Another thing that ruled growing up was my mom left old encyclopedias around the house because she would skim through them when she cooked or ate or waiting for timers to go off. So me and my siblings would do the same. IMO don't be too crushed if it seems like they are getting pulled away into the nonsense - if they have solid background knowledge of how things and people work, at some point they will come back. My older brother and I did. Oldest brother was always really based and, no coincidence, he majored in ancient history and has a ridiculous internal encyclopedia of historical knowledge. Other brother and I had the bleeding heart phase and it was just that - a phase.

All of this has been making me really think about the underlying causes of crime and criminality, and the difference in black and white poverty. Sperg-y effortpost of my thoughts below.
Anyway, that's my effortpost for the day.
I've always believed that poverty (especially generational poverty) is the prime deciding factor in anti-social behavior, but it raises the question- what about poor whites? You see generation after generation of terminally impoverished white people (e.g. Applachia) never really coalesce into the sort of organized criminal activity and cultural lionization of criminals that you see in ghettos.
My best guess is that it has to do with community. If you've ever been to a poor white town, you can feel the emptiness. Very little sense of community, much higher degrees of isolation and anti-social tendencies. Poor white towns often feel abandoned even with people living in them. Trailer parks filled with the sound of buzzing televisions and little else. Cletus is alone in his shed cooking meth, he's not sitting on the stoop with Travis and Jebediah deciding which corners to sling from.
Since ethnic minorities were largely pushed into more condensed living spaces in inner cities, there seems to be a greater emphasis on participating in the neighborhood social sphere, and encouraged integration into the culture there. I feel like in white towns, if you fail you fail alone, but that in black communities people tend to be more easily dragged down by criminal friends / family members. That's not even to mention the shared sense of hopelessness. The prevailing cultural narratives of inner cities preach that there are 3 ways out of the ghetto: military enlistment, pro sports or a music career. As many black posters in this thread have pointed out, trying to go the entrepreneurial route through higher education and corporate success will earn a lot of backlash for "acting white" or being "uppity". And the black people who go this last route successfully are often eager to get out of the hood and join suburban / white society. So they're not in a position to be looked at as models by black youth, because they essentially disappear from their cultural lens.
Instead, black youth are only allowed to see black success either through the media (sports and music stars), or in those that stuck around and became "hood rich" through criminal enterprise. Someone earlier in the thread suggested a sort of "brain drain" on inner cities, and I think that's largely true. The success stories of minorities disappear, while the stories of failures, luckily-famous and criminal remain readily available. So it's a certain kind of programming that then limits the aspirations of the black youth in the inner cities, perpetuating it. They're given pipe dreams or the promise quick cash through drug-dealing, and little else.
So the right-wing narrative that African American crime rates are due to a cultural problem, they're partially right. The left-wing narrative that it's due to cyclical poverty is also partially right. Ultimately, I think improvement of these communities looks like successful black Americans choosing to stay involved with their communities and reinvesting in them, rather than cutting ties once they have the chance to. I think mentorship programs by successful African American men should be hugely important in communities that fail to offer positive male role models and healthy male bonding to its youth. Encourage higher education as a realistic way to advance financially and socially.
And successful black businessmen should invest in a few chains and cruise their beemer around the hood once in a while, might give the kids something to aspire to.
