We still have something like 10k troops in Afghanistan and assorted troops scattered all over the Middle East to aid in fighting some terrorist groups in the region, partially to avoid Iran tipping the political balance in all surrounding regions bit like how the now dead Salami was playing around with his terrorist/militia groups.

Mattis seemed more annoyed by the concept of having to set an actual goal with our military presences rather than be a permanent feature in all these countries. Which turned out to be a problem from the start with Mattis as evidenced by the early meeting at the Pentagon with Tillerson, Mattis, and others who wanted to teach Trump why it's a great idea to have all these permanent bases in these countries that hate us.

He heard an adviser say a word or phrase and then seized on that to interject with his take. For instance, the word “base” prompted him to launch in to say how “crazy” and “stupid” it was to pay for bases in some countries.

Trump’s first complaint was to repeat what he had vented about to his national security adviser months earlier: South Korea should pay for a $10 billion missile defense system that the United States built for it. The system was designed to shoot down any short- and medium-range ballistic missiles from North Korea to protect South Korea and American troops stationed there. But Trump argued that the South Koreans should pay for it, proposing that the administration pull U.S. troops out of the region or bill the South Koreans for their protection.

You had Mattis feeling he was trying to lecture the president of how it's simply a fact that we have to spend a fortune on these other countries and not ask for anything in return.

“They’re in arrears,” Trump said, reverting to the language of real estate. He lifted both his arms at his sides in frustration. Then he scolded top officials for the untold millions of dollars he believed they had let slip through their fingers by allowing allies to avoid their obligations.
“We are owed money you haven’t been collecting!” Trump told them. “You would totally go bankrupt if you had to run your own business.”

Mattis wasn’t trying to convince the president of anything, only to explain and provide facts. Now things were devolving quickly. The general tried to calmly explain to the president that he was not quite right. The NATO allies didn’t owe the United States back rent, he said.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but there is one thing I'd like to point out here: the powers that modern liberal politics and ideology currently cling to are starting to decline on some measure or are facing unprecedented backlash from existing establishments. It's kind of an inverse effect of the Bush administration, if you will.

The devastating loss the Democrats in 2016 combined with the radicalisation the party has faced since then along with the complete failure of the Blue Wave revealed something very telling about the Democrats as a whole. They focus far too much on urban populism to the point where they alienate suburban and rural voters from their policies. This is also compounded by the fact that they act in such a self-assured manner to the point where they can't fucking see the writing on the walls.

"New media" outlets like Salon/Vox, Vice, and Buzzfeed and even traditional news outlets like CNN, MSNBC, and the New York Times have seen unprecedented layoffs in their overall staff because of the fact that people are catching onto the fact that the content that they put out on a daily basis is basically rubbish that doesn't actually engage the user outside of shitty clickbait. In the case of the latter, trust in traditional news outlets has been declining steadily over time.

Social media giants like Facebook and Twitter are facing increasing amounts of scrutiny for the way that they tailor their news feeds to generate the most amount of engagement possible at the expense of inadvertently (or intentionally, depending on whether or not you want to trace this phenomena back to Obama winning 2012) influencing elections. If you want to bring up the subject of fact checking on social media, the amount of scrutiny these companies face becomes much bigger.

This ties in with my previous point, but it still bears mentioning on its own. The prevalence of Big Data alongside the aforementioned scrutiny that companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and so on have been facing has led to apps like AdBlock/uBlock and Brave to actually have a niche. The Mozilla Foundation also rebranded Firefox to have a more privacy-centric development model which seems to have managed to recover a small portion of their previous user base that migrated over to Chrome in years past. This might not seem like a big deal, but Big Data is all about generating ad revenue and engagement no matter the cost. Such measures to protect, anonymise, or outright falsify the data is anathema to these corporate interests and takes away some measure of power from these entities who directly profit off of these lunatic left-wing narratives since they're the ones who buy into it the most. Again, I might be optimistic in my assessment of this, but such products (outside of AdBlock/DuckDuckGo) wouldn't have had a niche outside of minor convenience at best a good 8-10 years ago.

There definitely is a discussion to be had about whether or not the newer generation will be able to adapt to a life without all of this left-wing lunacy enabled by instant dopamine fixes caused by social media, but the cracks in the very institutions that the left have been shown and are steadily increasing over time.

Well considering how Ted Cruz's demeanour has changed since 2016, I'd wager that he's actually fairly likeable. Especially considering how he's actually been rightfully calling out the bullshit of Obama, Biden, and everyone else involved with the Horowitz fiasco. That's actually a LOT more likeable than AOC and Ilhan Omar have been as of late, that's for sure.

Plus, Rand Paul has generally been one of the more sensible GOP senators. I don't necessarily agree with him on every single point and he has done shit I don't care for but broadly speaking, he's basically on the same level as Cruz at this point in time,

Dan was a federal officer/agent (can't remember) for a few years then became Secret Service and served in both the Bush and Obama administrations. He's also hosted Trump on the show twice in the last 6 months. He's very likely the most well connected conservative pundit with a daily show that really knows the inner workings of federal law enforcement.
