Probably because they're pissed off at the game enough to want to show their readers just how much they can't talk about. I'd wager they'll unredact it when whatever embargo is in place is lifted. Plus I'd wager that end note:Why even bother making a review at that point: the redactions made this incomprehensible to read.
"So the game starts with [REDACTED], and then he [REDACTED]. Then the game [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED], then you get [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED], and the game finally [REDACTED] and that's the end of The Last of Us Part II. Overall a uniquely inspiring, yet extremely [REDACTED] [REDACTED]."
is a low key "fuck you" to Druckman given the game's apparent intent to make you feel bad about the violence. When I’d hear the yelp of a dog or an enemy cry out someone’s name, I found myself wondering repeatedly if TLOU2 could be completed as a ‘pacifist’, sneaking around enemies and avoiding combat wherever possible. I wondered if this game, which so happily rope-a-doped players with ███ █████ ████ █████ █ ████████████████, was trying to go full Kojima on me.
Whether I could simply opt-out of the violence.
I never attempted it. The Last of Us Part II asks us to reflect on ourselves in relation to violence in video games and I did. What I discovered is that I love it.
