And then I get further along in the article and they're playing it straight with no sarcasm or tongue in cheek at all. And then at the very end she's still alive despite "dying three times". This is all information coming from historical works in the late 1800's and early 1900's, when the war was effectively contemporary. Its almost as though the victors are attempting to edit, censor, or oversimplify history in order to make themselves look better and make their opponents look worse.

There are three things about the civil war that isn't taught. First, is that there were black slave owners. William Ellison is the most well known and infamous among the slave owners.

Second, the leaders of Africa who profited from the slave trade, begged the United States to not ban slavery. Because why would anyone voluntarily give up a profitable business.

Very small percentage of the population owned slaves. It varied from state to state, but not everyone owned slaves. And there were free African Americans who lived in the south of their own free will.

If I recall correctly one of the reasons the body camera movement died out was that it was capturing criminals being criminals and making certain communities look bad.

quick forensic explanation:

a .22 sometimes has enough power to enter the skull but not to come out, so depending on how it gets in it can "go around" the brain and create lots of damage. Slightly bigger calibers can go in and out and people can survive (see suicide attempts). Of course I don't mean anti-aircraft guns, high velocity bullets.

@NyQuilninja : "mentally incompetent" does not mean "mentally sick", those are different concepts, somebody can be mentally incompetent because they were drunk but not mentally sick as in the need to be committed to a hospital. Conversely, a "mentally sick" person (e.g. light depression or anxiety) can be fully competent to buy property, vote etc.

So it depends on the crime, how sick they are, etc. I doubt there is a blanket policy as you say, please provide the source, although I agree that prisons have plenty of mentally sick people.

The issue with this though is how you view ownership. In most families the oldest man was the head of the household, and as a result they were the property owner. Therefore, you might have a household of 7 people, with one of them being a slave. Technically, the slave only belongs to one of those people, but in reality that is a household with a slave and 6 people who have a slave at their personal disposal. In the same way a household of 4 may only have 2 cars, yet everyone has access to one.

Anyway, I remember running the maths on this a while back. If you look at the average size of a household in the American South around the time, and then take the overall population, then you look at the median number of slaves someone owned - the maths shows about 33% of households owned at least one slave. Although I believe on average a household with a slave would have 2-3. Also, even with these numbers slaves would often be loaned to others to help out with the harvest etc. So this idea that slavery in the South wasn't that big a deal is sketchy at best - and notably, West Virginia split away due in part to it's lack of Slavery.

Plus, the events of bloody Kansas in the preceding years shows that non-slave owners would be willing to fight and die to spread the institution so they might themselves own slaves.
