being called horrible people for wanting their income back so they can eat.

They already had to back off from having the police enforce mask wearing after a video got out of the police arresting a woman with a baby for wearing a mask improperly. I'm not sure how they're going to get people to go along with this considering half the city already hates the government for selectively enforcing quarantine rules. The orthodox Jews are almost at the point of flipping police cars over; what's going to happen when the cops roll up with a paddy wagon to throw a bunch of them in the back because they may have been exposed to the virus?

"The hires have been made in collaboration with community-based organizations with a caveat of hiring tracers whose ethnicity reflects the majority demographics of low-income neighborhoods they’ll be assigned to carry out the work " - so are they going to hire Instagram influencers to to contract tracing in Manhattan? Or are they even going bother trying to quarantine rich people and instead focus on just making sure poor people are taken out of their houses? I've saw pictures of people in New York yesterday, and very people were wearing masks or socially distancing, so good luck to Bill DeBlasio on getting anyone to participate.

The past 48 hours or so have seen a huge revelation: COVID-19 causes prolonged and progressive hypoxia (starving your body of oxygen) by binding to the heme groups in hemoglobin in your red blood cells. People are simply desaturating (losing o2 in their blood), and that’s what eventually leads to organ failures that kill them, not any form of ARDS or pneumonia. All the damage to the lungs you see in CT scans are from the release of oxidative iron from the hemes, this overwhelms the natural defenses against pulmonary oxidative stress and causes that nice, always-bilateral ground glass opacity in the lungs. Patients returning for re-hospitalization days or weeks after recovery suffering from apparent delayed post-hypoxic leukoencephalopathy strengthen the notion COVID-19 patients are suffering from hypoxia despite no signs of respiratory ‘tire out’ or fatigue.
...
The red blood cells just can’t carry o2, end of story. Only in this case, unlike CO poisoning in which eventually the CO can break off, the affected hemoglobin is permanently stripped of its ability to carry o2 because it has lost its iron ion. The body compensates for this lack of o2 carrying capacity and deliveries by having your kidneys release hormones like erythropoietin, which tell your bone marrow factories to ramp up production on new red blood cells with freshly made and fully functioning hemoglobin. This is the reason you find elevated hemoglobin and decreased blood oxygen saturation as one of the 3 primary indicators of whether the shit is about to hit the fan for a particular patient or not.

> The past 48 hours
Is this actual new info? I remember the medically knowledgeable kiwis discussing this as a possibility ages ago - that it was a blood oxygenation problem, not a lung problem. Your link to the archive of medium is about 5 weeks old, and is just some random blogger speculating. Is there new solid info ?

Personal "We're all sick of this" anecdote, I went to M&S Saturday midday, and it was fucking heaving. Felt like a busy lunchtime. Saw about 4 mask wearers out of what felt like several hundred people. People were sort of playing at social distancing, but not really. Nobody really seemed to care, it was just a vague vestigial move in the opposite direction when you got within a few feet. Other thing I noticed was that there was lots of Rainbow branding that was general "Corona lockdown spirit" rather than "support the NHS" . Is this new? I'm sure all the rainbows used to be NHS specific.

How long do you guys think it'll take for California, Oregon, and Michigan to cave in to public pressure?

Just saying, the state governments are playing with fire trying to force an already agitated people to go jobless until the end of Summer. Perhaps the current protests turn into full blown riots, and those riots inch their way closer to the front door of the governor's mansion.

A couple of congressional seats, maybe. By Then it will be too late. It seems we are watching a replay of the implosion of Weimar in 1933. Lol!

Joke is on them, only a psychopath would need or want a passport. Don't get one. Enjoy your little slice of Earth and read some books.

Hey everybody, this is my update on how lock-down has effected me, and my little town in southern Ontario. So it looks like after 2 months, we may start being able to resume life somewhat. Very depressing being locked in the house for 2 months, despite not being the type of person that is super extroverted; Sucks dog anus to not be able to see friends and family and shit like that, especially with the groups no greater than 5 ban that was imposed. They just opened the marinas and golf course today, originally I was going to play with a few of my buddies, but ended up opting out just because the difficulty of getting a t-time; (Plus I still gotta get some clubs) lol. Camp grounds and shit are supposed to open back up too,

I am not a big camper so that is not really my deal, but it'd be nice to get out though sometime in the summer and go party, and fish in the woods for a weekend though. Shopping malls are going to open, but only curbside, and they have to limit the amount of people entering by that 2m^2 distancing protocol. House cleaners, maintenance people can get back to work too, and workplace limits on essential construction are also being lifted. Mental health services and some elective surgeries (elective screenings too) are beginning to resume, All appointments at the doctor though require you to not enter the clinic though, and the lines at the stores suck fucking dick. Takes anywhere between 15 minutes to half an hour to get into a place to shop. Butcher opened back up, but because of property taxes raising, and people jumping towards the Metro alternative opposed to local food, butcher is probably going to close up at the local market, but luckily long time customers still can get access to their stuff via delivery.

