This is precisely the issue. Teachers do not teach any more. They use their position to push their own personal beliefs and agendas. They fill their students heads with their own beliefs, and no school is exempt from this issue. Part of the problem is teaching, as a profession means teachers often go from school to Uni/college and then into work. They have very little experience oflife outside of academia, too many of them are from middle class backgrounds, and now they're in their nice little positions, they want to make sure everyone thinks/believes/feels as they do


They are also of the generation that has been told repeatedly, from birth that dissent against their beliefs is unconscionable, and they have no clue at all how to understand anyone who has a differing opinion. And to make matters worse, they have shown repeatedly that they will use any and all methods to shut up anyone who disagrees with them, be it doxing, smear campaigns, inciting violence and worse to achieve this


Plenty of people disagree with them, but they are simply too scared and cowed - and rightly so, let's be realistic - to stick their heads above the parapets to demand that his batshittery stops

This is an old post, but this historian's appeal to authority argument that they "never use statues to teach history" is just stupid. A lot can be learned from statues, not only around who or what is the focus, but also what that statue says about the message wanting to be conveyed by those that constructed it. Statues are a way of showcasing the collective memory of the time they are built and what they found most important to emphasis at the time, meaning that they evolve over time as this shifts. This means that they can be used by today's historians to understand how people of the past viewed or celebrated their own history and how it developed through a nations history. Books are fine to learn with, but learning about statues (their importance in showing collective memory and why they change over time) is a very important lesson for budding historians in how malleable history is.

It's a very good starter in talking about how even the more "efficient tools" of history books are also subjected to presenting ones history very different depending on what time period they're from and what public memory is the current focus. Books are subject to the bias of the writers or those that commissioned their writings and if you take one from say the 50s then one from today and stuck them side by side you'd see very clear different interpretations on the same historical events. Hell, you can even have an interesting discussion around why statues get taken down by their own community or by outside forces because it tells you some history as to what is causing that desire for removal. An outside force might destroy a statue that emphasizes a local populations proud heritage as a means of demoralizing them or forcing assimilation while a community might tear down a statue built by an outside force (i.e. Commie statues being torn down after the fall of USSR or when a country gained their own independence).

Anyone with even cursory knowledge about the evolution of the Historiography field knows how much of a headache the ever changing interpretations of history are and the battlefields those "efficient tools" can be for author bias. You have figures like Eugene Genovese that was known for bringing a Marxist perspective to the study of history only in his later years to shift to traditional conservatism where he openly criticized the state of academic freedom under attack by the left he used to belong to.

Slight PL: Took mandatory history course that dealt with the history of historiography and its evolution over time. Also took a course where the professor extensively made use of statues in teaching how the history of a nation can evolve and change over time as the collective memory shifts. I have no idea what the historian in that tweet teaches, but I can only guess that their class is probably one of those very boring and poorly engaging courses where you just read shit from the textbooks given. It upsets me greatly that they're speaking for other historians when it's just their own opinion.

Anecdotal as it may be, I can tell you from personal experience that shit like this is spread far and wide, and can go far beyond the borders of America, particularly the part about college professors and other individuals working in education. Not only stupid, it's evil. Iconoclasts are one of the few groups with the ability to genuinely get me irrationally angry, because they never stop at just the "bad" statues and they never stop at just the statues, either. Statuary is history, in solidified form, for good or ill.

Knocking down statues is a wedge to start re-writing history, but also as you say, a way to crush the spirit and identity of the people. It's no different to the taliban destroying those giant buddhas, or cromwell's destruction of the lady chapel at Ely Cathedral (or even the historically and culturally offensive "replacement" statue of Mary that Labour shoved in there during its recent renovations).
