A couple of reasons I can think of are autogynephilia combined with video game and anime waifus and most of them using anime and video games as a form of escapism.

They hate their lives, so they become obsessed with the idea that they would be happier if they were anime lolis.

Now, so many neckbeards have transitioned that they now actively try to groom and recruit others in their fan communities, which increases the number of weeb AGPs even more. It's a cycle, almost like multi-level-marketing. One guy troons out because of hentai, so he starts grooming his friends with shit he read in a Reddit echo chamber. Then the friends transition, and those people try to groom their friends. TRA rhetoric creates an incentive for them to covert others by demonizing "cis" people and encouraging troons to cut off their "ignorant" friends and family.

i never understood this
like, i used to play mmos and i played plenty of female characters, but i never got any of that 'girl attention' these people talk about, and neither did any of my buddies who were doing the same thing. 'girl attention' only ever became a thing when someone actually said that she's a girl IRL.
