Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I live in a left-leaning US city: the only people refusing to wear masks are blacks. Earlier today I went to a convenience store, and saw a fat black guy chimping out on the black clerks and black security guard for refusing him service. The guy had a full meltdown like a middle aged white woman. Of course, you'd never hear about that on social media amidst the circle jerk of blaming white conservitards and these supposed "Nazis" for being entitled.

based black man, he should have given a beat down to them.

[Verse 1]
Welcome to the world
I guess you all know why we're here
My name is Fauci
And I became your boss this year
If you want to stay well
You've got to be inside
And put on your face mask
Put on your Purell
I know you look like dorks.
Hey you, with friends?
So sorry, I got you sussed
Out enjoying Mother Nature?
This is a bust
Hey hung up old Mr. Normie
Don't you put up a fuss
If you ain't gonna follow me through any of my ways
You're wrong--I think you must

[Chorus]
We're not going to take it
We're not going to take it
We're not going to take it
We're not going to take it
We're not going to take it
Never did and never will
We're not going to take it
Going to break it
Going to shake it
Let's forget it better still

[Bridge]
Now you must hear me
Your ears must be unsealed
You can't breath either
Your mouth is filled
You will fear all things
And Netflix completes the scene
Here comes CNN
To guide you to
Your very own TV

It's been a meme in far-left circles (judging by the Tumblrettes on my FB timeline) that only white people object to the lockdowns, because we're selfish and stubborn. I'm sure there's someone out there saying it's ultimately because we're used to the world being built for our benefit, and that's why Karen thinks the manager will do what she says.
I'm undoubtedly stating the incredibly fucking obvious at this point, but I can't help but notice that, in my neck of the woods at least, it sure is awfully convenient how only relatively recently has the exceptional "Everyone must wear masks everywhere!" bullshit rolled out when absolutely none of that was happening the past couple months when the hysteria was at its peak.

It's almost like the powers that be were aware the weather was warming and people were at the brink of throwing up their hands, going "Fuck this" and getting on with their lives. So as a last ditch effort they slammed this mask shit last minute to keep the fearmongering going just a little bit longer. Because let's face it, outside of Asian countries where it's more commonplace, the image of a lot of people wearing masks induces fear. It's in every apocalyptic movie involving a disease, we've been raised to be scared of such a sight. The Little Hitlers know this and are using their every advantage while they still can.
I'm out in a suburb of Vancouver with a very high Asian population. Almost everyone wore masks 4 weeks ago (especially the East Asians), but now they've mostly stopped. I think it's just a case of trends spreading from the big cities to the small towns.

funny that Comedy Central thinks people playing a musical instrument touching each other when safe to do is a bad thing. Eh but if they mean that non-whites will not play musical instruments, er, ok, sure, great.

Now speaking of stupid things, the Washington Post (surprise surprise) had an article saying how difficult it is to protect Trump from the virus (can be easily found with a search)

and they write: ' “In any pandemic, the underlying principle is to restrict access” to the president, said Jonathan Wackrow, a former agent in the Presidential Protection Division who left in 2014.'

Wow, it's pandemic! that must be bad! we can sick from a pandemic! It's worse than an epidemic!

OK wait a second. Do they actually know what is a pandemic?

according to the WHO, a pandemic is "A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease" ( https://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/frequently_asked_questions/pandemic/en/ )

this is a new definition, but in any case nobody says a pandemic is infectious.

An epidemic is "the occurrence in a community or region of cases of an illness, specific health-related behaviour, or other health-related events clearly in excess of normal expectancy" ( https://www.who.int/hac/about/definitions/en/ )

Here are examples of non-infectious epidemics:

and if I can think of something right away, there's lots of transexualism going around, ICD-10 (international classification of diseases) code F64.0 ( https://icdlist.com/icd-10/F64.0 ), defined as

"expression of a gender identity inconsistent with or not culturally associated with the gender assigned to an individual at birth combined with the desire to permanently transition to the gender with which they identify."

