Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I didn't make up the first two pretty graphs . They're lifted directly from the ONS link I posted. They're mainly there to add colour to my post. The data will be from the start of the outbreak, for England & Wales. If you're interested in this stuff , then those ONS links and the spreadsheet posted have loads of quality data to work with.

I only made up the shitty spreadsheet screen grab (third pic), please disregard it , as it's not publication quality data. I made it because I wanted to see what the mortality rate was for different age groups, rather than having it rounded for the whole country, which is all the media will ever say (if they mention it at all).

>Did your data show really that around 20% of 55-59 and 60-64 y.o. deaths are from the virus???? because if so it's not great.
Yes, it does show that, but I think you've got a bit of the base rate fallacy going. It's like when they say "DRUG INCREASES RISK OF CANCER BY 50%!" . And you find it means an incredibly rare form of cancer goes from 2 in 10,000,000 to 3 in 10,000,000 .
I cut these graphs off at 13-Mar because nothing happens before then. But yes, normally in England and Wales (pop 55 million) about 250 50-54 year olds are dying week in , week out. Covid bumped that up to 400 or so per week for a few weeks . There are about 4,500,000 people in that age bracket.
I agree, it's not nothing, but it's not huge.

Hello and thanks for the answer, quite informative.

I just would like to pick up on this -

"Yes, it does show that, but I think you've got a bit of the base rate fallacy going. It's like when they say "DRUG INCREASES RISK OF CANCER BY 50%!" . And you find it means an incredibly rare form of cancer goes from 2 in 10,000,000 to 3 in 10,000,000 ."

I disagree, because we're talking overall deaths, not a statistical improbability. So it's not like there was some rare disease in England and Wales which went up from 5 a year to 7 a year, but overall deaths.

So I mean every year there's a share of heart attacks etc. but if an infectious disease adds to the deaths of the overall population then it's doing something.

This being said, I wonder if it means really overall or hospitalised patients...

... and I checked and it's not deaths caused by the virus but "involving the virus".

The overall deaths during some weeks went up 100% compared to last year. I wish they had the average age though. Because as you say, some people were very old and sick.

But if we're talking about deaths "involving" the virus instead of "caused by" the virus it's a big difference.

What is interesting is that checking the first page of the thread, people were being very right about the future of the virus in January. Also I think people are wasting too much time talking about the virus, that's a definite side-effect :-D

Also "attacks on the south for not spending enough"? Fucking lol. Ever heard of a debt crisis you daft krauts? We can't spend shit 'cause we ain't got shit! Spanish news have yet to echo this but I'm gonna love when they do.
That was 10 years ago... thats more than enough time to fix your shit..

I am looking forward to Greece asking for another multi-billion Euro bailout from the EU because the corona virus ruined their tourism for the year. Telling the rest of the EU to foot the bill for Greece when Europe's economy is tanking is only going to fuel the far-right nationalist political parties that want out of the EU.
Greece atleast tried to reduce their debt, unlike Italy and spain...

Is this accurate? Interesting stats if so. I think the most affected European countries have 50-60 deaths per 100,000. Lombardy has 150 or so. My country has 2.6.

I also think that when the dust settles, that the Covid deaths will mainly be people checking out a year early. That the death figures for a year from now will be under the running average of 10,000 per week. The Grim Reaper is just getting ahead of his workload schedule a wee bit.

Greece was left nearly untouched by rona, and has actually performed above average economically all throughout the crisis, even hilariously placing itself as the fastest growing EU member yesterday, and the july season is looking good for them. So I'd have questions if they needed a large rescue.

I know your whole schtick is being an asshole. But spain's austerity measures were so assfucking they caused us to become the EU country with the second highest poverty rate and the western EU country with the least social protection spending. We have had many, many fucking social and economical disasters because we've had to fucking maim ourselves just to try and break even. And far from fucking helping european entities have consistently tightened the fucking noose by adding more 3rd world deals that compete with us, more restrictions for our exports, more fucking benefits to morocco and demanding more and more cuts with the latest being the EU commision basically telling us to just go ahead and condemn our own retirees to poverty for a quick buck! We've done fucking leaps and bloody bounds in this decade but every time shit looks good for us we get a new fucking notice assraping is coming from the BCE again. What's today? Oh france is changing the farm grant requirements to cut us off again? Well same as last year then!

So don't. You. Fucking. Dare. Buddy. That's a hard line you just crossed with that bullshit.

Australian facebook. I'm not kidding.

Way back when this had China shut down and the rest of the world's preppers were gearing up some galaxy brained individual noted that of the essentials paper products were imported. They naturally assumed it was from the now shuttered China not North America. Panic and hoarding ensued and it spread everywhere on idiot social media inertia.
The Hong Kong Bog Roll Heist was in mid February due to panic buying there. archive . The Aussie Woolworths story was early March.
but I think I was recalling some tales of urban horror/collapse of society from guys in Yugoslavia I'd read a couple years back.
This. I think it came from Selco, who was in the Yugo war. Prepper meme leaked out to a wider audience. See my earlier post.
It's a bit of a meme in survival/prepping forums that as far as I can see comes from a chap called Selco .
I think "Buy toilet paper!" became an absolute rule amongst preppers, and this has leaked over into normie conciousness. At which point it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as we've seen where it has run out.

