The only reason the Bloc Quebecois had a resurgence in the last election is because of the arbitrary issue of religious symbols being banned in public office. That party should be nearing death because they got everything they wanted but the government bungled their way into losing seats in Quebec because of their liberal agenda. I fully believe that if the issue of religious items wasn't pushed onto the Quebecois the liberals would have close to a majority in parliament or even a total majority.
There's this trend that I'm noticing and I'm surprised other people haven't noticed. There is a binary decision in Canadian politics; appease the west or appease Quebec. When the liberals are in power they appease Quebec and their population becomes docile and when the conservatives are in power ditto with the west. The Quebecois independence referendum came off the heels of the most fiscally conservative government in Canadian history, that being the Mulroney government. And as we're seeing with Trudeau there might be a referendum for western sovereignty when he goes.
When Alberta runs out of oil what happens? They have made a minimal effort to diversify their economy and history has already shown that the federal government might be reluctant to help Alberta when they are faced with disaster. During the great depression the east refused to bail out the west, when Alberta goes under today I believe the federal government will be reluctant to help them and if that's the case then either a far right movement takes hold in Alberta and causes a lot of inter-provincial tension or they try to secede which will most likely be successful. And if that happens then Canada is finished, the incentives to stay in are deadly compared to leaving, and that's the end of our country.
Why does it have to be this way? Our country will be plagued with this until we die. We need a solution for the trouble making Quebecois, a final solution.