Whatever non-qualified people say, the specialists who deal with this say it's a disease and they studied a lot to be able to say that.

idk but imho there seems to be a lot of this going around (as well as mixed type 1-2 diabetes) but in my mind I don't think we have to worry about having to protect Trump from "any" pandemic being transmitted by touching hands.

I've tried asking people who talk about a "pandemic" if they can explain to me what is a pandemic but they never actually know. Not a single one so far.

Also some people like to say that they are perfectly healthy because they wear a mask. It's possible to point out that they have glasses (H52.10), male-pattern baldness (L64.9), etc. Even a hickey is a disease (S10.87).

It also seems to be that if we go by the WHO definition hardly anyone is healthy:

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

"complete" physical, mental and social well-being, who has that???

Heyo boyeos. Today is a good fucking day. First the not so good messages. The Tides are starting to mobilize and the corruption of Andalusian private healthcare and specially Los Pascuales is being called out. That is good, but can also cause escalation. You know I am of the opinion that if the White Tide doesn't stop Los Pascuales we're gonna have a violent time, so I mark this as good. But I must say it is still something that can get crazy. The White Tide knows it fights for our lifes, even compared with the other tides, it can get crazy. (Note: in spain we use "Tides" as generic name for coalitions whose purpose is the organization of strikes and protests. Normally made up of unions, sometimes also guilds and student unions. They name themselves by color for ease. White is healthcare, green is the ecologists, who mostly fight against urban expansion into natural reserves and improper waste disposal, purple is feminism, which mostly just annoys gratuituously (seriously they haven't made a single actual proposal in over 20 years now. Even if I was a hardcore radical feminist I'd be pissed off at how useless the purple tides are.) Etc.)

So onto the good news! Economy is growing fast AF. So fsr we're going after 1.75%, only surpassed by the german 1.85%, but during the first half we actually started even better than the krauts until they started going *insert eurobeat here*, and it seems we're gonna be 2nd best by a LARGE margin with 3rd being EurostoXX at 1.4%. Big looser in europe seems to be the britbongs and my heart goes to our tea drinking kiwis, though they have nothing to envy the americans for as NY is going full eurobeat but in reverse, with an outrageous plummet of 19%, holy fuck, NY kiwis, GTFO of there NOW! But I do love how spain's uncompetitive piece of shit economy is suddently giving everyone a run for their money and it's giving even the motherfucking central european powerhouse trouble after having closed last week on top. What the fuck is going on with 2020 I don't know but I'll be damned if it's not impressive. Point is, we're set for a V recovery, which is really fucking good news independently of how we compare with the germans and baguettes. I don't really care about "winning", that's mostly just hilarious, but I do care about the economy going straight up. (UPDATE: After everyone went down a bit spain and germany are locked at 1.6 competing for first place again! Holy fuck we're actually competing with germany for biggest growth in the world again. What the absolute fuck is going on with this timeline?!)

As for the UBI. More details are out:
And the gov has indeed clarified that this means the autonomies will cut a lot of other aid measures which were improper and wasteful. It also calls upon the private sector with benefits towards businesses who give UBI recievers jobs so they seem set for being the engine of the no skill temporary side of the labor market. Overall, it might be the best UBI implementation I've seen in theory and taking into account it's only half of what minimum salary gives you for single adults and only rises to slightly above minimum salary for families with a ton of kids, and that that's a theoretical maximum with most being inbetween even with max crotchspawning. And that it does have measures to assfuck the "submerged economy" which is a mssive fucking anchor in spain's economy... Dude. Somehow our executive actually got intelligent. Wtf is going on why is the spanish government not fucking up I like this parallel dimension I wanna stay here.

Also, China accuses USA of starting a cold war.
While also stomping on Hong Kong protestors after passing ludicrously draconian laws.
So CCP lolcow thread when?

I have more news but not more time. I have no hospital news yet because I'm not being called to help, which is great news, will possibly update when my union contact updates me. Have fun!

I have a dumb question - Where did the whole "Run out and buy toilet paper" thing come from originally? I remember people doing it, and I remember when the stores started running out of it, but why toilet paper specifically?
There was a clip from New Zealand of a couple women fighting over TP. It went viral then (((MSM))) picked it up.

