This guy isn't some liberal loon, he's a Never Trump Republican (former). And according to the article, masculinity is honor, bravery, respecting women and being stoic. He complains that Trump doesn't pay his workers, brags too much, disrespects women and that he talks too much. All of this is true. However, the idea that rural workers would somehow think it's wrong for Trump to swagger is absurd. They don't talk shit because they know they haven't earned it. We can all see that Trump has earned it.

Never trumpers are the embodiment of political cuckholdery; I don't remember seeing any of them take a stand during the entire Covington high school nonsense. Instead, I saw most of them in a race to capitulate before the narrative got reversed, ceding ground that "this wasn't who Republicans are" despite the fact that the high schoolers handled it damn near perfectly and the full video was available to prove it. And that's just one example. I don't even know why the left keep them around: they're not going to convince any Republican voters (Trump's party approval is 96%), they have no power, and all they do is scoff about manners. Hell, they're probably not even fun at parties.

Even funnier is that I think they originally started doing it because Trump seemed mildly proud of being "45", with some sneery article mentioning how it was embroidered "prominently" on his shirt lapels or something. So I'd imagine some of the original bits of refusing to acknowledge the number came from the usual "If he likes it we'll destroy it" derangement, but of course quickly lost the thread and descended into pure (as you said) magical thinking regarding avoiding it and instead praising the number 44.
