What is funny is something like 60% of the country in recent polls wants the fucking ARMY on the streets NOW. And that poll didn't capture the number of people who detest what is going on but do not want the infantry on the streets. At best all of these corporations and political leaders are pandering to about 20% of the population. Twitter and Reddit have completed disassociated these people from the rest of the country.

While they are all cheering on twitter, gun sales in America are through the fucking roof, with almost a million first time gun buys in May. I expect June to be even more wild. Its very clear where the country is, and its not with Ali Velshi assuring us everything is fine while he stands in front of a burning liquor store.

I think another part of it is this REALLY hurts him - Donald ACTUALLY loves America AND Americans, and he's deeply hurt seeing them in pain.

It's his defining difference as a person and a politician; he actually loves the country, 1950s boomer-style.

The thing that flipped him is similar to what happens to others. People flocked to him as their protector and he found it endearing, and has assumed that role unironically. It's why he used the "silent majority" line so much.

It's interesting that in the Detroit riots in 67 sort of the opposite was true. The Guard was mostly scared rednecks, whereas the regular Army units that came in were more experienced - and specifically many had seen combat in Vietnam already. The regulars were far less 'shoot at everything that moves' and got better results.

You can't really extrapolate, though - the Guard of the 60s was very, very little like that of today, much more of an integrated force.
