I know nothing about guns or gun laws so bear with me here.

What's preventing someone from shooting the protesters because they feel threatened? Wouldn't it be self defense? Some protesters have gone to residential areas, right?

Self-defense isn't as airtight as many people conceptualize it to be, depending on where you live. We might reasonably infer that store and homeowners have a damn good claim to protecting their shit with force, yet it's much easier to find and prosecture those folks afterwards.

It's why even if someone clearly hops into your house to liberate you from your worldly possessions and you help them reach a higher plane of existence, you're still going to probably catch some serious flak for it.

I would also guess that some of the property owners are worried about actually using their weapons, as this might get them some return fire from newly emboldened messengers of peaceful protest - depending on where they are, again.

It's rëtardedly optimistic, but at the end of this I do hope for the beginnings of police reform - the discipline and removal of bad cops, protecting the ones that speak up against corruption, and overall superior training. I want them to go the route of being so good, that these animals can't complain about being oppressed anymore and are exposed for what they really are. Shit training, stupid quotas and weak leadership that fails to discipline unwanted behavior is like 90% of the problem.

There's always going to be dindus that give them a hard time, and always a psycho that slips through the cracks, but maybe encouraging being above the average citizen and upholding those values will help weed out the corrupt.

Dude, that's what has been implemented for the better part of the last decade. It's become blindingly clear to pretty much everyone that incremental changes to the existing law enforcement and judicial structure isn't the goal. They didn't even wait until the body was cold before torching shit and the excuse was "well if you had just implemented socialism this wouldn't be happening" or "abolish police so we can implement our own laws and government".