Care Homes
Yes, shocking, but I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years some memo from 2020 crops up working out that the sick old people who were going to die with the virus in the homes were going to die anyway in just a few years so if they died before a lot of money would be saved and this money could be used to keep younger people healthy so they can work more.
I've failed to find hard figures, but from memory, in the UK the average length of stay in an old folks care home is under two years. And they don't leave because they get better... . Best I can find is this US article from The Snitch that says 80% are dead in under a year. archive . Basically, you don't go into a care home until you are so fucked that you can't manage at home even with daily visits from a carer. I.e pretty much finished. So, it sounds harsh, but the care home deaths were probably only dying 6 months before they would have. I think there'll be a dip next winter with fewer deaths than usual.

EU / Brexit
Why the fuck would it even matter what the EU says unless it's their money being wasted?
The EU has many many rules, some of which prevent state aid to national industries. UK Industries have died because of us following this rule. Other rules demand borrowing be kept within 3% of GDP. But , as some countries are more equal than others, the rules are broken with impunity by the central core - Germany and France. The UK, being still just about British tended to follow the rules, like good Protestant suckers. The resentment at this state of affairs was a large part of Brexit. Even the Pro EU Independent commented on it (2018) :
The Indescribably Boring said:
The new statistics echo the latest available EU-wide figures on enforcement actions from the end of 2016, provided by the European Commission, which found Germany joint top with Spain.
Those countries were followed closely by Belgium, Greece, Portugal and France – all longstanding fans of the European project.

Despite Brexit and higher levels of euroscepticism generally, the UK was relatively good at implementing EU rules compared to its neighbours and was down in 14th place in the hall of shame

I shall not get tested for the ChiCom Flu unless I am very sick and believe I might have it.
The only other reasons that would motivate me to be tested -- in addition to my aforementioned work-related reasons -- would be some combination of someone close to me testing positive or my showing symptoms. Otherwise, I'll pass for now.

Other Michigan News:

Michigan has expanded the statewide rules for who can now get tested for COVID-19. Certain counties and localities are going further and finally allowing anyone to get tested. According to what i heard on the radio, a doctor's order is no longer necessary in Michigan , either.

(Archive #1: Michigan COVID-19 Testing article)

Michigan residents who presently receive SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutritional Assistant Program aka food stamps) will receive maximum benefits in May just as they did in April.

In the city of Detroit, 43% of those that were working prior to COVID-19 have lost their jobs either temporarily or permanently. The article also makes more claims about the race gap in terms of unemployment and coronavirus infections, but Detroit is majority African-American, so one might expect the predominant race to have more of those issues (TL;DR - No kidding, this is as surprising as someone announcing water is wet).

Local Statistics:

With yesterday being the holiday, I waited until today to collect the numbers. My hometown had 13 new cases and somehow has one less death than it did last week 🤷‍♂️. The city I work in had neither new cases nor new deaths.

Countywide, there's been 8244 cases, 950 deaths, and 6442 "recovered" (30 days out from the onset of illness). That leaves 852 infected individuals who neither died nor recovered (as defined). Based on the county's seven day average of cases, we may have already had a very negligible second wave earlier this month and the death rate has been gradually decreasing to be near zero. Whether this leads to less restrictions in next two weeks remains to be seen. :optimistic:

Thats because you are ruled by complete IDIOTS... Even the Commies in Portugal performed better than spain.
Its hard to feel bad for you if you keep on voting for the most retarded people you can find.

Thats also part of voting for retarded people time and time again, spains power isnt much smaller than the power of france and you would find friends in other southern state. but you cant because you have the idea that voting for muppets is a clever.
Farm grants should go away all together, they are expensive as hell and only help lazy farmers.

the solution to every problem you come across is shooting yourself in the foot.
Trimming the lean meat instead of the fat---

Why should i help you out with my hard earned money if you done everything to yourself?
you had the brilliant idea to finance a house for everybody, you build those houses in realy bad places and wasted giant amounts on getting them on a grid.

but the worst idea was to kill your tourism industry. you had a couple tourist ghettos where germans, brits, dutch and others had their fun.
And you came to the conclusion that loud outside music shouldnt be allowed anymore in those ghettos, the next step was making it harder to be drunk.
beeing naked on the beach was no problem in the good times, now its a hefty fine and a club to the face if you are drunk.
You killed the goose that laid the golden eggs because it was to noisy.

Ah well that does explain it. Funny. Spain never encountered issues with that law because we can't even afford to break it to begin with. Funny. France at least changes the rules with bullshit requirements when they want to be the only ones breaking them.
France is almost as broke as spain for the same reasons.