Restaurants are still closed, nightclubs are still closed, and shit is still super limited. They cancelled a lot of local events running up till June, so large gatherings are still banned. Infection rates have stayed steady since our peak in April, and our nursing homes are still getting blasted hard. Every other day we have a death or two, but the death rate is going to stay like that for a long time though. This China Com cough just does not like the elderly, crazy how many people in their upper years die of this thing. That is true with the flu, but older people have enough problems, but cycle of life though.

The CERB is given to students now, they get about $1200.00/month now, luckily I took the last year off of school, so I can still get the regular EI CERB. Unfortunately though, my company is no longer in business, and they sold the business off. So looks like I'm out of a job for the time being, but I'll probably get a call from the new owners, and my old owner still held onto one of his businesses (so I have a couple of options as soon as restaurants open back up). Only perk about being a kitchen guy as long as I've been, is that it shouldn't be too difficult to find work, but a lot of things are going to get wiped out though if they don't allow some of these places to open back up to the public in phase 2.

Luckily I started reinvesting in bullion last month, ended up getting ~6.5% gain, of course it'll fluctuate; Value of silver though broke 16/onz almost at 17/onz, fucking shit myself when I seen that because it wasn't supposed to break through 16 that quick. Gold has been having a steady raise, very happy that I didn't jump into the whole blow all my fucking money on bullshit and booze train like a lot of people tend to do. Just looking at that indicator, the recession that is going to come when all said and done is going to be pretty BAD. History yet again is repeating itself while people still stick their heads in the sand ignoring reality. National average unemployment is ~15%, and where I am at unemployment is real fucking high before the lock-down. Though it's ridiculous now, so I am going to do my best to secure myself for when the windfall hits in Q3. Wouldn't be surprised that we'll at least a 10% unemployment rate once shit gets back rolling, could be more, but again my guess is just as valid as anybody else's at this point.

The Trudeau government is still sucking China off way too much, but the buy local incentive is getting out there little by little. They are speeding up clinical trials with China, which is concerning considering that this whole vaccine pipe dream is going to end up problematic. I just don't understand WHY CHINA out of all countries, we should be more rallied up with the United States with this project. This Trudeau China fixation is going to be the death of us, the Liberal Party needs to be GONE by the next election.
By the looks of the south China sea's right now, the saber rattling is kicking off with full force. Strange to see a lot of conjecture early on, is beginning to come true, what a bizarre timeline indeed. Hope everyone transitions back into some level of normality steadily, much love my Kiwi brothers and sisters.

You don't want to live in Alabama minor power leveling I have a relative that lives there it is a third-world shithole that isn't an exaggeration it is the poorest place in the United States and I mean all of it is a poverty cesspool

Whaddafuck you smoking?

It's no better or worse than anywhere in America. Yeah, there's poor shit, but there's a lot of industry in Decatur and Huntsville. Peeps ain't "poor" by any means. Same in Birmingham and Mobile. Lots of farming and forestry elsewhere and shit is booming.

Does this look ghetto to you? Sitting in the backyard.

Rich or poor, I don't hear anybody bitching here. Peeps seem pretty damn happy with their lives.

Alabama is no fucking different than any other state in this great country. What you choose to do with your life has no fucking geographic boundaries.

Have any US kiwis here had any trouble crossing state lines? Have to go help a relative in Texas soon and just wanted to know if I'll get hassled

I think you lived in burgerland. In which case that taxi driver was off his pills. No way that wouldn't cause a massive shitstorm. On other countries, specially 3rd world, and double specially china, it wouldn't surprise me.

Upon further research the cabbie was wrong on both counts, yes, but he was close enough those conclusions weren't unreasonable and the governor's office had to issue a statement saying 'wait that isn't what we meant', so it's really on them.

Alabama is no fucking different than any other state in this great country.

Except its climate. I don't know how people survive the deep south. Never elsewhere have I experienced the feeling of suffering heat stroke and drowning as if in an oppressive sauna while it poured down in sheets and peals of thunder filled the air loud enough to be heard inside grocery stores.

Paddy wagon is raciss. Shouldn’t it be called a Jogger Wagon?

None at all. Crossed several at the beginning of everything and nobody said anything. The state borders are too big for any serious roadblocks to work.
