It might be worthwhile for him to make ideas like that into comic scripts. They follow a lot of the same rules as film scripts, and if he was able to save up some money he could actually commission someone to draw the thing.

I think with Connor's love of film, it might not be a bad idea to invest in a camera and stat shooting some short films with just friends and family for practice. Horror and martial arts movies are pretty much the cheapest films to make. Maybe he knows somebody that does karate?

Connor, I think you really want to make movies more than you want to write books. It's clearly where your passions lie.

I think kind of like the idea of storyboarding. It could be a helpful tool to make this concept a reality. A way to get the ideas out of @Connor 's head and in a form that other people can see and enjoy as well.

It is productive and lets Connor move forward with his project.

I'm repeating myself, but maybe part of the problem was that you were trying to write a movie as a book?

Even then, if he just wants to write a film script there's a program that's free and essentially the industry standard.

I may be sperging, but after I get some short stories and the first draft of Alphaboy done, I'm thinking of writing a script for my director bud, Albert Pyun. Before I do that, I'll send the finished short stories over to him, and see if I'm the screenwriter he's been looking for.

And yes, I have Celtx.

Shit, man, go for it! You already got a connection there, use that to your favor!

I agree with this. I think even with the best will in the world, trying to channel what makes 80s movies distinctive and interesting into novel form is never going to work, in the same way that you can't really capture everything that makes a really great literary classic in a film.

But I think Hellblazer might be onto something too, because comics do have a fair bit in common with films as a medium, and it's less setup intensive than trying to get hold of a camera.

There's always Fellow South Carolinian Auteur @Joe_Cracker.

It's not going to be a big budget movie, y'know. If he likes the shorts, and if I write a script for him, we'd have to look for someone willing to put just a little bit of money into it. It'd probably go direct-to-video/television, maybe have an ultra-limited run in a couple of theatres. Nothing really earth-shaking.

Albert's a genre movie veteran. He's been at work since the early eighties, and even churned out some quality B-movies for Cannon. His most well known movies are the 1990 Captain America adaptation, the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie Cyborg, Andrew Dice Clay's Brainsmasher: A Love Story, the Nemesis series...

As an aside, Connor, I agree that deciding not to share your work with Kiwifarms is a good decision. This may not be the right place for you to get criticism, for a number of reasons. And, no direspect to my fellow Kiwis, I don't think we as a group have any particular expertise in literary criticism.

However, I hope this isn't put you off the concept of criticism/editing of your work entirely. I do think it's probably best to wait until you have a complete first draft before you ask for feedback, though.

I'm under no delusions of it being a big budget film. I know a couple that made their own z-grade zombie film and have worked on small horror movies and stage productions for years, and I imagine most people who know people in film probably know independent filmmakers.

I'm not sure if he would direct your film for you, but he could give you some valuable advice and guidance. Does your college have an AV club? I'd look into it. You could also borrow or rent cameras. Look into film classes. I think you would be a lot happier.
