One thing to bear in mind with the lack of opposition is that one has to consider what the benefit of opposing is.
I think this is the crux of why a silent majority comes about. What is the benefit of putting your neck out there and declaring that the emperor is naked? Well, you'll get shit on, maybe you'll get some 'I agree with you but I'll never say that' from people lacking in gusto, but that's really all the more. You'd be risking your employment and your livelihood in defense of truth - which doesn't much pay the bills.
The risk, of course, is that people capitulate and stay quiet on something that is a paper tiger at its core, and allow it to do things which are damaging in the long-term and can't be recovered from once such a thing inevitable collapses in on itself. That's the point at which one wishes there had been more pushback. 'Course, it's hard to tell when too much is too much, and when you're dealing with a rot that's been festering for decades and decades.
Methinks the best thing to do is to get yourself secure and far-removed from where it's going to go down when everything falls in. We all know there's so much debt being piled up in social programs, in colleges, in private households, in health care, so-on so-forth. Social Security and Medicare/aid and so-on were all going to run out relatively soon -before- Corona and this shit. That's all gonna crumble sooner or later.

I'm sure he's not the only one. I normally have to feign at least some kind of left leaning political views in public or in social interactions, and even if you just nod and smile during a political conversation with someone whos even slightly to the left, they'll spout some of the most horrifying and honestly racist shit I've ever heard, and no one dares to argue with them because what matters is not the argument itself, but the moral grandstand. The idea of being on "the right side of history" is more important then accepting a different viewpoint or having a genuine conversation about the topic. It stems from being absorbed into politics as a personality trait. These people are so emotionally invested in politics, that disagreeing with them is an insult to their own sense of self worth. I tried to have a genuine debate on how illegal immigration affects the US, and I was discussing it on an economic term, without insulting Mexicans or Immigrants, but how much it costs the US to fund people who don't pay taxes, and how low the standard of living it is, and they cut me off saying that they'd start getting angry and punch me.
Going forward, its important to understand that the people who defend rioting and looting are doing it, not because they believe what they are saying is true, but because its the correct thing to say

I'm not sure I entirely agree about the need for such a moment. When came that moment in the 70s that ushered in the 80s? The left destroyed itself and alienated the country and got slaughtered in 1972.
Today, it seems like this craze is more supported by the establishment on the surface, yet that seems to be quite a visage all the same. What I think will happen is that these people will turn on themselves and burn out... And the moment then comes to preserve all of this and never let these people forget how pathetic, unintelligent, and weak they are. I think it then becomes time to make these people really really loathe themselves once it becomes clear just how fucking stupid they are -- drive 'em either into doubling down as loonbags or shutting their trap essentially forever.
It's not yet the time for it, I feel - once they start to crumble in, it's time to browbeat, it's time to point to statistics and examples of how they helped to cause struggling and pain and economic despair among the people they claimed so, so hard to care about. People now are being cancelled; methinks the hope is once the pendulum begins swinging back, pour on the shame and wry sardonic venom onto this oh-so-righteous crusaders.
Quite honestly, so many of these people are insecure, batshit insane messes of made-up and self-inflicted mental illness and anxiety and depression and bluh bluh bluh. On the pendulum backswing, it's up to those folks who want to bring sanity, reason, logic, and emotion restrained for the purposes of the floushing of all people... to capitalize on these glaring cracks and insecurities and wind up these people; let them break themselves down into miserable, self-destructive wrecks. The risk of ushering in your 'revolution' on the back of self-loathing and a cult of weakness... is that it wouldn't be so hard for that foundation to rot and wobble, would it?
