Unless you want to argue that having a cop dig his knee into your neck/cervical spine is completely painless and does no harm at all, now.

His bladder would have let go regardless of how he died. The body does that upon death because the muscles holding the bladder shut are no longer getting signals from the brain to remain contracted.

And I didn't say having a knee in the neck was painless. I said it's normally safe. I grew up in a law enforcement household and have known officers my whole life. I've undergone much of the same training law enforcement officers go through for my job, including handcuffing and maintaining control of a perp. I've been the guy with the knee in his neck getting cuffed up during training. Everyone going through handcuff training goes through it so they know what it's like, just like anyone trained to carry a taser or pepper spray has to get tazed/sprayed to be licensed to carry it.

There is a reason officers are trained to use these tactics. It used to be officers would hold a perp in a chokehold with their arm or batton. Perps would struggle, choke to death, and the department/precinct/agency would get sued for wrongful death. That's why they looked for a safer way to subdue a perp and started instructing officers to get them on the ground face first and pin their neck. Some agencies went with pinning the back, but that caused some perps to suffocate because their lungs and diaphragm were being compressed, and it's not as effective at maintaining control as the neck.

There was a reason, because handcuffs cuff a person's hands. Not the arms, feet, legs, or head. You can move with your hands cuffed together. You can hurt people with your hands cuffed together. You can't move or hurt people with a knee on your neck. The process works.

Which suggests that he had been fighting them, resisting arrest, and making it difficult to cuff him. The officers probably felt that he was a flight risk, which is why one of them kept him pinned. Could be that they were waiting for transport to get there to take him to be booked. Not all police cars have the back seat set up to transport a suspect, so often times they have to wait for one to arrive on site. If he had been fighting and struggling with them then it makes sense for them to keep him controlled and subdued until transport arrives on site.

That is the most outrageous part of this whole incident. Mayor Frey didn't even wait a day before firing all four officers, he didn't fire them before a formal investigation could be completed, he fired them before one could be started. That was a brilliant move. If the MPD had a problem because of this it's now much larger as no officer is going to want to do their job there, officers are going to leave for other departments, and nobody's going to want to start there.

I feel like a broken record, but officers have lost their lives to perps who've had their hands cuffed behind their back. Perps have gotten guns out of officers holsters or pulled concealed knives and killed officers that way. Perps have also have been able to get their hands in front of them to do the same or strangle officers with the cuffs. It usually happens when the officers let their guard down, assuming the perp is no longer a threat because his hands are cuffed behind him. Which is why they instruct officers these days to never let their guard down or assume the perp isn't a threat. The threat is always there until they've been taken in to be processed and thoroughly searched.
