Andrew Torba / Gab (Gab.com / Gab.ai) / Dissenter (dissenter.com) - An incompetent captain sinking millions of other people's dollars.

It's official; They're leaving the network šŸ˜… Oh but not because they aren't smart enough to figure out basic shit like relays, no, they're going to build a NEW Fediverse 🤣🤣 I'm sure that will go swimmingly.

Rob insists the initial break was on purpose, even though the way it was carried out makes no sense, if that were true they would have switched the site to to whitelist only mode, which requires no code changes and has existed in Mastodon forever.

The only Devil's Advocate here is that they might've broken whitelist mode with their changes, like they did everything else 🤣 but they still could've ditched AP entirely, instead of only half-breaking it.

Gleason suggested in response to this that they have almost no familiarity with their own software, to the point they confuse ActivityPub and MastoAPI. So I figure even if it was intentional, they might not've known how to kill it properly.

I'm sure people will be joining up in droves for the blackjack and hookers.

Does Trump even know of Gab's existence?
Probably not, and it won't happen. Celebrities won't be the first to migrate to a platform, you need organic growth such that the celebrities are incensed to come to you. No celebrity that has moved to Gab has stayed there.

Gab is also in the process of killing more organic growth. Rob more or less suggested more of a focus Twitter compatibility as a trade-off for ditching ActivityPub until they develop a new protocol (which will never happen). It sounds convenient on the surface, but if it's only working one way, the natural incentive it creates is getting Gablins to focus on Twitter, not vice versa. ActivityPub works because it's fluid, you communicate with users of different platforms as if it were the same site. The new direction is a step backwards in practically every conceivable way.

But their old as fucking dirt supporters will donate anyway so screw it lmfao.

So it's absolute shit, unsurprisingly. The benefit of Gab, if there even is one at this point, is that it isn't Twitter. It certainly isn't communicating with a bunch of retarded Nazi boomers who were kicked off every other platform for being utter shit.

No big retarded fiasco today, but Gab's staff seems overwhelmingly in support of the upcoming Executive Order, and are trying to piggyback off it by getting Donald Trump on? Even though this legislation is a slap in the face to them, Kiwi Farms, and any independent platform, and has the potential to ruin the US as a prosperous hosting country.

KF isn't really actionable under the wording because KF is in essence a free for all.
People get banned both here and there for stupid reasons on the whims of autistic jannies, not for violating rules, and with no recourse. It's no different than Twitter or Facebook. Be afraid!

I know this is from yesterday, but Durbo was really shilling hard to Trump:

Trump will never, ever spend a single nanosecond on the shithole that is gab. The entire reason that he engages with social media as a 73 year old boomer is to communicate with millions of his userbase directly, and to simultaneously trigger his millions of detractors into apoplexy. Neither goal is achieved by wasting time on a site that has ~2000 daily active users (this is a generous estimate) and less functionality than beta twitter. Torba is a delusional dumbass.

I already said it, but I feel the absurdity is being lost. If Twitter can't nuke people at random anymore, Gab has no way to market itself. It has a better UX, but that can only get you so far. You could probably just recreate an approximate frontend to work with Twitter if you wanted to.

Anyone up for a betting pool on how long this lasts?

Not even a month ago they were pitching Twitter integration as an apology for nuking AP.
Well considering that Twitter ironically is the only means for Andrew Torba to advertise his shitty website, I'd say two months at the least.
Visa just pulled the plug. Surprising that it took so long.
If this sort of thing keeps up, I won't be surprised if Andrew Torba will have no choice but to finally shut down Gab due to the lack of funds.

It's clear to me that Gab is a complete failure whether Andrew Torba wants to even admit it or not; no one wants to do business with him and it's clear that he never cared that much for free speech anyway, he just wanted to create a hugbox for people that adopt his views only.

So are there any decent alternatives to social media? Well yeah there are plenty of them but Gab is not one of them anyway.

Gab will go down as the Alt-Tech Movement's biggest failure.

They've shifted their marketing to Facebook users, which is a smart move. Far more real people there as opposed to Anons, so the allure of a less censorious platform carries more weight. They seem to be having some growth over the past month or so. They redesigned the UX as a more streamlined, efficient version of Facebook just before breaking with the AP Network too. It's coded like shit but they're doing some things right.

I think we'll have several years of Gab to come, until the next wave of alt microblogging platforms hit their stride. I believe that will be Pleroma based, and if so, it would be especially funny, since Pleroma was Gab's primary source of external traffic for a year, and there are several sites essentially running Gab on a Pleroma backend right now. Once multiple frontends are easier to implement I wouldn't be surprised if the Kiwi Farms Pleroma got it.

Gab will go down as the Alt-Tech Movement's biggest failure.
Alt tech is a meme lol. Any centralized platform will either become indistinguishable from the mainstream or fail in the long term. Bitchute is another example of a meme alternative that's most likely more fraudulent than Gab, tbh. They've been selling the idea of decentralization for years with no actual plans for achieving it. The protocols exist, Peertube exists, though it has a few more issues, but it also has advantages, you can integrate it seamlessly with your Pleroma/Mastodon/Formerly_Gab feed. They should be porting to ActivityPub, it would give them an immediate leg-up and solve hosting costs overnight.

You also have Minds, very similar to Gab in principle, which looks like a website from two thousand fucking nine, they've gotten ridiculously worse since the founding. cryptoshekel implementation is annoying. Has also supposedly had plans to implement ActivityPub for like 2 years, and has never followed through.

A roundabout way to make a point, but generally speaking, if anything labels itself as "Alt Tech" you can be 1,000% sure it's dog shit. Ironically, even though Gab is the easiest to make fun of because it is a circus, it's also pretty damn good compared to every other "Alt Tech" that came up in its era. The current design is decent. Most of the crippling bugs are gone for now (though they're amidst a complete backend rewrite so I don't expect that to hold.) If you're looking for news, they've done a great job at integrating current events into the UX and the Trends site. Gab is the most frustrating failure because you know it's the type of thing that could have been good if the management weren't so incompetent. /endrant
