At risk of derailing a bit but i would apreciate a crash course on why Skullgirls failed, im more of an art person and very bad at fightings games, so when i saw the quality artwork in skullgirls i could had sworn it was gonna make it big but it kinda just fizzled out.

I can name a few.

Reason 1: Release window
The game was released in 2012. This was not only after the abysmally selling Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, but also around the time that Fighting Games were losing their grasp once again despite it coming back in a huge way thanks to Street Fighter IV's release.

Reason 2: Platforms and Accessibility
The game was a download only title during a time where download only titles were mostly for single player titles or "time wasters" instead of full fledged games, unless it was a rerelease such as a Virtual Console title on Wii. It also was only on PS3 and Xbox for a while and the re-releases kept getting delayed.

Reason 3: Not popular among fighting game enthusiasts
As a person who loves fighting games I was hard pressed to find anyone who liked playing this game or anyone who did play this game. The communities I found were very tight knit and usually had 1 versus 1 fights. I've heard reasonings as to why some people don't like it ranging from "The characters aren't fun to play" to "there are better tag in fighting games"

Looking back, there was another thing I noticed about Skullgirls. It wasn't exactly big among the FGC audience, but it was big among people who weren't too big into fighting games in the same way that games like Pokken (and other licensed fighters) were. People weren't drawn to Skullgirls for the gameplay as much as they were the characters and unique art direction. For a single player game this works wonders, and the same goes with multiplayer games that aren't solely targeting the pros. But arcades are dead and fighting games are a niche genre. Unless you're taking the Smash route and making a party fighter the pros need to embrace it. Pros don't need Crysis level graphics to latch onto a game, just look at oldschool games that still retain popularity.

I never heard anyone talk about the gameplay of Skullgirls, just about the graphics and characters. Either any given random gamer didn't care for Skullgirls and it was "just another game" that merely exists, or they were diehard fans of the characters at least even if the last time they played Skullgirls was months ago.

It's weird how all drama-thirsty female artists match the exact same profile. They're short, chubby to the point of passing as a fat teenage boy, have hunky "studly" OCs, want to dominate scrawnier boys (oh-so-dom Sanic), but lose interest and go back to being pastel girls once their peers lose interest or get real and find employment and dress accordingly. You can practically pinpoint all the tropes of these girls down to the designs of their OCs. Always some weird mix of big beastly cartoony claws and a huge mane, or the straight opposite in something so masculine you'd think it was made by a nerd from high school tired of being beaten up.

Oh man, the Smogon forums and community are a drama pit. The Smogon article on Dramatica sums it up well, they're "tourneyfags" in the sense they turn a kids game played on school playgrounds into a OMG HARDCORE TOURNAMENT game.

To be fair the TPCi-sanctioned events are viewed as being important in the grand scheme of things since a lot of the more serious nerfs to the video games (and the TCG to a lesser extent, I've only seen ONE card getting banned from the Standard format during my tenure) are through tournament results. There's also the fact that the bigger tournaments like various International Championships and the yearly World Championships often give out cash prizes (which is a recent change, I remember when scholarships were the "main" prize) to the winners.

But as far as cows go it's better to pay attention to the judges rather than the players. The latter can yield some funny moments (Like Gino getting slap on the wrist for stealing thousands of dollars worth of cards and a laptop from another player and then netting a lifetime ban for supposedly stacking his deck and Zach getting a player DQ'd from an online tournament due to being triggered by said player's username and hoping he'd continue on despite losing the round) but some IRC chat leaks revealed that VGC judges often give veteran players preferential treatment despite them often running hacked Pokemon in their teams.

...and on that note I'll leave any other tournament-related stories to the Pokemon Lolcow thread.
