I'd argue he shows his background as a talentless improv comedian specificly. There are improv people who are skilled and entertaining, mostly back from more than a decade ago when it wasn't as popularized, and those people are the ones who aren't confined to having to fall back on stock repertoire. They're the ones who are good almost entirely because of how dynamic their act is, and how they appear to create something new for every situation. If they're ever returning to an old well then they at least do it in a novel way or manage to put a twist on it.

Dick is easier to characterize as a guy who just went and took improv lessons, along with thousands of other shitty aspiring comedians when it became the thing to do. Just like most of the rest of them, he shouldn't have been there in the first place. Even worse for him, he had to lean on wearing costumes and playing a piano just to get by. There's no dynamic quality to his attempts at comedy. It's almost anti-improv. He might as well be reading out of a joke book at this point, because that's closer to what his act is like. Top 100 raunchy jokes that will leave your friends in stitches.
