It's almost as if deliberately encouraging black people to treat every other black as brothers backfires in a country with mass media. It might not even be possible to end the blood feud when so many millions are on either side. Robert E. Lee was a decent man. I don't care if saying that makes me a racist. I'm not a fan of the CSA, personally. Proud to be Southern, but also proud to be American which means I do not pine for the Old South or think that it will rise again. Lee's definition of a gentleman is still a great motto by which to live, though. He's kind of personal role model of mine because he had a dad who abandoned the family (a gambler and drunk) and he was intent on being the "man of the house" and restoring the honor of his family name. He always tried to be the kind of man his dad wasn't. I had to take a similar role in my family when my dad left and my mom got sick (although I'm female -- I was the oldest so it fell on me).

The fact that he wasn't enthusiastic about slavery, but instead chose to fight (after declining the offer to lead the Union forces) with his home state and that he did want the reconciliation to be complete and not have the confederacy memorialized is one of the reasons we should admire him. I don't care if they take down his statue, but I don't like him being reduced to a villain when he clearly wasn't one.

More that you memorialise someone for what their most important acts, even if they themselves regretted it later on. It isn't about picking a hero and forming a cult of personality around him, but honouring that person's actions. Just like how Trump fans may like the themes of Clint Eastwood movies even though in his present senility he's Riding with Biden.
