I get what you're saying and see where you're coming from. Police have protocol that they should follow.

However, from seeing that video, the cops were being incredibly patient with the guy for about 26 minutes. It should've ended with a trip to the station and a possible fine. Nothing too drastic.

But he decided to become more belligerent as it progressed, even to the point of grabbing the officer's taser and FIRING it at them as he was running. It sucks that it ended like that, but his choices ultimately led up to his demise.

It also doesn't help that this guy isn't exactly innocent with prior run ins, that child abuse one set me off. And the immediate response to the shooting was yet another business destroyed. It's to the point where I just stopped caring for the time being, especially to where an ACTUAL documented case of police brutality happened just a couple weeks ago.

How did America respond? Peaceful demonstrations being overshadowed by the abundance of rioting and civil unrest that has plagued multiple cities to the point of untold amounts of physical, social and emotional damages that will take a long time to recover. Cops expressing their mental health despair online only to be met with harsh insults and discouraging remarks. Police being defunded and disbanded thinking that will solve anything. Millions of dollars and days of awareness on multiple platforms raised in the span of two weeks.

And that's STILL wasn't enough. Nobody wants to take responsibility. Just play the victim.

Let me add something. George Floyd's death was, well IS, m.ilked for all it was worth. It wasn't about police brutality anymore. Franchised like it was merch waiting to be sold. All I saw was greed and racism cloaked under a mask of activism. It disgusts me greatly that everybody missed the point of what was happening.

He admitted to driving the car while being so drunk he didn't know where he was. He didn't "pull over to sleep it off", he insisted he just wanted some food and was asleep in the drive-thru line, which was what prompted the 911 call. The first cop on the scene had to wake him up twice just to get him to move the car out of the lane and into a parking spot.

After failing 2 sobriety tests, he admitted he had been driving drunk. That gets you arrested pretty much everywhere, even if all you do is sleep it off in a cell overnight. You don't get out of a DUI just for being polite for 26 minutes.

And yeah, he was co-operative, until he flipped instantly and started fighting the cops. They warned him multiple times even while fighting, and he still kept fighting and grabbed their weapons. Oh, but he ran away; sure, fine, except he ran away while firing back at the cops.

Morally, did he deserve death? No. Am I glad he's dead, in terms of universal justice? No. But he wasn't shot for being a calm, thoughtful drunk. He was shot for grabbing weapons and firing them. If the alcohol made him do it, that's tragedy of a kind, but the lesson is the same one mankind has known for 4000 years: you get in trouble when you get drunk.

The cops deserve reinstatement and hazard pay for this shit.

I'm not sure why so many people think arresting someone for breaking the law is an unreasonable thing for cops to do and why people think that resisting arrest is not that big of a deal. The dude passed out -- he didn't "fall asleep" he passed out drunk IN the drive thru line. That's not even a gray area for DUI. That is completely a DUI. He's lucky he didn't pass out while the car was moving and kill somebody.

Maybe cops do hassle black people more than white ones. I'm not black and I don't deal with cops (except for a speeding ticket once), so I can't speak to that. But how many times does it take for someone resisting arrest to get killed before they figure out that resisting arrest can get you killed? Just let the cop take you in. It would greatly increase the chance that you will live long enough to get your day in court. If you are unfairly arrested, go to the media. Don't risk provoking a scared guy with a gun to make the wrong call. And let's face it, right now with the way things are and the sentiment of "kill all cops" -- you can't blame cops for thinking that lethal force is the best option in a situation. They aren't robots who make decisions based on some algorithm. They are human beings who try to make the best choice in a highly stressful and dangerous situation. Sometimes they get it wrong. When they do, they should be held accountable -- especially if they are power tripping assholes like Chauvin. This cop, though, seems more like a case of panic. He didn't have 8 minutes and 46 seconds to choose the best course of action. And he shouldn't be judged as if he did.

The reason tasers rarely work isn't because they rely on pain, it's because the two prongs have to pierce the skin for them to work. Literally anything can obstruct them, such as thick clothing layers, a backpack strap, a leather coat, stupid shit like that. Dry stunning is different though, and while stupidly painful it won't actually make you spasm out like the prongs do.

I don't know if they dismiss it afterwards, but many states do. In any case, even if he could have been arrested for DUI while sleeping in his car--I don't know if the scenario you constructed fits this case--he chose the worse option. . In your scenario, he knowingly got hammered with no way to get home, then chose to drive while black-out drunk, endangering others, so he could evade responsibility for his poor judgment. That's a crime, and he deserved to be arrested for it.

But do you really think in the annals of policing, especially in small towns back in the 50s-70s, cops just didn't give the drunk a ride home or let them walk it off?

You really wanna guess what small town cops in the 50s-70s would've done to a black guy who passed out drunk in public and didn't answer questions politely or comply with orders? (Or even a white guy, for that matter.)

Why do you people ignore demographic shifts and come to the conclusion that America, who overwhelmingly voted blue in the 2018 midterms after the left lost their shit in response to the 2016 election, will somehow swing back to the right? That might have been possible if this were 1980 and the electorate was still 90% white. But this country will become a colored majority country within 15 years from now. Whites under the age of 18 became a minority years ago. Coloreds have never voted Republican. Not once in the past century.