The effect of this exaggerated and not really true in the short term

look at HIV-1 for instance

Im so sick of this shit, just open up everything! the whole Virus was a nothing burger. death rate for elderly is down by a lot this year.

Why is germany not reopening already? You had this shit under control from the word go I find it hard to believe the hospitals and testers aren't ready for any possible spikes.

To be fair. Boogaloo memes got real fucking large doe. And boring. So sometimes even the libertarians get wordy. But in general this pattern is correct.

It's over 1000 2000 3000 4000! http://archive.md/4a8kB
Over 4,000 have died in covid-19 in Sweden
State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell begins the press conference with an update on the world situation. Over 5 million have now been infected by the virus around the world.

- In the world as a whole, this is an upward trend. Brazil, in particular, has many new cases, including the United States, says Tegnell.

More than 4,000 people have now died in covid-19 in Sweden. 33,843 people have so far been found to be infected by the coronavirus in the country.

"Unfortunately, we have lost over 4,000 in total," says Tegnell.

Nearly 2,000 people have so far been cared for in intensive care units around the country for covid-19.

31 people have been reported dead in the past 24 hours. In total, 4029 people have now died in the covid-19 suites. Tegnell warns of a delay after the long weekend.

- We get to see a collection of cases quite clearly, he says.

Anders Tegnell announces that 32,000 people are now being tested per week.

- Although it is not going as fast as we would have liked, the number of samples taken every week increases, he says.

Johanna Sandwall, crisis manager at the National Board of Health and Welfare:

- Despite positive, slowly declining figures, we must remember that health care is heavily burdened.

Today there are 335 hospitalized patients in intensive care units around the country who are ill in covid-19.

- The most vulnerable groups are those who are the oldest and have chronic diseases. Several of them are staying at SÄBOn, special housing, says Thomas Lindén, department head at the same authority and continues:

- Most of the residents in the country have no infected. There are municipalities that do not have a single infected on special housing.

Lena Nyberg, Director General of the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society, MUCF, is on hand to talk about how the corona crisis affects young people in Sweden. She says that many young people feel isolated and worried in the crisis.

- We regularly receive reports of lack of schooling. What we do know is that there will be more young people who quit school without upper secondary education and more young people who finish high schools without a degree, says Nyberg.

The authority has now been given new assignments by the government. One assignment is about establishing young people in working life and the other about informing civil society about the support packages that are available.

Nyberg says that civil society suffered from negative effects during the corona pandemic.

- Many vulnerable groups receive support from civil society. Here you need to strengthen so that people who need a meal, roof over night, can get it. Civil society is doing a fantastic job but may need more support, she says.
A Freudian slip by Giesecke? (The NHA still claims their strategy isn't herd immunity) http://archive.md/FPE36
Changed strategy? Hardly. Giesecke confirms in Godmorgon Sverige that the strategy is restrictions and "when we see that we need a little more dissemination" reduce the restrictions. Need more dead ?? How can it be acceptable that the goal is not to stop the number of dead? Where is the zero vision?

(...)

Word for word: ".. I've done a parable in the past with a thermostat. You see, right now it's getting a little too much spread. >>>

>>> "Then we introduce some little restriction, and we have it for a while. And then you see, no, now we need a little more spread of infection here, or, it does not matter if we get more infection .."

One irritating thing about the lockdown is seeing journalists who can work from home with no problem - they still get paid, their shopping is delivered by Amazon and their food by Uber Eats - loudly criticizing people who actually need to go out to earn money and proclaim how much more virtuous they are than those filthy peasants.

David Markovits pointed it out here, also attached as an mp3.

https://samharris.org/podcasts/205-failure-meritocracy/

People in his social class aren't really affected by the lockdown whereas the working class, aka people who actually do any real work, either get furloughed or laid off and risk bankruptcy or they're the poor bastards who have to do those Amazon and Uber Eats deliveries.

