Twitter Hides POTUS Tweet

Also, I understand the extent of the situation here and how it would really fuck up Josh as well as pretty much every single other site on the internet, especially pirating sites, HOWEVER

If this turns out to be a complete nothingburger, I will LAUGH SO HARD. I will meme this fucking thread so brutally. I will take screenshots of this thread and hang it on my "Wall of Gay" next and glue dildos on it. This better actually be a HABBENING, I want some enjoyable stuff to come out of this.

The internet was fine before* 230 and it will likely be fine after.

This idea that it will allow the US government to kill the internet is overblown imo. There no practical way to enforce it (just look at all the failed attempts to censor the internet in the UK and China) and there's no motivation to enforce it (the US government isn't going to spend a fortune chasing no-name internet forums in foreign countries).

There's the obvious loop hole of allowing false flaggers to run rampant. Want a site shut down? Create some offending post and report them to the US government. The government would soon get sick of having to do lengthy trials against every site that Twitter checkmarks don't like.

So even in the worst case scenario where small forums disappear and big tech cracks down on everything and anything, I doubt that state would last very long unless the US government criminalizes all internet.

*I don't know when 230 was made so it could be something that predates the internet and was modified over time, in which case it can continue to be modified.

What's so funny about it?

Feel free to rate this optimistic, but my guess is that Trump is mostly sabre-rattling here. In order to actually repeal Section 230, he'd have to get bipartisan support in Congress. Between "Orange Man Bad" and Silicon Valley spending more money on lobbying than Wall Street, that's basically never going to happen.

The EO potentially lets him use the near-infinite power of government lawyers and red tape to screw with companies that particularly annoy him though, so Jack has probably painted a target on Twitter's back.

Either Trump is a mastermind of intimidation and negotiations... or he is a complete retarded mutant.
I don't see why it needs to be a choice between the two.

Most people will never meet a high net worth individual. They're very strange, they think about things that would never occur to you and me. At the same time, they often don't know how to do simple things like operate a microwave.

I don't expect to ever understand Trump as a person, all I know for sure is his opposition tends to be cruel and vicious. Accusations made against him tend to be for things done by the other side. That lends a little more weight to the first interpretation.

Oh, he's going to get it, there is nothing more the 6 megacorp internet giants wants and dems want too. It's all part of the "program".

Here's why repealing 230 is a bad idea for the laymen on this forum.

The first thing is it'll intensify censorship, because now websites will have much less of a safe harbor for when shit hits the fan. The second thing is well, let's say Null actually shuts the site down Lavabit or CL personals style (can't run it under US law so and so, blah blah). So a disgruntled Kiwi decides to start their own offshoot forum with hookers and blow since the original is gone anyway.

It's now a lot harder to. The issues that plagued this site such as hosting problems and mad lolcows writing Cloudflare complaints are still there. Section 230 is supposed to legally protect you against a lot of problems websites can legally face from users and with that gone, you've got more than just a bunch of shitty webhosts and domain registrars to deal with. You could be in legal trouble when your site pisses off someone much easier, or if someone decides to advertise their school shooting there. That's just the tip of the iceberg but it makes hosting a site like this not legally feasible. Twitter on the other hand? They still have the ability to throw lawyers at the problem and make it go away or get pushed under the rug. Do you think a smaller site like this has big tech industry lawyers?

But hey god-emperor Trump said it's good so it must be good.

Oh and here's a quick edit: this is going to affect a lot more websites than just shitposting sites if it comes to pass.

tor was cracked by the feds the moment it started gaining traction in the US.
They don't care all that much about dark web shitposting sites where no drugs or cheese pizza is being sold or exchanged (optimistic).

Maybe it's just youthful wishfulness but I don't think darknet kiwifarms would have any more fed attention than we already have.

I am really hoping this is Trump being a retard as usual. The best thing would have been everyone forgetting about 230 and it just seeps into the annals of history and stands forever. That won't happen though.
Well given how the history between Trump and Twitter spans a good four years by this point. I get the feeling he won't drop it easily unless Twitter backs down from their SJW agenda. Which won't happen because then they'll complain about Twitter turning Far-Right and the cycle repeats when Twitter decides to censor everyone instead.

They're never going to take direct responsibility unless Trump decides to take them to task with the threat of shutting them down, and that's never going to happen considering it means that a platform both he, and millions, use on an hourly basis, will be gone.