Seems Germany just doesn't give a shit altogether.
the difference is that if germany says its new debt is X% of GDP it is realy X%.
Italy pretends to be to stupid for math, spain reports fake numbers, France uses every loophole and greece just doesnt report numbers at all.

- A timeline of events, showing cover ups
- China is Asshole.

It seems TheEpochTimes is an anti communist China news organisation , run by Chinese immigrants in the US. They have ties to Falun Gong, and seem to to be considered Right wing conspiracy nuts by the Main Stream Media. Anger as right-wing "conspiracy" magazine on coronavirus lands through Edinburgh doors
The Epoch Times, which blames China's Communist Party for the pandemic, has been criticised for sending its publication to homes in Scotland

CBC , Canada . archive . Also from April 29th
Some Canadians who received it by mail and a postal carrier who says he is forced to deliver it are angry over a special eight-page edition of the paper exploring the idea that the virus that causes COVID-19 was created as a biological weapon and arguing it should be called "the CCP virus," a reference to the Chinese Communist Party.
...
Armstrong was also worried the issue's anti-Communist Party messaging could inflame racial tensions in Canada during the pandemic.

An email sent to councillors in Oxford! The horror, an unsolicited email! archive
Same general response in the press - criticising the Chinese government is racist. So stop it.
Both the video and newspaper make claims that China covered up the spread of coronavirus in early 2020 and call for it to be renamed the ‘CPP virus’ after the ruling political party in the country.
...
She added: “Hostility and racism against Asian people has risen a lot since the crisis, any attempt to call it a Chinese virus will increase tensions and no one needs that.”

There's a few other hits, and the narrative is remarkably consistent across countries and newspapers. "Criticising China is racist. Epoch Times are racist right wing conspiracy theorists." . The comments often seem to come from some local minor councillor.

Update: Russia And China Spread Coronavirus Conspiracies About US In Middle East | NBC News 5/26/2020 5:17 minutes

My take. The base premise of the vid I can validate first hand with my dealings in the Pacific Rim. Both Russia and China are doing the usual bullshit spin doctoring. One of me contracts was working in a area known as "Little Kabul". Used to get my "real" Turkish coffee and my hooka supplies. This was a time before hooka parlors were a thing and wayyyy before vaping. Was a apple/orange spice freak blend with Turkish tobacco. You got some nice people but damn a lot of them are dumb as fuck in the matter of common sense as tribialism is deep there.

But this is also a case were this is a news corp trying to make more news as the whole Russia/China thing has been going on for months now. Not all Arabs are Rag heads. There are those that buck the trend. Those are the ones you listen too.

Speaking of trends. I do not like the mask gig market that has popped up. Where are they being manufactured? A lot of them have valves which will eventually fail as they are designed to do so.

Right now I am using the AO SAFETY pleated style of mask model 1054. It's designed for dusty contruction/paint booth/auto body work. N95 rating.
They are a thicker version of your standard N95 mask. 3M sells a non pleated version with the same thick material. This means that you can clean with a vacuum cleaner and the rims of the mask gently with rubbing alcohol. That is where the sweat and grime is.. on the rim of the mask. After that you let them air dry. Buy a few and rotate them out and overall they will last longer.

Still not affected by Conona chan. Still having to go to several hot spots where I live. And living good as my preparations are paying off big time.

I'm glad to discuss this. I'm aware that I've come at this data with a predetermined opinion - that the overall rate of death is tiny for anyone not old and unwell. So I'm seeing the same numbers as you, but feeling them different. It's good to be challenged.
For me:
450 deaths a week (at the peak) out of 4.5 million people is 1 in 10000. Whereas normally it is 1 in 18000.

I understand your point - it's like if a woman wants anticonception, if you don't want to write it, you say it will make you six times more likely to have a stroke, if you have no problem and she asks, you say your chances of a stroke will increase from 1 in 2 million to 1 in 500,000. Amd a stroke doesn't mean you'll die or incapacitated.

I agree that most of the deaths regard people with preconditions - *however* many of these conditions can be managed for years, like diabetes and blood pressure.

I also agree that next year we might see two things - either a drop of overall mortality in the age-groups or not, depending of their being people who wouldn't have lasted the year.
8
Mortality in certain Italian provinces went down as people learnt to put masks on and wash their hands (Rome -9,5% Matera -14.5%

With diabetes, obesity, reduced lung function, etc. people can live for years.. Was the virus just a Malthusian instrumeng to 'reset' a society in which were going to die anyway. But if you're taking 20 years away from someone who would have died at 75, not 50. I hope they will be using QALYs which will show the kind of pats who died.

The same thing arrived here a week or two ago. My first reaction was "WTF is this?" because I had neither seen nor heard of it before its arrival. The front page reminded me of a so-called birdcage magazine such as the National Enquirer, so I discarded it unread into the papers being recycled.

I suppose one has to give them credit for trying to make the information known. Unfortunately, today's polarized, hyper-partisan environment is such that those people aren't open to other opinions and ideas and those that are open-minded probably already figured out most of what this newsletter is reporting.
