The grapevine rumor mill suggests that some folks intended to "defund the police" are looking to Camden NJ as a model of this.

Now, I'm not terribly familiar with the case of Camden, but from a glance - it shows a big spike in crime around 2011, which then gets almost cleaved in half around 2013. That's when they apparently booted out the police department - and then replaced them with one that's nearly twice as large, just structured differently. Camden still has crime rates way way above the norm for the country, but that does seem to show a marked improvement.

...But if this is the goal, unless there's something my cursory look at a rumor is missing, why not make that more clear? Why use language that suggests scorched-earth tactics, which reflexively make the silent majority more willing to support the police and authority more generally? I get that making people more racist serves these 'revolutionary' goals, but how does making people more sympathetic to the current system assist that?

If you have ever spent as long as a minute in Camden you know how absolutely fucking insane this concept is. It's like looking to Mogadishu as a model. How the fuck does anyone get this stupid?

By the statistics, it does look like the "defund the police" effort had a positive effect when it meant "double the size of the police force." Might still be shit, but there is numbers to support the claim that if you don't underfund and understaff a PD, it gets better results and has better community relations.

I just don't understand why this idea is being sold as 'defund'.

Well taking into account the time when Montreal did it, the consequences are going to be felt within less than a few hours.
As for reversing the decision, that would mean admitting they were wrong, as well as the fact that officers are quitting in droves so even IF they reverse the decision then idk who will be the new police.

I understand the plan for the Texas funeral was for Biden, Bush II and Obama to be in attendance and give speeches as a show of national unity against the orange man. That's now not happening. Their internal polling must be pretty fucking terrible if they're pulling back this hard.

News articles I've read said it's almost certainly posturing. A public vote is going to need to be held to actually change the charter and completely remove the police.
