Don't be eager for more action here. The mask is off, let people stare at the beast underneath.
Kiwis ITT have been going off about incrementalism on the left, their slowly taking over institutions and shifting the Overton window, etc. This could be incrementalism in the other direction, as the normal people realize that social justice means a boot on their own neck. You don't need a harsh counter-reaction to drive the point home.
Take a lesson from Trump, who I frequently disagree with, but who played this masterfully so far. He could have played the traditional Republican law & order stern father role, ordered soldiers into the streets, and stomped people who were protesting a legitimate grievance (bad policing) in a destructive way (riots and looting). If he did, he wouldn't be playing to his base--he would have lost the conservatives who are big on Posse Comitatus protections. There were laws he could activate about insurrections, but that would be a morally and legally gray area.
Instead, he talked tough, laid the blame on the mayors/governors, told the army to prepare just in case... but stopped short of action. Then he made a show of strength that was clearly under his legal purview: having the NG clear the street down to St John's church, where he promised more of the same and waved a Bible around (ugh... not a great photo op, but he got the point across). Then he beefed up security only in DC, after multiple beloved monuments were defaced.
Now no one can say he overstepped his boundaries, and no one can say he ignored the issue. The worst they can say is he gassed some protesters nobody cared about because they lit the church on fire the previous night. And if you've been watching the live feeds since the start, you'll notice that the day Trump walked to St John's was the same day the riots turned into mostly orderly protests.
I don't know how this will ultimately play into the election, there's 5 months of spin and narrative to go. But no one can call Trump a fascist who deployed troops to US soil (outside of DC, where he's allowed to). It wouldn't be worth breaking that Constitutional barrier just to save a couple of Democratic strongholds, even if you think they richly deserve it.
As a bonus, Trump seems to have broken the grip Antifa had on the left with a mere 2 tweets. The FBI didn't even get involved yet, but they're being hunted by Mexican gangs and angry black protesters. They aren't gone, but it's a step in the right direction.
Completely agree. I might have been a bit too hyperbolic in callign for more.
