I am also of the opinion that Dax is playing a role based on an exaggerated sense of certain aspects of his personality (while borrowing heavily from the likes of Kinison and Clay et al). This is not uncommon among "entertainers". An operative term being "motivation". I am not comparing Dax in whole to Lenny Bruce, but I will go so far as to associate the tendency - exemplified by Bruce - that "entertainers" experience once the boundaries between the shtick and the individual begin to blur and their soft ego and subsequent persecution complex dictate their response to dissenting opinions.
Lenny Bruce completely collapsed, figuratively and literally because his onstage persona took over ("there is nothing more pathetic than an aging hipster") and he saw enemies everywhere due to his being censored and banned from certain clubs. Dax has made it all too obvious that he has a fragile ego. The Dick Masterson persona is supposed to be adept at outflanking and outright bulldozing dissenting opinions. In this instance, it is failing. The Dick persona is being diluted. Lenny Bruce ended up a ranting exceptional, OD'd naked on a hotel bathroom floor, but he was very popular and had rich and popular friends (Phil Spector bought the negatives of his death scene from the police to keep them safe from publishing) and he was still welcome in many clubs. Dax confesses to his cucked gf that he'll need to drop acid for the week because shit is rough. He's clearly drinking on streams. I really don't care what sort of money he's making. Money to the "entertainer" is jet fuel straight into that hotel bathroom floor.
