💩 answer: It's only a matter of time.

More serious answer: The City of Detroit is a weird mix. The east side is now largely urban prairies where there might be streets with only one house standing on it -- many of which are inhabited by someone who has no options for relocation. On the west side, there's small patches of decent neighborhoods with active neighborhood associations and security patrols. Everywhere else is generally a mess, to be succinct. A thriving neighborhood that a classmate grew up in is now nothing but vacant lots, vacant houses, and burnt out buildings. Even a mega-chruch a pastor started construction on in hopes of revitalizing that particular neighborhood still looks unfinished years later based on a current aerial map of the area. Similarly, neighborhoods that were once decent in the past have changed to the point they are now places one would want to avoid at all costs if possible. The worst and unfortunate part of all this is how the neighborhoods within Detroit eventually deteriorate once schools and churches in the area close.

Kent State did not stop Nixon winning 2 years later plus there was a lot of counterculture pushback like a large scale counter riot by some hardhats in New York. And there was no Timothy McVeigh type response either despite gun and bomb regulations more lax in that era I guess compared to the 1990s.
