The scariest thing about Bowers (and Ting!) is that he acts so sugary sweet during the consultations and aftermath. Always hugging his patients and buttering them up. Look at how he and Ting suck up to Jeanette and Greg as if trying to fool them into thinking that this truly is what's best for Jazz. It's so fake and sinister and they keep trying to cover up their messes with more simpering and lying and making false promises. It makes me sick. It reminds me of Annie Wilkes before she explodes and cuts of the guy's leg. It's fake and all an elaborate ruse for money and media gain. Monsters.

Added side note; Ari barely even acts like a typical "mermaid daughter" that you would have seen back then. She's only as girly as she wants to be. I feel like her and Greg, much as I loathe him, are the only quiet and calm ones in the family. Which makes sense since both are constantly disregarded and forced to participate in shit they obviously hate.

This right here is the reason I am more inclined to believe that trooning out your kids is more about being special than it is about wanting a child of one sex or the other.

Story time moment: years, years ago, around late 90s, I watched some tv show about how a dwarf girl wanted to be "normal" because she'd been told "ugly". Instead of having her mother giving her reassurance and boosting her self-confidence, she freaked out and tried to find a cure. She got her a type of surgery that would add a few inches to your body: it pretty much breaks your leg bones, keeps them apart with some metal thingies, and that allows the bone to grow the extra it needs. The skin remains very scarred and there is really no much difference. Thing is, the girl still was very short compared to their classmates, there was little no change for her, but she felt better. My point is, it's always been the mothers freaking out for having an "odd" kid and they make their children go through hell to feel themselves validate it.

Iirc its more common a surgery for those who suffer from one leg being shorter than another, without doing it they either risk having really bad back problems or having to keep buying specially made shoes.