His solution is a one-off tax on the top 5% who've gained from the crisis, which would pay for the bailout to help the majority of the population for whom it was disastrous. Needless to say this bothered the NYT crowd a lot more than a tax on the top 1% or 0.1% because a lot of them are in the 5%, a group of people he points out are pretty much the cause of inequality. The idea that their money be taken away and given to filthy Wallmart shoppers horrifies them despite their claimed belief that income inequality is a bad thing.

Another discussion on much the same theme is Michael Lind and Brendan O'Neill on The New Class war.

https://www.spiked-online.com/podcast-episode/the-new-class-war/

Lind references James Burnham. Orwell was very critical of Burnham but you can see that Burnham's notions of inevitability of oligarchical collectivism really got to him from 1984. So it's interesting to see Lind, who seems like a lapsed neocon, use the notion of it to critique the current managerial elite in the US and UK.

well reopening is pretty much done. we can do almost everything(some with masks). only fun stuff is still not allowed. Our idiot government wants to open the borders for the Pest ridden people of the south, but we still have restrictions.

I realy cant see how they can justify keeping football stadiums closed after this week, the number of cases is below 11k and going down.

Results from the screening of Silesian miners are still flowing in, currently over 2300 have tested positive out of a total of 14 000. And in another interesting piece of news, a city with a very Polish name (Łódź) has carried out antibody testing for nursery and kindergarten personnel, to see if it's safe to reopen them. Well, 456 samples out of 3337 came up positive or "uncertain" (not sure what uncertain is supposed to mean in this context, just quoting the mayor). And unlike miners, in this case we're talking about people who have been sitting on their asses at home for the last two months. When did they catch it?
OK, so about that. It took a while, but all 456 people have had proper PCR tests done and their results are now known. So how many were infected?

You can probably guess it: zero. I'm willing to bet this particular tidbit of info isn't going to make national headlines.

It's good to have a slice of a large city tested and confirmed to be clean, and the antibody test results are curious. But it can't be denied that the city pretty much wasted hundreds of thousands on a bunch of tests that give results irrelevant to the matter in question, apparently with the intention to make a ruckus and score political points. Annoying.

I tried telling you fags back in February/March but you wouldn't listen...

As to the toilet paper thing, I know I bought a couple packs of tp and paper towels back in late Feb when it was popping off on here. I can't recall seeing anything urging me to, but I think I was recalling some tales of urban horror/collapse of society from guys in Venuzuela or Yugoslavia I'd read a couple years back. Something along the lines of tp being something nobody thinks of but it ran out fast. It was cheap so I figured why not.

I don't know if this is for sure over, or if we'll get a second wave or the economic effects will be far worse in a few months. But even though things didn't get as bad as I thought, I feel I'm far more prepared for anything than before, I was very much a "buy it when you run out" person who arrogantly assumed if I really needed anything I was 10 min away from several 24 hour stores, 2 days out from any Amazon delivery, and never carried cash or kept any in my home. Now that's changed, and I can weather a short term crises or long term malaise. I haven't quite got to the level of "prepper ready for Mad Max with 5 years of food" but I'm satsified with where I'm at.

And while some things were as bad as I thought they'd be and some things didn't get as bad, I'm glad to be wrong on that. For example, in the US despite some abortive attempts they never closed state borders, forced people to stay indoors (in most states), declared martial law, or had a govt takeover of grocery stores for food distribution like in China. We had some temporary food shortages but nothing bad, and the power grid stayed up. There weren't people dropping dead in the streets, dying in hospital hallways, and the emergency temp hospitals went largely unused. We haven't been tipped into hyperinflation (yet). Even my stocks bounced back.

I might be eating these words in the fall, but I think this has shown that our society is more resiliant than many thought.

The test results arent irrelevant, they show that the real infection numbers are sooo much higher...

Probably explains why much of the country is completely unconcerned about the virus while the other people are suggesting we stay locked inside our houses forever.

I don't even think it's a red state/ blue state thing at this point. I live in one of the hardest hit counties in my state. It's not a particularly conservative county ,and yet when I walked into a restaurant on Friday to pick up my order, none of the employees were wearing masks. Does the government honestly think people are going to be wearing masks when it's 90 degrees out?
